SELECTIVE SCHOOL TEST Q&A THREAD

What is this thread for?
If you have general questions about Selective School Tests or how to improve in certain areas, this is the place to ask!

Who can/will answer questions?
Everyone is welcome to contribute; even if you're unsure of yourself, providing different perspectives is incredibly valuable.

Please don't be dissuaded by the fact that you haven't finished Year 12, or didn't score as highly as others, or your advice contradicts something else you've seen on this thread, or whatever; none of this disqualifies you from helping others. How would you study effectively for the Maths sections?

Hi guys! I have a question regarding the selective entry test. Are there some tips to studying for numerical reasoning in terms of understanding the meaning behind the questions asked?  :)

Hi MidnightSK_07! Welcome to atarnotes!  ;D

I think the main thing is to make sure you practice a lot, the best way to ensure you understanding the meaning of the question each time is to do many questions and consciously noting what mistakes you are making to ensure you aren't repeating them. Also, numerical reasoning from memory is largely based on pattern recognition and problem solving, so maybe focusing on areas of questions you are weaker in would also help.

hope this helped! feel free to ask any more questions you have  :D

hii!
for me, i prepared for the exams by going to a tuition class that was designed to prepare u for the real exams. We pretty much did a practise exam every week, marked it, then got to ask the teacher questions about the solutions.
so I suggest doing some research and finding a tuition that does these classes near you because the tests are almost the EXACT same format as the real ones and so u know exactly what u r preparing for :)

If you can’t, then i suggest finding practise tests online (i’m pretty sure there r some on the victorian education website), marking them and looking at all the questions you got wrong.
a personal maths tutor makes a HUGE difference as well. They can be expensive, but u should really convince ur parents to get u one (if u don’t have one already).

All of my friends in my selective school had a math tutor or went to a similar tuition to mine so it definitely works.

During Tuition, I would write down all the questions I didn’t get correct (which was A LOT) on a piece of paper and then at home my tutor and I would work through them and she would keep explaining, demonstrating and set up similar questions for me to do until I got the hang of it.
^
that was just my personal methods which really helped (i got a superior on my numerical reasoning and a high average for my mathematics so it DEFINITELY helped to do these things)
sorry if all that stuff was obvious already haha
good luck tho I was stressed to death coz of the exams but somehow made it (i legit guessed half the exam but still got in so don’t worry at all)
anyways good luckk :)
u can do this

Hi, I’ve been practicing verbal reasoning questions using practice test questions online and I can’t understand the format for questions like ‘ all misd are pifs, all rifs are tiffs and some hifs are misd’

Any tips for how to solve them quickly  :D

I'm pretty sure I drew quick small venn diagrams for them, and if they were really long with like 8 different terminologies (I'm pretty sure there was this huge question in 2017) I just skipped it and came back.

Will it be useful to know standard notation for the mathematics exam?

Example: .000034 = 3.4 x 10 to the power of -5

Don't freak out, I don't know what to study, if you do practice tests base your study off of the answers you get wrong

I havent done the test yet but I think for math you should really focus on algebra, linear and simultaneous equations, geometry, trigonometry, basic quadratics and Inequalities as the test is most likely going to consist of those topics

For English theres not really much u can prepare for apart from learning how to read paragraphs quickly and have a broad vocabulary. I'm doing the test on the 19th so just take the advice with a grain of salt coz I might be wrong lol

Yeah, same kinda. I am excelling at English but struggling with math. I used to be more confident in math but that has changed. recently. I am  SOO stressed about the test in 3 weeks but I might get pushed back cause of covid. Did you do the JAC mock exam cause I also just got the results as you posted? Can't really help with advice from the tutor but yeah sorry. 😢 . Good luck tho. ;D ;D ;D

i also excel at english but math is hard, Im just really learning concepts because if you understand the question your doing better than 60% of the people there. Im guessing the test gets postponed to July 19th even if we get out of this by the date the restrictions wont allow a capacity of that size till at least july

What are my chances of getting in if these are the results for my practice test (Hendersons) and I have been studying 5 hours a day(MHS)
Maths(31/60)
Verbal(43/60)
Numerical(44/50)
Comprehension(36/50)
Writing(17/25)

I would really appreciate if someone could tell me my chances.

