Title: Do you think that specalist 1/2 is harder or easier than 3/4?
Post by: mabajas76 on November 08, 2021, 09:23:58 am
So I am doing spec 3/4 next year, this year I am averaging 90% and was wondering what people thought about the 3/4? Anything which stands out as easy or hard? How difficult is it overall? Because I keep hearing from other kids in my year level it is horrible but they havn't actually done it so I don't know...
I am doing methods 3/4 and hoping to get into UMEP for math next year as well, so I didn't acelerate anything :(
Anyway just curious what people thought, cheers!

I personally find 3&4 Specialist Maths very similar to 1&2, just minus some of the more difficult topics (sequences and series, proofs, number theory etc). The subject really doesn't deserve its bad reputation as being incredibly hard  :'(

And UMEP Maths is literally the greatest subject ever! Highly recommend to give it a shot. I'll write a full guide on why every single mathematically inclined student should select UMEP Maths as soon as I'm done with exams, but it is genuinely less than 10% of specialist maths workload and 5% of methods. (However, if you're doing Methods as well in Y12, 3 maths subjects might be a too much, but if you're passionate / enjoy maths it should be the right choice)

Hi, thanks for your reply! Yeah I am kinda worried about about doing just maths, physics and eng lan in year 12 but we will see. Out of curiosity how much overlap are you experiencing between spec, methods (i know u did it last year) and UMEP? Do you think that lightens the work load or makes things easier as you get more practice and are shown new techniques to solving problems? So like instead of 3 subjects it is more like 2.5 subjects.
Also why is UMEP low workload? Is it easy content, or the content is hard but its basic question styles, or is there just not a lot on content to go over?
