Hey guys, this is the first poll I've created on AN and I would really appreciate your opinion. I've always been stubborn in maths and making silly mistakes.

It really depends on what you like. You should be choosing subjects that you enjoy doing because when you enjoy them you are motivated to study and extend yourself. If you're just doing methods because you feel like you should and are disliking it, then maybe you should drop it, given that you do enjoy philosophy.
However it is important to leave options open, so while it is not a prerequisite for the course you have in mind, you may change your mind and may then need maths. If you are not completely certain that you will be going through with the course you currently have in mind, then it may be wise to stick with methods.
(I am assuming here that you are a year 11. Is this correct??)

Yep, I'm doing 3/4 LOTE this year as well.

Re: Methods/Philo/VET Music, I largely agree with Erutepa's post. What do you see to be the pros and cons of each subject atm? That might be a good starting point to narrow down which one will be best for you. :)

Well, I thought about doing Philo and Cert 3 in Mus Industry but I'm currently in a situation where my VET Coordinator is stating that Cert 3 requires you to do Units 1 and 2 first before doing Units 3 and 4. So I may end up just doing Philo. Unless I can negotiate my way through into doing it.

Update #1
Hi everyone,
So my decision of dropping Methods so far is going well. I have this librarian at my school who adores me (i.e. keeps praising me) and when I told him I was thinking of dropping Methods for Philosophy he took me under his wing. Even though my school doesn't offer Philosophy he has helped a student in the past studying the subject to achieve a high score? Well, either way, I'm so blessed. He literally gave me a lecture yesterday in the library and explained what I needed to focus on when reading 'Philosophy 101: From Plato and Socrates to Ethics and Metaphysics, an Essential Primer on the History of Thought.'

He also told me to come back in a month for another "discussion". He was about to talk about charges for his mentoring but he literally just axed his idea. Stopped and went straight to nurturing my interest in Philo. Great stuff!

Teachers really can - and often do - make a huge impact.

Treasure this absolute gem of a teacher! Some teachers can really be so amazing, going above and beyond to help out and care for their students. Sounds like this will be a fantastic experience! Keep us updated, I for one am very keen to hear about how it all goes! Super inspiring!

Update #2 What a life

Hey guys,

So today my Eng Lang SAC got postponed to tomorrow. However, this is 100% shit, considering I now have 4 test periods :( within the next 43 ish hours (Eng Lang SAC and R&S SAC split into two parts in two days).

So anyway, my savior Mr. Librarian sees me no look no scope typing up content from the book on the two sub-topics I missed out on for Unit 1 Philosophy (Metaphysics and Epistemology SO FUN). His reaction was like "Nathan!! That is so impressive etc." Then the lecture begins again and I ask him how argument analysis works and he gave me advice for techniques of reasoning e.g. fallacious arguments.

After that, I went to see my Senior School Coordinator regarding subject changes and well she wasn't there. Had to get a meeting arranged for Friday lunchtime (yay 1 period to go before my two SACs, RIP my hands).

Alright, that's all I've got today and I'll now study for my SACs tomorrow:-\

星期五见!

Well less than 5 minutes ago he just said he isn't my teacher or mentor so... Either way I have someone to support my experience.

What a find!! Just wanted to pop in and wish you all the best for your two sacs tomorrow. Two sacs in one day is not fun but you got this! You can do it! Let me know how it goes :)

Update #3

G'day everyone,

So I just did my two SACs and have a mixed opinion on how they went. Well anyway, I feel a 'tiny bit' burned out and my Senior School Coordinator wasn't even at school today :P so I had to get my meeting postponed to Monday lunchtime (3 minutes into my free fudgecakes). I still haven't made the relevant phone call to discuss if I can possibly get an exemption for 1/2 Cert 3 in Mus Industry and just do the 3/4 (get some aggregate added to me ATAR). My 'ultimate reality' is smacking me in the face and it is a good sign.

Thanks for the 10 members who voted on my poll. I guess my monotheistic self has decided to set path on doing Philosophy for the next 17 months.

Update #4

Just did a Chinese Oral SAC a few hours ago. Went pretty well and definitely passed (please be a 15/20). Anyways I still have 4 exams to prepare for and two days off next week (yay-ish). Since my VET Coordinator stated that I must do 4 units to obtain the Certificate III in Music Industry, I'm just going to focus on Philo and get a tutor for next year (approved by VAPS). Had a 15-minute meeting with my Senior School Coordinator last week and she stated that the school won't cover the $405 for Unit 2 and the cost will be added to my tuition fees :(.