Welcome to the forums CurryMan22,

I can't really tell you your chances of getting in as I don't know the difficulty of the hendersons mock exams, or how you performed in relation with the other students who sat the same mock exam.

But based on my experience doing the exams last year, maths and numerical hendersons were significantly easier than the real deal. Verbal reasoning and reading comprehension were reasonably similar.

Good to see your commitment to this exam, and best of luck!  :)

I already posted this but I got compared to other students in the Hendersons and I ended up with 5 superiors, so would these be good enough considering that they said that they made some of the tests harder this year?

I think 5 superiors would be more than enough to get you in if you can perform that in the exam. I mean it is the best score you can get.

What are the test papers like in the actual exam? Are you given a separate booklet for filling in the bubbles? Are you allowed to write on the booklet that contains the questions? What kind of pencil is used?
Title: Re: Selective School Test Q&A Thread
Post by: JZou276 on June 07, 2021, 02:07:12 pm
In the test, they give you a booklet with the questions and your answer sheet. They don't give you working out paper for maths or nr, they say you can only do your working out on the back of the answer sheet. You can't write anything in the booklet. For pencils, just use HB or 2B. Use those good erasers that don't smudge the whole page.

So does this mean no annotating on the paper, no underlining, crossing out potential answers or working out on the actual booklet itself? Are our names on each individual booklet as well? Just worrying as a big part of my exam technique is things such as annotating or underlining or crossing out. How did other people manage this?

yes unfortunately you cannot write in the booklet as far as I can remember, but I lightly wrote annotations and rubbed it out in the end, but I wouldn't recommend this since it really cost me a lot of time lol. Yes I think your individual names are on the booklet too. Honestly the only tests you really need to annotate for are the mathematics and numerical reasoning tests, which is done on the back of the bubble sheet.

Although I hear that they may cancel the writing section that they did last year. As a person who can barely hold a pencil, that will definitely help me.

We had our test novemberish so because there wasn't any time to mark them they cancelled it. Since yours is in August, I don't think they'd be planning to do the same. Anyway good luck since the writing section is what toughens up the competition. Here's a tip - use pen when writing. 🤞 for u guys, hopefully there is no writing.

Why pens though? I've always used pencil since I can easily erase or cross out any mistakes I make. Do pens have a higher WPM/ergonomic build?

Nah it’s nothing like that. Apparently it’s very annoying for the markers to read pencil and pen is preferred. Pencil marks can seem extremely messy and difficult to read. It’s up to you on whether you want to use pen or pencil.

When I did the exam in 2017, I wrote mine in pencil, realised it was meant to be pen 5 minutes in, rubbed out the entire thing and rewrote it in pen. Yet I still got accepted into first round Suzanne Cory. I still remember it being quite messy due to eraser marks, but yes I believe as it was pen it showed that I listened to instructions (it specifically says to use pens on the front of the booklet)

Hi All (particularly people who did the Victorian selective exam last year),

I am doing the SHS test this year to go to Nossal High school, from year 8 to year 9. Like last year, the test has been postponed three times already and the writing has been taken out. The date has not been confirmed yet, but it is soon and I think it will go ahead now because they cant postpone it more than November and the vaccine rates are high. I was wanting to ask some questions regarding the exam:

1. What would be a good score for the exams? I know that the test is only compared with other students, but is there some passing score or a number of superiors you need to obtain in order to get in? Can you get in with only 1 or 2?

2. Is it true that the reasoning exams (numeric and verbal) are worth more than the achievement tests (maths and reading comp)?

3. What tuitions are good? I go to a less-known tuition, North shore coaching college, and James an. I feel the tests at james an are all pretty accurate except for verbal (it is quite easy), whereas north shore has easy maths/numeric tests, but the verbal/reading are reasonably accurate. I read that James An has accurate maths and numerical, and hendersons has accurate reading/verbal.

4. Is james an similar to the real exam - is it harder or easier etc? I heard that james an is easy and hendersons is harder than it, but is that true? Also, has anyone else gone to north shore coaching college before?

5. Could anybody who has done the exam before please make a short test of 5 questions for the 4 subjects that would suit how the real test is? If not, could you at least tell me how hard they are?

6. For maths, I have heard different things at different places - some say all you need to know is basic year 9 math (like pythagoras, basic trig, statistics like mean, mode, IQR etc , factorising, quadratic graphs and financial interest). Others say that you need to spend ages studying for it and only got raw scores of 35/60 or so.

