Title: Function Sketching for Methods
Post by: Skye Marsh on September 26, 2021, 12:29:20 pm
For external exams are we required to sketch the graph of a function, on a tech-free paper or only on a tech-active?
I understand that we can sketch a graph of a function given the graph of its derivative and vice versa, but will we ever be given a question that like:
Sketch f(x) =e(-x2)/2
What do you think?

Hey Skye Marsh!

As far as I know, I believe we do not have to sketch a graph based off any function. I checked the syllabus and it has no mention about generally sketching any functions. However, as you mentioned, the syllabus does state that you're required to know how to "sketch the graph of a function using first and second derivatives to locate stationary points and points of inflection". That being said, I'm sure if you are able to graph a function based on the first and second derivative, it shouldn't be too hard to graph any function they throw at you. As for the tech-free and tech-active, I wouldn't be able to give you a definitive answer for that so I would certainly suggest to learn how to do it without a calculator (I recall that a sketching question was on a tech free for my mocks so I would say to play safe and assume it would be).

Hope it helps and good luck for your external exams! :)
