Title: VCE SUBJECTS
Post by: elisedavo on August 06, 2014, 07:39:24 am
okay guys! I'm in that scary stage of moving into VCE and I need help choosing which subjects!
These are my definite subjects
1. Specialists maths
2. maths methods
3. Biology 3/4
4. chemistry
5. English language

and for number 6 I can't choose between Indonesian or Psychology. Psychology was my favourite subject this year but and I'm good at Indo and it gets marked up like 7!

Probably Psychology, as you said yourself that it is your favourite. While indo does scale up quite a bit, it'll be easier to study and score well for something you actually enjoy. I don't know about you but when I do subjects I like, I enjoy my class time and don't really view my time spent there as being done because I  have to, it is because I want to since I enjoy the subject. Plus doing something you enjoy can give you a 'break' from other classes that you may not enjoy, it gives you something to look forward to in your day.

I would say that you should do Indonesian if you feel that you are good at it and you do enjoy it a bit (you didn't say how you feel about it).  I say this just because I have friends that do biol/chem/psych and the similarity in the type of work you have to do - a lot of summarising technical content - can make it a real drag trying to keep up-to-date summary books.  On top of this the assessment for the three is very similar and learning all the definitions can be a problem.

On the other hand, languages are generally learnt differently - the process is a lot more gradual and I've found it to be a relief knowing that I can rely on my previous knowledge in French when I've got a lot going on in all my subjects.  Also considering that you're doing lang, a lot of the stuff you do in Indo can give you ideas for lang, and the stuff you learn in lang can make you more aware of how you use language which helps a lot in Indo.

tl;dr If I was doing biol and psych as well as chemistry this year I feel like I would be very much sick of the way these subjects work, even though I love science and do well in it.  Whereas I really like the way that French is a completely different way of learning and complements English Language.  Also you'll be able to put Indo aside for a while if you need to to deal with the Spec etc workload monster you're going to have since it's such a cumulative subject.

Do Indo!! It's a great language to learn, and we need more people doing the subject!

Also, yeah scaling is a good incentive, I guess. But Indo is thoroughly enjoyable and you will benefit a lot more from learning a new language (helps with other memory retention etc.) than rote-learning theory in a subject like Psych.