7. For reading comp, both my tuitions make it quite hard, but everywhere I read that it is so easy in the test and the texts were pretty short? The test should be similar to the 2020 one because there are similar circumstances, right?

8. What is the hardest test of the lot? How is the best way to study for it? I have got some notes for maths and have some word definitions for verbal, which I ask my parents to test me on? How can you study for numerical (I heard you can't really study for it)

9. Lastly (sorry if this entire post is long-winded), since there are only 4 subjects now, if you get only 2 superiors, do you have a chance of getting in?

Could someone who got in please post their scores if you would feel comfortable to? I would really appreciate a quick response as the exam is drawing very near. Thank you! :) :D

Hey there! I'm also doing the test this year and have been digging through the internet and talking with family friends about it, so i feel like I can answer some of your questions.

1) From what I recall they just take the best number of students that they can fill in (and the 5% percent rule applies). If there are 100 spots in Nossal then they will send invitations to the best 100 people.
6) you will need to be confident in year 9 mathematics, particularly in geometry as that is a huge chunk of the questions. Since most people get stumped by the maths section people get superiors with 25/60 correct from what I've heard. Since there are more people taking the test this year, I'm guessing it'll be a little bit harder to get superiors across the board.
7) Some people are better at different subjects. I read pretty slowly when I'm stressed so I struggled in the practice test. Some people say its really hard and others say its quite easy. It really depends on you. In terms of the test itself, they might alter the test or they might make it harder to make up for the writing test.
8) Again, this comes down to you. For me the hardest one would've been the writing one (but thats gone now). The easiest one you can study for is the mathematics test just go through a year 9 maths book. You're not entirely wrong when you say that you can't study for numerical, as this requires logical thinking that you build up over time. If you're the kind of person who wakes up doing sudoku puzzles or some weird math riddle, then you'll probably be fine. Just know about patterns and quick mental arithmetic. For verbal, you'll need a decently large vocabulary, which is also built up over time. Get in the habit of reading the paper every day and pick out new words and know they meanings. For comp, this depends on how fast you read and how quickly you can absorb what is happening. It might be a bit late for studying for verbal/comp/numerical, although you can quickly get through Khan Academy courses if you study for long enough.
9) Depends on the number of students who take the test and how well they do.

Hope this helps!
Also, where did you hear that the writing test was cancelled?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, it was very helpful! BTW for your question, go onto the department of education link, here: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/going-to-school/Pages/selective-entry-high-schools.aspx. Scroll down a bit and you'll see that the writing has been removed because otherwise they can't get the results in on time.

I also agree with you, you need to be good with geometry and algebra for math. For me, the hardest test is reading comp, and I usually get scores in the late 30's or very early 40's (My top is only 45/50 or something similar). At JAC, I get good marks in writing and verbal, sometimes maths, but now the writing is anyways out of the question. What tuitions do you go to? And for maths, are you sure that it will be year 9 maths, though? Most people say it is year 9 to basic year 10 math. And which practice test were you talking about - was it the JAC one? What's your weakest/strongest point?

Hey,

I don't go to tuition, I taught myself everything so far (probably not the best move in hindsight, but too late now). You're right that most people say basic year 10 maths, although I wouldn't worry too much about it if you have a really comprehensive year 9 book and do extension questions. I personally use Khan Academy and just go through every single concept one at a time until I score perfectly and then move on (for maths that is). My strongest point is definitely Maths/numerical and I struggled with writing, so now I guess my weakest point is probably reading comp. Verbal reasoning I do quite well in, getting 35-40 most of the time on the practice sheet. The practice sheet I'm talking about is the one that the department provides: https://www.education.vic.gov.au/parents/learning/Pages/selective-entry-practice.aspx

Hi,
That's interesting that you don't go to tuition, but nice study method for khan academy. Writing was my strong point, and for JAC is used to get over 90%, but since it's gone, my strong point is now verbal, then followed by maths, numerical and reading. I usually get 30/50 at the JAC numerical, so I need to improve but for maths and reading I have started to get my scores up a bit now.

Just saying, the practice paper is no where as hard as the real test (Except Reading Comprehension).

