Why do you want to disagree with the statement?

It isn't so much a question of whether 'the main cause of conflict is fear' is a true statement or not? The question need to ask yourself is: Does the novel agrees with the statement or not? If you don't know, then it is probably a sign you don't know the novel well enough.

It does mean it is the main cause. What I am trying to say is: This isn't asking you to give your opinion. It is asking you to give the novelist's opinion. There may be some room for expressing your own opinion, but the bottom line is that you can't disagree with what's in the novel because that's what you are supposed to be analysing. Your understanding of the novel should provide the impetus for your response to the topic, not the other way round. You can't just decide "I am going to disagree with the statement", you have to think about whether the book agrees with it.