That's all folks  ;)

Fast-tracking one week Update #5

This week has been bloody 'interesting'. I've got all my R&S marks back for the semester and I was so close to a 100% streak (got 87% in the exam dammit). Well, either way, I wasn't expecting to get 100% in all my SACs considering the minimal dedication. Guess what, I now have 16 free periods per cycle because I dropped out of Methods (i.e. make the most of it). Philo classes start on Monday but I'm unsure how DECV phases this out (yay can't wait to submit an assignment/task every week). I've been getting around a cold for over a week now (thanks peers and facilitators) and have been using it as an excuse for personal relaxation and procrastination. No good, considering I have a SAC next week for 3/4 LOTE. I must thoroughly question my rite of passage and move forward.

Update #5 Oh Eccentric

Just got my marks back for Unit 3 Chinese. Pretty stoked about them. I got 60% for all of my SACs and an estimated score of 30 with potential to go to 34 with effort (probs just encouragement) and at times a level above or at 25. Either way, I'm quite proud of myself since I've come a long way from being a preppie who couldn't understand 你最喜欢的颜色是什么 surrounded by people who actually speak 普通话 at home.

If anyone's interested, please reply to this update and I'll write a guide after the 20th of November on how to prepare yourself for VCE Chinese Second Language for those who don't have any Mandarin speakers at home or background and etc., including the mistakes and regrets... I made in my learning.

Oh, so cool to see another distance student on here. I may not be doing philosophy, but I wanted to know how you are finding your course so far? I know it is only one week into unit 2, but what do you think?

Loved reading about your journey. I'm considering doing a subject by distance next year and would love to hear about how you are finding it so far? Is it worth the hassle to do something you enjoy? Language scores like that when you don't have anyone to practice with at home are quite impressive. My reason for dropping Chinese (along with a change of schools) was the difficulty I had practicing.

Hi Geoo, thanks for reading my journal (it gives me the passion to continue it and inspire). I go to a religious school and do Philosophy online on DECV since it isn't offered at my day school. 'I'm loving it' so far and even though our teacher isn't available these two weeks it has been a semi-great experience. Some classmates are willing to put the effort in and others I'm not sure. I sent an introductory message to the class and added that I would be open to any Philo chats and shared a video to the class that supports Activity 2 and 3 for Week 1, hoping that it will open up the class. I hope to contribute to a friendly and comfortable atmosphere online, where everyone is willing to share resources and expertise.  (Like I always say VCE is a team sport if we work together at an efficient and consistent manner anyone can reach the top. If one classmate slacks off it will bring our whole cohort down).

I honestly could have done better for the Chinese SACs this year if I seriously worked hard and stopped worrying about my Music Theory last year and had the just do it mentality (Tip: If there's something that's bugging you just get it done). I passed the theory exam with a 74% late January this year (initially failed it 3 times) if I remember correctly but I did regret not finishing it before Term 3 2018. Keep in mind there are no regrets in life. The decisions you make good or bad will enrich you in the long run. If it is something that caused you to miss out on something in life, preach your experience to others to make sure they don't make the same move. If it is a temporary step back it will just advance you to greater things in the future.

So far Philosophy has been great in terms of the content, it amuses me so much. I personally reckon that doing a subject at Distance requires you to be self-motivated but I don't really like using the word motivated nowadays. Discipline terminates the excuse 'lack of motivation'. Cause if you're disciplined enough to commit to your goal,  'this motivation' isn't valued. 100% agree it is worth doing something you enjoy. I dropped Methods for the same reason. To try something I may enjoy. I would advise that T&T can be quite broad in terms of the way you can interpret a text sort of like Literature in a sense. That's why a T&T teacher from my school stated that doing T&T 1/2 can help develop your analytical skills for Lit 3/4.

In case if you haven't already read the study design for T&T here's a link:https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/txtraditn/TextsTraditionsSD-2017.pdf

I suggest critically reviewing all the content and see if it gives you that desire to strive for your best. If you come to love a subject, you don't see it as a hassle. You see it as a reward.

I was a night owl 3 years ago and now I'm a morning person. Hence, why I'll rather get my work done earlier. I use to feel awake at 3 am and now I feel brain-dead by 2 am.

Fun fact: VCE HHD must be wrong about youth's sleep patterns going later. Mine are going earlier...

Last Update of Year 11, The Definer

[A reflection-based journal will come, something unique. I'll share resources to 3 lucky individuals]

I've recently changed my mentality (last 3 or so hours) and reflected on myself. Be life-long learners, rule yourself. Demand more, instill life-long values. You feel richer by helping others. The problem I face is if they even take on your advice and accept your support. Although Sharma says, a problem is only a problem if you make the choice to see it as a problem. Fortify my situation to use it as a fuel to improve permanently. Put a flexible default in practice.

