PattyOOO:
I'm about to start year 10 and I am aspiring to become a doctor. Currently I am focussing on school and hope to maintain straight a's in year 10, can anyone tell me how hard year 10 is and how their experience was, thank you.

For me, Year 10 felt like a mini version of Year 11/12. It wasn't as hard as Year 11/12 because every subject was taught in a simpler manner. Every subject only went into the basics and it never really went too in-depth. The marking of assignments and exams was also not as strict as Year 11/12. I did chemistry and biology in Year 10 and they taught me all of the necessary fundamentals of those sciences. While I didn't continue to do any sciences in Year 11/12, my friends who did said that doing them in Year 10 made it easier for them to understand the more complicated science stuff later on.

To put it simply - If you study hard and smart during Year 10, you'll find it to be easier to handle and that'll help prepare you well for the challenges of Year 11/12.

I remember Year 10 being a good taste of what Year 11/12 would be like, but not a massive step up from Year 9. I really enjoyed starting Year 11 biology and had a lot of fun with my teachers (as well as doing lots of serious work). I wanted to work in allied health so I sought out a lot of volunteer work and work experience in the disability sector because I had time to pursue that sort of thing.

I'd really encourage you to reach out and find experiences outside of school that can help you learn more about what a career as a doctor could look like. Family friends and teachers could be a good place to start but you could always send out a resume directly to hospitals.

Best of luck with the years ahead!

Thank you, my mum is a nurse and has some connections with doctors, the more I talk to her friends (that are doctors) the more I want to do it. My mum has also said that if I get straight a on my record card throughout the whole year I can get a good laptop and a few books, In year 9 I got good grades, I got a in science, math, hpe and history and geography but English is my weakness, I hope I can fix it but studying English is weird because I don't know what to study. I plan on having a consistent schedule that works with my cricket which is about 3 hours a night excluding thursdays(cricket) and maybe 4-5 on weekends, is this overkill for year 10 or will this help me keep practice for year 11 & 12? And does science become more practical? I found chemistry really easy and interesting and the same with biology! I am hoping to find an interest in physics too as I want to pair physics and specialist math in year 11 & 12.
I know I have nagged on and on but I really do appreciate the response I have gotten and found it really helpful!

Hi Patty000,

There's this book that I heard about a while ago that I think could give you a greater insight into the world of being a doctor. The author is a doctor that studied at the Monash School of Medicine.

I hope you enjoy it :)
