Title: What's the difference between?
Post by: /0 on August 29, 2009, 12:16:00 am
Can someone please explain the differences between:

Domain & Context & Field?

Metonymy & Synecdoche?

Repetition & Parallelism?

Overstatement & Hyperbole?

These are off the top of my head and really, they are only guesses :S
I guess this is more to get you thinking rather than giving you a clear-cut answer.
___________________________________________________

When you describe the context, you describe what's happening at that time "Cooking a fish in a kitchen being broadcasted"

When you describe the domain, you tend to be more general and just use one or two words "Cooking" or "Television Cooking"

With the field, to me it sounds more academic, so maybe the words you use to describe the field could be a topic in a textbook "

___________________________________________________

Metonymy and Synecdoche, no clue maybe one is to do with only nouns whilst the other is to do with nouns&verbs?

___________________________________________________

Repetition is more to do with words whilst parallelism is more to do with sentences

Overstatement sounds less technical, you can use it in a general conversation. And it might also be more negative than hyperbole - Situation where two people are gossiping "Man, thats such an overstatement"

You know another word that goes with these two is 'exaggeration' :P

Thanks heaps hyperblade!

Don't use these answers on any SAC or exam though, it's just educated guesses lol

Sorry, I just have the tendency to be scared when I tell people stuff I'm unsure of because if they get it wrong it's my fault :S

Nah no worries, I value any responses because at the very least they make me think more about the concept :)

Difference between metonymy and synecdoche is that synecdoche involves another noun which is physically part of the noun which it is replacing (eg. Wheels in reference to cars) whereas metonymy is a noun related to/associated with the noun it is replacing (eg. Press in reference to newspaper).  Technically speaking, the synecdoche is a specific type of metonymy.

Well, I guess they fall under the umbrella of 'metaphor' anyway.

Plus it makes for a good party trick in being able to define them.  ^_~
