Changes to writing piece length - VCAA

"Each VCE Languages study design and examination paper includes an expected length of response for Section 3 of the written examination. This is expressed as a word range or as an approximate number of words. The expected length of response is an important guideline, given the amount of time available in the examination. Students will not be penalised if they exceed the expected length. When responses for Section 3 are assessed, the whole response is considered against the assessment criteria. While penalties are not applied for exceeding the expected word length, it is important that responses are carefully planned and address the question selected."

Haha, I think I hit 350+ words for that in the exam. Don't know if I was penalised or not - I remember being slightly worried about it. Definitely a good change.

Does this possibly belong in the main LOTE board?

Yes, I was looking for the main board at first and couldnt find where to post it on my phone because I'm challenged like that. I'll move it there now.

Bad move tbh; concision should be rewarded.

Most people only write marginally over 300, I doubt anyone will begin wasting time in the exam writing 800 word pieces because of this change. There's not a big difference in concision between a 300 and 350 word piece, and the change ensures people aren't penalised for something so minor.

There's a difference between being concise and trying to mount a proper argument in a persuasive essay using 250 words, for example. It constrained students from actually using their language skills, something that the exam is supposed to test. Just like with VCE English, if it drabbles on needlessly, points can be deducted. But there's no reason to set a hard word-limit on the exam. The downsides to that are far more significant than the difference between a 250 and 300-400 word piece.

For french they say around 300, but I don't believe they have a maximum limit.

I've been practicing 400-500 word writing pieces, and finishing them in about 35-40 minutes. I didn't even realise there was a word limit. That is silly. You want to be able to use a variety of tenses, moods and vocabulary that you just can't demonstrate in 300 words. You want about 18-20 grammatically sound sentences in the writing piece, you should not be penalized for anything other than your accuracy, fluency and form of writing.