I was just about to say that. What would be "good" scores for each of the exams? I am in a very competitive school but it looks like most people have given up already.

Hi there, I did the selective test last yr and I've seen people get in with 2 superiors because of the lack of competition at their school and people not getting in with 3 superiors.
A friend of mine got in with 3 sups and an abv avg but another didn't get in with 3 superiors and one avg.
Again it depends on what school you go to and since your school is competitive then I can only wish you good luck that you will get 3 sups or higher. I've heard of parents sending their kids to schools in regional victoria so that their child would get a seat in the SHS schools without any competiton.

I would say that a "good" score for verbal would be 57+, reading should also be around 55+, maths should be 52+ and numerical reasoning should be around 55. These might seem hard or easy, but for these tests at this time, should be achievable. Don't stress if you don't get these although it is recommended to get these or more.

YO!
I found out about jmss around mid april and decided to apply for it without having any tutors or any other educational support to prepare me for the exam, But i did manage to pass the test and get an interview. Unfortunately, I did not get in, i still want to get into Jmss.

What would be good preparation resources for both the exam components of yr 11 entrance and the interview?

I have also decided to try out for year 11 entrance for EBSS and NHS and Im not too sure where to start for preparation

Thank you! :) :D

Hey, I'm a little late but I got into MGHS with 3/4 superiors last year so I'll try to help as best as I can, its been a while tho so my facts might be off.

1. I remember my tutor saying that if you get 80% on all your 4 tests it gives you a really good chance at getting a superior but do keep in mind that its best to aim for 100% and that getting an 80% on all your tests does NOT guarantee that you'll get in. In the end it depends on how well your cohort performed. A lot of the girls were offered a spot even though they received no superiors however, they received above averages in all their tests and it was a last round offer so I'd say aiming for 3 or 4 superiors is the safest thing to do for a first round offer.
2. I don't think this is true. It is common knowledge though, that numerical and verbal are significantly harder tests for many people so its an advantage if you excel in those subjects.
6. For maths I personally just went through the whole year 9 and 10 math book by myself and had my tutor explain the concepts that I didn't understand. I was told that there would be year 10 concepts in the test but I was surprised on the day that the math test was relatively simple and had basic year 9 math skills. If you're confident with trig, linear, Pythagoras and basic quadratics along with measurement, algebra , etc, I think you'll be more than alright.
7. The reading comprehension test had texts that were short and easy to interpret. This may not have had anything to do with the Covid-19 situation but if it did then It would be safe to assume that you will probably get a similar format but it's best to prepare using longer texts just incase they make the test difficult. Keep in mind that if the test is easy it will be harder for you to score a superior since everyone else will do well in it too.
8. Numerical was the hardest for me since there wasn't a certain guide I could follow to study for it unlike maths and reading. My best advice would be to get ahold of a practice paper and write down the different question types in it and try to find worksheets online that have a similar layout.
9. I would say that there is a good change of you getting in with two superiors since many of my friends at mghs got in with 2 superiors last year but a close friend of mine from my old school was not offered a place since she got an average in one of her tests even though she received 2 superiors. So, the main thing would be to focus on getting the highest mark that you can and making sure you don't get averages.

I hope this helped a bit, if you have any more questions feel free to ask me :)

I'm think somebody8442 means percentages. But then that would mean an average of 90% on all tests and a total score of 199/220 which very high on tests. On verbal 95%, reading/numeric 90%+ and 87% on math? At north shore I do worse in reading but all the others I get those on average.

lol no I actually found the test really easy and I got in. Don't worry though, I'm sure covid has and will affect all of you guys' performance but 90%+ seems pretty good. These DET tests also aren't even close to the real test like of course it changes each year, but it will never be similar. Don't be disheartened by this- after all this is just one practice test. Keep revising till the test so that you'll be prepared to the fullest. Good luck and I hope you make it into whatever school you would like to get into.  ;)

