MUEP Biology

Would it be a good idea to do 4 3/4s + MUEP bio in year 12 considering I would have completed 3/4 bio in year 11?

So basically:

Year 11- Biology Unit 3/4

Year 12- Spesh, Methods, Chemistry, English/Language + MUEP Biology

Either MUEP bio or physics... but I think the latter will be more interesting and useful.

The criteria says that I have to have already completely VCE biology or be doing it alongside the extension program.

I've checked the timetable, and the lectures and pracs are either during school hours, or right after 3pm, which is not ideal. Therefore I am left with the off-campus option.

You thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

P.S. Or would it be advisable to do BOTH physics and MUEP?

First-year uni bio at Monash is very, very similar to most of units 1-4 bio, with the exception of a couple of areas of study. If you really enjoy and excel at biology (and you should, it's the best) take MUEP bio, because doing well at this could potentially be better for your ATAR than if you take physics and it ends up in your bottom two.

Essentially, play to your strengths.

4 3/4's isn't unmanageable; I had 5 in year 12, plus one compulsory non-VCE subject. I have (or had, anyway) shocking organisational skills, and I managed :)

Also, since joining AN, I can't say I've heard very good things about VCE physics *cough* pi *cough*

As far as useful goes: Also consider that taking MUEP gives you university credit, a taste of what university will be like and the opportunity to learn a bit differently/in a fresh way to what you will be in VCE. MUEP would sort of be useful even if it didn't contribute to your ATAR.
That said -- what course are you aiming for? If you want to be a doctor, perhaps Physics would be a good choice because it makes its way onto the GAMSAT (in case you go through the Biomed pathway), and you'd have to bridge Physics in Uni if you wanted to go GAMSAT route.

^solid advice, however:

If you're looking at biomed, you'll cover vce physics (and a bit more) in BMS1031 - Medical Biophysics

Basically. But I was wondering... would MUEP Chemistry be the better choice? Is there much overlap between it and VCE Chem?

http://www.monash.edu.au/extension/study-options/chemistry.html
Can anyone simplify the info for me? It's kinda confusing...

By the way, I'm planning to do Physics for Year 11, and I'll decide from there whether I'd want to do it for Year 12.

Thanks everyone :)

It's either MUEP or VCE physics, but I think I prefer the former, as it'll give me a taste of uni, it's relatively less demanding in terms of workload, and that it's possible to cram for the exam.
Correct me if I'm wrong :)

You can certainly cram for both of those :P

If midyears were still a thing, I might suggest doing VCE physics as it gives a semi-useful intro into physical reasoning. However, now that there's only one exam (and hence less opportunity to assess and examine specific concepts like at uni), it'd probably be a bit of a cram-fest (more than uni lol) and I don't know how much you'd get out of it.

MUEP biology will definitely offer you more in terms of learning and content than VCE physics; hence my suggestion is MUEP biol :D

Good luck!

What would you have to say about MUEP Chemistry?

The only thing is, I don't quite understand how the laboratory sessions work, or anything for that matter... the page is so confusing.

No idea, didn't do first-year chem.

I don't know if there's any significant difference between first-year chem (CHM1011) and MUEP chem, but CHM1011 is a pretty heavy workload (time wise, anyway). Personally, I'd say MUEP biol is easier and has a slightly lower time requirement, but that could just be because I prefer biol to chem ;)

Yeah, I guess MUEP Bio would be a better idea, as it is can be totally off-campus, whereas MUEP Chem requires you to attend the lab pracs. I believe with Bio, they send the prac materials?