My goal is to instill values that all people in the 5% who are world-class in their own right have. Stop being a consumer, apply true initiative for once and make a bold move. Don't just preach but do, commit. Have personal responsibility, symbolize discipline!

Hope this inspires you to the same.

The next journal may start on Friday, 22 November 2019.

Mod edit: Edited out comment. Please see me if you have any queries. --Calebark

Lesson: Never intitiate hype on forums, not everyone can grasp your intent. If not this happens.

How do you find balancing a 3/4 lote subject along with your other 1/2 subjects?

How do you find balancing a 3/4 lote subject along with your other 1/2 subjects?

Quite comprehensive at first, noting that for 1/2 subjects you want to make your mistakes as early as possible. I faced procrastination and there have been times where I should've prioritized my time for my 3/4 although you can be concerned that you haven't put enough effort into your 1/2s. I've learned quintessential lessons from doing a LOTE subject in general and especially what I can take with me into theory-based subjects in Year 12 and pretty much anything in life.

There are three principles that are constantly being mentioned for success.

1. PRACTICE
2. ZEAL
3. DILIGENCE

This is the holy trinity of individualism and can be summarised with the word Discipline.

Twenty Tapes of Nath Final Edition November 2019 Special Episodes

14/11/19

Things on the agenda today:

Morning - Afternoon:

- Yr.11 Internal English Language Exam
- Yr. 11 Internal Religion and Society Exam

I think I did quite well, over-prepared for the Eng Lang as 90% of the suggested revision (I know, how great is it to still get revision sheets) wasn't even on the exam.

Evening: Study for HHD

Time to continue the journey. Can't wait for my 3/4 exam on the 20th (sarcasm).

Special Episode 2

- Finished HHD Exam

It went okay, didn't know the local government services info.... My maternal gran (nonna materna if that's more clear) passed away half an hour into the exam.

 “Requiescat in pace”

I will not let her down  :'(

It's time to look on to Bio and 3/4 LOTE. She wouldn't want me pondering on things either.

This has been a long, arduous Year 11 journey. I know some may have enjoyed these quality updates and trust me they're not cringe worthy. I am proud that I got a scaled 38 in Chinese according to the "2019 Scaling Report with codes".

Biggest tips for Chinese SL (targeted at those who don't speak mando at home like meself) despite the new study design for 2020 onwards:

Understand conversational patterns in putonghua, understand the tongue position; velar etc. Practice until you sound natural. Don't be shy to add some humor. Time yourself early on (like seriously, doesn't matter if you haven't achieved a level you're satisfied yet, time as you go). Watch all sorts of dramas and variety TV to gain linguistic understanding of contemporary (China) Mandarin and expose yourself to convos between two fluent native speakers. Most crucially the  broad ranges of conversational modes and jargon. Replicate that certain actor's expression + add flair and adjust to situational context.

Once you've gone through what most people call, 'learning the basics of a language'. The tips I've dropped under here, will be invaluable to your VCE Chinese preparation (credit to ryanchan799):

To score high in Chinese SL, personally I think it's not enough to just know the SL and SLA vocabulary lists. They are the most basic vocabulary that you're expected to know, but only knowing those words and nothing more won't get you very far. Apart from accurately answering the question, the only way to score high in the final exam (in the writing components) is to "wow" the examiner with accurate and sophisticated vocabulary, because everyone gets the same prompts, and your mark essentially depends on how well you have responded to the topic, not only content-wise but also in terms of language.

The best way to learn vocabulary is immerse yourself into the environment of the language - watch a lot of Chinese programs, although that would have been more beneficial if you did that while you were young, so your pronounciation is more native. Some good programs include 奇葩说 (第六季newest season), 脱口秀大会(第三季newest season) or 2019主持人大赛. Another good way of improving vocabulary is to watch 电视剧, from all different categories so you get exposure to different "types" of vocabulary.

古装 - 《庆余年》《琅琊榜》《楚乔传》《三生三世十里桃花》
现代 - 《我的前半生》《欢乐颂》
抗日/谍战 - 《伪装者》《剃刀边缘》《麻雀》《胭脂》

These are some of the dramas I've watched, all very good. Particularly the 古装 shows, they use a lot of fancy/formal/literary vocabularly.

Edit:  Some shows aren't available on youtube (most are), but you can access them through 爱奇艺,乐视TV or some other platform.
