Title: Unit 3 SAC Help!!!!
Post by: J_Rho on February 12, 2019, 04:48:10 pm
I need help out of the 5 page document about the sac and what we need to know these are the things im struggling with and i am so stressed like i know unit 3 only counts towards 17% of ur study score but i wanna understand this pls send halp!!

The terms and processes required in relation to Practical Investigation 2.1 Observing Amoeba
are;
• the role of cholesterol in the cell membrane,
• concept of cellular engulfment and how the properties of phospholipid bilayer that aids
this process
• the role of the contractile vacuole and how it is affected by osmosis
You will also be marked on the clarity of your communication (how clearly you express your
ideas and link concepts together)
Remember – Your focus is to use what you learnt in the practical activities in order to explain
the concept: the structure of the cell membrane and the movement of substances across it
based on their size and polarity.

Terminology to understand
• ethanol,
• diffusion,
• sucrose,
• anthocyanin,

EDIT: IM NOT NECESSARILY ASKING JUST SO U CAN GIVE ME ANSWERS CAUSE IM "LAZY" I GENUINELY NEED HELP AND HAVE BEEN ANNOYING MY TEACHER AND GOOGLING AND I AM SO STUCK

Mod edit: Decapitalised title

What about this are you struggling with? Like, do you not know what the statements are referring to, or do you not know the content, or do you not know how it relates to the practical investigation?

Is your experiment about movement across the membrane? (that's what it looks like, but I just want to check so I can actually explain it properly)

Cholesterol provides stability in the plasma membrane, so in high temperatures, it provides stability to ensure the membrane does not become too fluid, and in colder temperatures it allows for space between the phospolipids to maintain unsaturation, allowing the membrane to be more fluid rather than rigid, as it would in colder conditions. I’m assuming that your practical is about how substances cross the membrane, so cholesterol plays a major role in ensuring the membrane functions properly to do its job. Out of curiosity, why is your school doing your SAC so early? I thought the SAC was generally done after the area of study, which includes stuff like RNA transcription and enzymes and what not.

I’m not saying it is, I have an economics sac on week 6, but the bio AOS1 does take some time to do and my class will do our SAC at the end of this term, so I just found it strange.

I thought the Unit 3 SAC was based on photosynthesis and cellular respiration :|

I got a SAC next week for psych, and kids in bio already had one last week.
They've been really early this year :/

Depends on the school. If you’re only doing one sac for U3 AOS1 then it’ll include stuff on photosynthesis and cellular respiration (should also include stuff on the plasma membrane though)
