Title: Best approach to study for commerce related subjects?
Post by: Adequace on April 12, 2015, 07:48:30 pm
Hey,

I'm taking Year 10 commerce currently and am finding it hard to study for tests. Last term we were learning about law and found it hard to prepare myself adequately and my results suffered because of that. All I do is re-read my notes and re-read my answers from answered questions. I'm starting economics this term.

Best methods to study for commerce subjects apart from re-reading notes?

Cheers

Is there a particular reason you're finding it hard to study? Is it effort based or is it due to you not enjoying the subject? Is the problem that your marks aren't up to scratch or you just cant find it in you to study?

I found last year that the key for me doing well in Commerce was rote-learning the content and then further application - Reading up about Economic news (Eg: There was a spike in the AUD 3 seconds before the RBA released its interest rates for Quarter2 this month). Basically you're going to be reinforcing your knowledge.

It's really tough to say though, like if you really are consistently reading your notes and answering questions then I think it might be hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that's holding you back.

On my test I lost a lot of my marks from definitions, I don't think my definitions are that in-depth which makes them not thorough.

Yeah basically as you would know, definitions are all down to memorisation. However, this a way to make your definitions sounds even stronger and that is through using an example. Even if your definition isn't on point, if you use a relevant example to show that you understand the word itself then you're likely to receive full marks.

Was there anything else?

Not really, although I lost one mark on a couple extended response questions. Usually the questions starting with "contrast, compare, etc". I'm not sure what I should actually start off with in these questions which result in to me wasting a lot of the lines provided for my answer.

Basically:
Compare - Bring together points of similarities
Contrast - Differentiate between the two but also explain how they are different.

Basically in these questions you should be starting off with definitions for each, that is an unwritten rule for extended response questions. But after that's where your application comes in. If your including characteristics/advantages/disadvantages in your notes then you should be doing well, and if you aren't, it should only be a matter of time before you excel at these types of questions.

Basically this goes back to practice and focus.

But this isn't something you should stress about at all if you are. You'll definitely become better as time goes and you put more practice in.

I hope I've helped in some way or another :D