Also, you said something about doing poor in reading. I suggest that you read more and find online comprehension tests if you do not have enough material. It was easy, but so many people would have gotten 48-49/50 (by many, I mean the amount of people who get a superior ~11%). A good friend of mine got an average even though he was decent in reading comprehension even though he prepared for it by going to two tuitions. Verbal tbh was pretty simple for me but that's only the case if you have a strong vocabulary. Maths, for me was the hardest due to the amount of working I had to do for each questions. I probably failed but I still got a superior so... study hard for maths, but if you know all of the yr 10 concepts (ik sounds hard but that's the only way), then you will do it easily. Numerical was tied with reading and verbal. Ever since I was young, I always did so many IQ tests for adults, sudokus, played chess and did so many pattern recognition things so I believe that is the sole reason why I did well in this. I actually completed 48 questions in about 22 minutes (not flexing) but I know that so many people struggle with it. While it may be too late for you to study for this, I really recommend that you still go through numerical reasoning books if you have access to any. Also, try to memorise formulas for questions like how many sides of a 10x10x10 cube are not painted (in which the answer would be (10-2)*(10-2)*(10-2) which is 512). I hope this helps and please don't worry about the DET test. It was made to show you the format of the test and how you would work through them. P.S. When is the exam?

Hi,

Thanks for the tips! I do alright in reading with an average of 40/50, but when you say that the superior people got 48-49/50 it makes it seem relatively easy. Were the passages long and were there any pomes in it last year? I study hard for verbal and usually get high scores. When you say verbal was easy because of your strong vocab, about how much of the test was based on vocab? I read that about 40% is based on word definitions. I also get quite good scores in maths at JAC and usually > 95% at north shore. In numerical I don't get great scores (usually in the mid to late 30's). The date of the exam has not been confirmed yet, but it's probably sometime in mid November or in the later parts of November. I read that these were the topics that you need to know for maths:

linear relations
parabolas
surds
index laws
quadratics
arithmetic/geometric sequences
probability, trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent)
binary
circle geometry
logarithms (optional0
set notation
polynomials
factorising
permutations
simple and compound interest

Is that all the topics or are there any more that are needed to get a superior on the test? I revised on most of those, but I still am a bit unsure on stuff like circle geo, compound interest, set notation, binary and geo sequences.

Hey there!
So reading was relatively easy and although there was like 1 poem, most of the passages were short and easy to complete. The poems aren't that hard, but if you struggle with them, read more of them and find videos or explanations that decipher them better. 40% is accurate for verbal and the remaining questions were the same types of questions as the government test. For numerical, you must improve. Many people struggle but to get a superior, getting above 40 should be your aim at JAC and North Shore. For maths, binary is not important, but set notation and compound interest are both musts to do well. Learn ASAP because it will not only assist you with this exam, but also for year 9 and beyond. Circle geometry is recommended because many people don't know how to do it. With that being said, learn the theorems and still try to get ahead, but don't worry too much as we only had like around two questions on the test.

Hey,

Thanks guys for the information. I'll try to improve on numerical and get above 40 (at north shore I already get like 48). Do you think that the reading comprehension is similar to north shore's ones. I keep getting late 30's there, like 39. The khan academy course sounds good, I'll try to do it.  Also, were the verbal questions about the same difficulty level as on the practice test and the reading ones? I read somewhere that the maths and numerical are way harder than the DET tests, but the Reading is the same and the verbal only a little bit harder.

Thats about right. If you are aiming for an 70% on maths get 80% on the DET test and so on. From what I hear you should be aiming for 70%+ across the board in the real exam. If you want more specific scores:
60%+ for maths
65%+ for numerical
75%+ for verbal
70%+ for comp
These can be higher or lower depending on your school.
Of course, you should be aiming to get the best score possible :)

If you are aiming for an 70% on maths get 80% on the DET test and so on.

What do you mean if you are aiming for a 70%? I don't think you should aim for any score other than 50 or 60 (depending on the test). After all, if you want to get in, aim for the best rather than something lower. If you work harder, you will get in. This whole board is extremely useful, however I really suggest that you guys stop thinking about random scores other than the best score possible. Also, I really think that the DET test was easy and I am not being sarcastic in any way. That being said, we all have our own opinions and so just because I got 90% and above on it does not mean that is the only score that secures a seat in a selective school. Keep aiming higher and you will achieve it. Now, you would think that the DET test is an accurate depiction of the real test, right? Why would they put something on the website other than a past paper? Well they would and they did. This is what they said about the test:

Quote
These practice tests may help students prepare for the selective entry high school examination.

