Title: MUEP Biology Vs Chemistry
Post by: jamiephung on December 27, 2017, 12:48:24 am
Hey all,
So I have recently been accepted into Monash Uni Extension Program Biology but I have had thoughts in changing into Chemistry. The timetable for Chemistry seems more appropriate for myself as a student as the classes are after school. Although, I am unsure whether the content in chemistry would be more difficult then biology. Please help me out and share your thoughts.
Thanks :)

Having done both Monash's biology and chemistry courses in first year (and knowing students who did the MUEP program in both areas), I can say that if you have previously done VCE U3/4 biology, MUEP biology would be okay. If you are doing it with U3/4 Biology, then you might find it super rushed. In contrast, I think MUEP Chem after U3/4 Chem is easier than Biology, while doing MUEP Chem with U3/4 is actually pretty reasonable.

I did MUEP chem in 2016 (the same year I did vce chemistry and a year after I did vce biology) so also had a tough time choosing between extension maths/chem/bio/biomed. Since I did ok in bio (mid 40's) I was kinda leaning into biology/maths but after speaking to people who had done MUEP chem I changed my mind.  For me personally I think MUEP chem was a better fit since it wasn't too taxing and less memorisation/more application especially for semester 1 (might be just me since I'm bad at memorising stuff).

As for classes the timetable didn't really concern me since I skipped a lot of the lectures in favour of studying for vce sacs and such but the content isn't too difficult to score in (if you actually want to understand the content properly it is pretty challenging tho). Generally everyone I did MUEP chem with got 4.5 or 5's with a very very small proportion of people getting 4.0s usually they get that when it's their 7th subject so didn't even count.
