Hi guys,

i am one of those battling uni-chemer's and would greatly appreciate your help with these questions. The amount of geniuses on Vn never ceases to suprise so Im sure you guys can help! these are blackboard questions haha

1. The complex [Ni(CN)4]2- is diamagnetic and the complex [NiCl4]2- is paramagnetic. What can you conclude about the molecular geometries of these complexes?

 a. [NiCl4]2- has a tetrahedral geometry while [Ni(CN)4]2- has a square planar geometry.

 b. Both complexes have tetrahedral geometries.

 c. Both complexes have square planar geometries.

 d. [NiCl4]2- has a square planar geometry while [Ni(CN)4]2- has a tetrahedral geometry.

Based on electron configuration, which of the following is most likely to be colourless?

 a. [Cr(NH3)5Cl]2+

 b. [Cu(NH3)4]2+

 c. [Ni(NH3)6]2+

 d. [Co(NH3)6]2+

 e. [Cd(NH3)4]2+

CuCl4] would be best represented by which of the energy level diagrams below?

the image is there if you go to the above link

 1. Diagram (A)

 2. Diagram (B)

 3. Diagram (C)

 4. Diagram (D)

H2O is a ??????? -field ligand so that it produces a small value of ΔO in deoxyhemoglobin. Therefore deoxyhemoglobin absorbs in the ?????, giving the compound a deep red colour. This is the reason why oxygen-depleted venous blood appears darker than oxygen-rich arterial blood.

what are the blanks?

THANKS SO MUCH

1. Crystal field theory. One is strong field ligand, one is weak field ligand. Draw the splitting diagram to work out which is which.

2. e. Cd2+ is d10. No d-d transition, thus no colour.

4. H2O is a weak field ligand. (small crystal-field splitting energy). Deoxyhemoglobin absorbs red. (It appears blue, not dark red... I think the question has a mistake in it.)
