Title: [Text Response] "How does director/author..."
Post by: ASX_Billy on April 19, 2018, 09:56:25 pm
Rear Window
Topic: "How does Hitchcock present voyeurism to be both entertaining and dangerous?"

How do I approach a question like this? Or maybe more specifically, what is "how"?

Any help would be appreciated!

edit:
contention / main idea: Hitchcock is saying that, through filmic devices, moments and characters, voyeurism is certainly a means of easing boredom and can, in turn be thrilling for the onlooker despite its risks.

Does this contention answer the prompt? Is it lacking anything for the highest marks (based on this and its possibilities for separate ideas)?

Thanks!

Your answer to the 'how' is too vague - it sounds like you're tossing some vocab out more than answering a specific question. You've elaborated more on the meaning of the thematic point re voyeurism... but that's not actually the focus of the question. It's secondary. So you should only really elaborate on the entertaining and dangerous nature of voyeurism to the extent that your chosen Hitchcockian strategies are used to communicate that specific nature.

Basically, really try to answer the question as written. It comes across as not feeling comfortable with what the question is asking, so trying to avoid it. it's funny how our pen usually knows so well how we feel!

You could start planning your response along the lines of investigating voyeurism and other synonyms - what is Hitchcock actually showing you (spying?,being "a good neighbour"?), then explore the "entertaining" aspects of the voyeurism, then its "dangerous" aspects.  Breaking the essay topic down into three main points should help you to develop your ideas in response to the topic.