It may, not it will. The test is only for understanding how the test format works, not how the test is. I urge both of you to not waste time on the DET test and I hope that both of you focus on the tests set by your tuitions, from Khan Academy, and any other resources which you obtain. Please continue with the DET test and do it once a week, but look out for improvement.

Remember that the only way to improvement is to learn and practice. Good luck.

Hi,

Just did a Hendersons mock exam. I did alright in most subjects, getting 46/60 for verbal, 44/60 for maths, 43/50 for reading comp but so bad in reading comp like 50%. For the writing I’m still waiting for the results but it doesn’t matter because the writing is out of the test anyways. Do you think those are good scores? I found the maths Henderson’s exam the same level as the JAC one, which was a bit weird to me.

43/50 for reading comp but so bad in reading comp like 50%.

I assume that by this, you mean that you did bad in reading. The other scores are all good but you have to concentrate on reading more than the other subjects. Don't stress though, because it was really easy anyway.

Hi,

The exam date has now been confirmed - it is on the 13th and 14th of September at Melbourne Showgrounds. On the actual exam day, what time does the exam start (like 9 or 10 am in the morning or is it in the afternoon)? Also, is the exam marked as a percentage on average, or on superiors, or on your overall score out of 220 (60 each for 2 tests and 50 for the other two)?

Thanks,

November? Well, it's around 12:00pm most likely and is marked based on percentages of the where you are in the cohort. By this, I mean that if you are in the top 11%, you get a superior, and if you are in the next 12%, you get an above average, etc.

Hi, I also got my marks back for the test based on Sup, AA, HA etc. I did alright, got 2 superiors (VR and NR), 1 AA (Maths) and 1 HA (Reading). I read that you cant get any averages if you want to get in and I'm doing one more hendersons practice test, so hopefully I'll be able to get a minimum of 3 sups and a HA or 2 sups and AA in the other 2.

And for some reason, Hendersons says that a superior is the top 33.3% and the AA is the top 50%, but I converted it to the 11% and next 12% etc. Has anyone else done a hendersons mock?

November? Well, it's around 12:00pm most likely and is marked based on percentages of the where you are in the cohort. By this, I mean that if you are in the top 11%, you get a superior, and if you are in the next 12%, you get an above average, etc.
My dad called the selective people, they said that there are 4 slots:
Sat. morning
Sat. afternoon
Sun. morning
Sun. afternoon

Don't know what to make of that

You can choose when you want to go? I thought it was just 2 days morning and it’s based on some order - alphabetical or randomised to select the day when you go. And also, since the exam is on 2 different days, will the papers for each day be different? Otherwise you can just ask your friends who might have gone before you (though they probably won’t tell how it was).

Ngl, I think the papers were the same cause people discussed answers after the test last year and several were the same apparently. They do it based on your current's school location from what I heard although I am not sure. I know that you definitely cannot pick when you want to go since they know most people would pick the 2nd day.

You don't get to pick which time slot you are in.

On the topic of different test papers, I remember seeing a post where a person talked about the exam after he sat it (I don't think (s)he realised that people who didn't sit the exam were likely to find it).

Not sure if they scramble the papers. That might create issues where some papers are easier/harder than others (even if its just a little bit). The general concepts of each exam remains the same year after year though.

Well, they sent out the exam info. My exam is on the 14th. Counting down the days until this is over.

It's funny how emotions change. My determination and even will to enter fluctuated a lot throughout the year. In the most recent lockdowns, I was crying with joy when they announced the extensions because I had more time to study. Now, I really just want to sit the exam and get it over with. The more the exam gets pushed back, the more confident I get while my feeling of dread grows. I was reading a thread about people who failed, and I completely understand how they are feeling. What if I fail after getting an extra 5 months to revise?

Rant over. I wish everybody the best of luck in the exam. Pi made a great post on what to revise last minute: https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=155074.0

I'm on the 13th and 11am, Royal Café - Building 5. I am also waiting for the exam to come by and finally finish - I have three more practice exams left, trying to get 90% in all of them. When do the results come now, the department of education didn't say it on their exam information pack?

it will take around a month, I remember last year it was like the second last week of school. Also big rip, because the cafe is the worse room it has a fridge that makes that stupid buzzing noises every now and then and it pissed me off during the test.

Hello Everyone,

I am also giving the test on 14 November (morning).
Does anyone have any last-minute tips? Also, will the exam paper be the same for everyone? Wouldn't people tell their friends some questions if they're giving it after them?

