Hope there aren't any confounding variables here!

All the language staff at my school (French, Indonesian and Italian teachers) are female. I've always thought of LOTE teachers to be female. But El2102 raises a valid point - there are probably languages that are more appealing to a certain sex and I can understand why all the German teachers were men.

Hmm I'm not sure are about this. There could be a variety of cultural/environmental factors contributing to that, not just preference.

We really need a survey of whether people's teachers are mostly female/male in general to compared to this.

well mine were both, and the language would be their first so I don't think gender plays a role in this situation

I've had eight females and two males for French, Vietnamese and Chinese. There definitely seems to be more female LOTE teachers in general, although our three German teachers at school are male.

My brother had a male italian teacher once, it's almost unheard of.
