Title: Carrot and Stick
Post by: The Cat In The Hat on July 24, 2020, 12:27:31 pm
In case you haven't heard of this before, this is a thread for goals, carrots and sticks. So you put your goal, then your 'carrot' (reward if you make it) and then 'stick' (consequence if you don't)
I'm not being very clear, so here's an example:
Goal: Write a paragraph of the next English essay tonight.
Carrot: Take a break.
Stick: Finish the entire essay tomorrow before going on to social media.
Obviously you can make your own goal/carrot/stick. Please, this is not just my attempts to help my own pathetic study habits. If it can help other people, please use it.
Hope this helps people.

Goal: Finish going through two pages of Texts notes tonight.
Carrot: Novel planning time for half an hour.
Stick: Finish them tomorrow before breakfast, as well as doing another three at some point tomorrow.
EDIT: Accomplished goal!

Mod edit: merged double post

Goal: Go through Russia Causes notes during double study this morning and figure out topic for essay.
Carrot: Half hour break.
Stick: Finish during other study classes and write essay immediately.
EDIT: More to do than I expected, but finished!

Goal: Finish off notes and write history essay during double study, also start planning for comparative essay Ransom/The Queen.
Carrot: Break time.
Stick: Finish history essay this afternoon before break (also suffer teacher's displeasure).
EDIT: Didn't plan for comparative essay, stuff happened and my computer was slow, didn't finish off notes, but wrote history essay finishing a few minutes before it was due :D (very bad essay, but never mind)

Goal: Write comparative essay Ransom/The Queen this afternoon/evening.
Carrot: Break time when I have time...
Stick: Finish it tomorrow during study class, no time off until finished.
EDIT: I didn't finish it. :( I did as much as I could, then stopped unable to finish it because I didn't know how to.  :-\ As I got down quite a lot of ideas (just not pulled into an essay) I'll not do it until the teacher tells me how to do it; then hopefully...!

Goal: Write Texts notes on the prologue, temptation of Jesus, Jesus in his home town, fix notes on the centurion's servant and finish notes for the message of John the Baptist to Jesus, in double study this morning.
Carrot: Self-gratulation, feeling good about myself, break tomorrow afternoon :D
Stick: Finish this afternoon, no break this afternoon (unless I assess that I work hard all class, and simply overestimated what I could do)
EDIT: I'm really pleased with how hard I worked! This year has been a battle against procrastination especially online learning, and I was working hard the whole time. It was a massive overestimation, but still, I got the prologue and the temptation of Jesus done, and about half way through Jesus in his home town, working hard all the time. Hopefully my motivation will cause me to continue this afternoon and finish this stuff! :D :D
(Can you tell I'm really happy with my accomplishment?)

 ;D :D

Goal: Finish what I planned this morning to do.
Carrot: Self-gratulation, break for the rest of the even.
Stick: Keep on going until run out of time.
EDIT: DONE! :D :D :D Now I'm almost caught up!! :) I got a lot accomplished today, too. :)

Goal: During first study period, complete homework ready for History.
Carrot: Go on to Texts at start of second period, rather than writing History essay.
Stick: Write History essay and leave Texts for now.
EDIT: I didn't understand some of it. So I left the stuff I didn't, to ask the teacher. However, I did work hard, even though - once again - I overestimated my capacity. Switching to Texts now anyway, because I tried even if it wasn't successful (I assure you this way works for me!)
So I'm pretty happy with what I accomplished.

Goal: Second study period, do sinful woman forgiven, transfiguration notes for Texts.
Carrot: Break!
Stick: Finish this afternoon BEFORE break.
EDIT: I really like overestimating what I can do, can't I. Although I could have avoided writing a program in Python to make a couple of sentences lowercase that were in full caps, while retaining capitalisation where it was necessary. I could have just typed out the sentences again. But no.
In short, I got most of the way through the sinful woman forgiven. Given that it's a long powerpoint and I had around half an hour, I'm happy. But alas, I guess I should finish it this afternoon... :(

Goal: Go through 11A, B, C and D for Methods today and know how to explain it to someone else.
Carrot: Break time.
Stick: Do it Monday but also E and F.
EDIT: Had different things I wanted to get done. Pretty much dithered between them most of the day - wasn't very productive :(. I did some on 11A but not much. Work on it on Monday. :(  :-\ :'(