 :D

Hopefully they would have replaced the fridge by now or got a new one, but if not I could ask them to do something about it? I think the exams are the same on both days  :D

the working out paper is the back of the answer sheet which is a pain, also fill in every question even if they person says pencils down at the end

ty for the tip :)
I've actually been telling myself to fill in C for all answers that I am not sure of when there are only 3 minutes left so that I don't leave any questions.

Thanks  :D

What selective school are you aiming to enter? I'm wondering if any current Yr 9 and 10's in selective schools can give a run-down of the amended exam - when I did it we had two writing tasks. The multiple choice is similar in style to Edutest scholarship tests if you have done those - many questions with little time. Hopefully in your tuition you had your exam results compared to others - if you perform better than them in all subjects that's a great indicator of success on the exam.

I recommend you practice the writing tasks, it's something hard to study for (and where I struggled) - having good structure is important! The rest is styled like an "IQ" test especially for Numerical and Verbal Reasoning.

I am in year 8 trying out for year 9. My first preference is Macrob.
The test is on 13 and 14 November.
I haven't taken any tuitions, one of my friends gave me the practise tests :)
The test has changed this year. They cancelled the writing section this time because of Covid.

Hi ureba, I do hendersons tutoring too. I have read it's harder than the real exam and that reading/verbal and very accurate. When I did the their practice test, the maths and numerical are also reasonably accurate and had test similar to JAC, which is accurate for the maths exams. I got 2 superiors, 1 AA and I avg, with an average of 72%, which is alright. I am doing a hendersons practice exam again tomorrow, you should purchase a mock from them - they might have one left.

Tysm!! I wanted to know cause I have 5 full Henderson practise exams (not sure if they're the mock ones as my friend gave them to me). I am doing them this and next week cause the test is next weekend. Are you giving the test??

OH, I think they are mock exams cause they have results that were compared to other students' results as well. They tell you what score was superior in the answers. They're old exams tho. My friend didn't buy them recently.

Yes, I'm doing the test on the 13th of November, a little nervous about it, but also a little confident - 1/4 chance of me being selected from my school.

That's nice! I am doing it on the 14th lol. I think my strongest subject is Maths. I am good at English ( I get good grades at school) but I think I need more practice with reading comprehension. From my school, only 8-10 people can get in because of the 5% rule. As far as I know, I think there are only 7 people giving the test.

North shore tuition only has about 10 people and tbh I easily get full marks in their maths exams and 90% in verbal and 80% in reading comp, which is the only accurate one they have (but they start to repeat the tests now because they have no material left). I am going for Nossal HS, and now the test has no writing, but all the other components are the same (also no interviews/PD category).

Do you think they're hard like do you think they would be similar to the test? Cus many people say that practice exams are very easy compared to the actual test except for Hendersons, jac and Edu kingdom I think. Your scores are really good tho!! I am trying our for Macrob but I probably won't go. Yeha I was so happy when they cancelled the writing lol
Title: Re: Selective School Test Q&A Thread

Well, from what I heard, Hendersons is accurate for the english exams and JAC for the maths ones, and the practice tests on the department of education website are considerably easier than the real exam. I was also a bit worried about the writing, because on a website (I think it was exam success), it said even if you get all superiors but an avg in the writing, you might not get a spot. Anyways, good luck trying out for Macrob

I don't think you can because it said no digital watches. I don't think you should take the risk as I've heard that these supervisors are really strict.

I’m not exactly sure but I think it is fine to take it with you. As it’s not a smartwatch (like an apple watch) it should be no problem but it’s best to check with someone else just in case. Good luck for your exam.

Those are fine. Just don't wear it and only use it to keep track of the time.

Yeah, that'd be a good choice, my parents bought a small analogue watch which I could wear during the exam. In the james an mock test, we were only allowed to bring an analogue watch and we couldn't wear it during the tests - it had to be put on the table and the see-thru pencil case/water botle (which I just brought a zip-lock bag) on the floor.

Hey,
I’m quite new to this platform. I am currently looking to apply for SCHS and a part of the application requires you to write an piece on why you think you should be offered enrolment at the school. Does anyone have any tips on what to include?

Any helps will be much appreciated. Thanks.
