Title: BIOL10005 as a breadth?
Post by: Umattty on June 16, 2019, 06:22:25 pm
So I am currently a BCOM student and quite interested in doing Optometry or Dentistry in the future. I am considering in undertaking BIOL10005 as a breadth subject next semester and I wanted to know if there is any assumed knowledge in the subject and whether I would be disadvantaged since I have no Biology background as I haven't done VCE Biology or BIOL10004 ( unfortunately BIOL10004 is only available in sem 1 :'( ) . Also how difficult is it to achieve a H1 in the subject.

Thank you!

I can't answer from personal experience, however, I can recommend that you check out the reviews for the unit from Melbourne students who took BIOL10005. The link for that is found here (check under Science (A-M), search alphabetically for BIOL10005 and there's 6 reviews for it).

Highly recommend BIOL10005, it's a much better subject than BIOL10004 and content wise you don't really need to have studied the first bio subject to do the second. There is a bit on genetics which might be helpful if you went through a bit of VCE biology, but otherwise you won't need to know any biology beforehand. As long as you keep on top of the lectures and keep up with your understanding of the content, you should be able to achieve a high mark. A majority of the marks are from pracs so make sure you prepare for them well (mostly just watching the lectures and reading through the prac notes).