Goal: Finish transfiguration, chapter 8, sinful woman forgiven notes (Texts) before 25 past 2.
Carrot: Break until half past.
Stick: Finish without break.
EDIT: Did all, just in time (I was going off a clock that was slow). :)

Goal: In double study this afternoon, get English essay all done and sent off.
Carrot: Break... then go on to Russia essay, also personal happiness...
Stick: Finish then immediately start Russia essay, no break
EDIT: Didn't finish. Wrote two out of four body paragraphs, approx. 1K words between them. However, I was working hard the entire time, and I'll try and finish it today, anyway. Very pleased with my progress even though it wasn't near as much as I hoped. If I finish it in reasonable time, I'll invoke my personal caveat to all of these: if I tried hard, just overestimated capability, I finish whatever it was but don't get the stick (if that makes sense).

Goal: Finish English essay before 5pm.
Carrot: Break until 5pm/15 min break, whichever is shorter (unless it's a minute or something) before starting Russia essay.
Stick: Finish ASAP, then no break before Russia essay.
EDIT: Finished at 4:55. :) :D ;D I finished an English essay - the day it was given out! Nearly a week before it was due! Yay!!!!
(You may have noticed I'm excited.)
((The essay was over 2,000 words. I cut out one of the body paragraphs because there was enough already.))

Goal: Write History essay during study period.
Carrot: Joy and gladness!
Stick: Finish essay, then immediately work on finding Texts scholarly opinions (awfully hard - someone help? ;)).
EDIT: Stuff happened. The essay didn't. :(

Goal: Write History essay before 5PM.
Carrot: Joy and gladness and breaktime.
Stick: Finish it and no breaktime - find another piece of work to do!!
EDIT: I wrote... half a paragraph? Motivation is running low right now. :( I'll keep working, but we'll see how much I get done.

P.S.: No one else uses this? Please do...!

Goals for today, will cross out as I complete them:
- Work on themes/quotes for ten minutes
- Watch English lecture and answer questions
- Write Texts exegesis notes for chapter 15/summary for 16-19 main points
there was a lot more to write for chapter 15 than I realised... it took quite a lot longer than I thought it would. But, details.
- Work on playing Tempest movt. 1 slowly for half an hour
- Open up David and untitled novel/series in Scrivener, also attendant documents in Word, and work through a page of feedback of David
- Work with, understand and summarise Methods 11A/B so that could teach it
- Write History source study
- Comparative English essay, timed, and hand in

Carrot: Great joy, motivation and jubilation. No, seriously. You have no idea how procrastinating I can be.

Stick: Sadness. Also, finish all these off tomorrow, before procrastination.

Having a goal for the day helped yesterday, even though I didn't accomplish everything, so I'll try again today.
Goals for today in order of priority(cross off when done):
- Write comparative English essay timed, remembering heids' advice on contention etc.
- Write History source study
- Finish notes for creation of Sovnarkom/CHEKA (History) including primary/historical quotes
- Get brother to help with integration (Methods) 11A/B
- Write a couple of plans for random comparative questions and send to heids
- Transfer all scholarly opinion to own document
- Figure out what happens until 2250 in story

Carrot: Break time this afternoon? Depends.

Stick: Sadness. :(

Goals for today:
- Finish notes for creation of Sovnarkom/CHEKA (History) including primary/historical quotes
- Get brother to help with integration (Methods) 11A/B [didn't yesterday because he was busy]
- Write a couple of plans for random comparative questions and send to heids
- Transfer all scholarly opinion to own document
- Catch up all Texts notes
- Write comparative English essay working off heids' feedback from yesterday [if she sends today]
- Figure out what happens until 2250 in story

Carrot: Break. Today I'll not take a break like yesterday, before I've done. Today, focus.

Stick: Sadness... :( also probably a good deal of stress in there too.

EDIT: Well... that didn't go so well. On the plus side, I got back a SAC result that was beyond my wildest dreams, so I'm motivated for History... which I desperately need to catch up on.

Goal for study period before lunch: Go through, making notes, the first 100 slides in Russia AOS2 PP.

Carrot: Break for half an hour to further plot out 2020 NaNoWriMo novel.

Stick: Continue on after school, no break to plot.

EDIT: I love making ridiculous goals, don't I?
