UMEP Biology workload... + entrance issue

hi, i was thinkking of doing 5 yr12 subjects +UMEP biology.  I was wondering if any past students(or current) could give me an idea at what the workload will be if i do this course.  will the work be the same to the stuff we do in year 12 biology?  I think I have a pretty good grasp of yr 12 biology so i may not have to study as much.  ;D
- another concern for me: in year 10, i did some year 11 subjects and failed units 1+2 of a certain subject, will these units count (as i was doing this in year 10)
- one more concern:  i have been getting A-A+ for all my yr 11 subjects except one .... (which i probably average  60% and this subject was the 'bludge' subject which i decided at the start of the year when i hadn't heard of UMEP)
besides the issue with the coursework, what would be my chances of getting in???
maybe i could ask the teacher to write a supporting letter?

EDIT: i just went on the UMEP website and you only have to send in the semester 2 yr 11 results!!!! this means i have a chance to start trying in my 'bludge' subject!!! ;D

Hi.
I can only help you with a couple of your questions. If you need advice about entrance requirements etc, I would suggest contacting the uni.

I did UMEP biology last year, while also completing 5 VCE subjects (Specialist Maths, Maths Methods, English, Chem, German). I did 3/4 bio in year 11. I would NOT recommend doing this. Although you can bludge through most of UMEP bio (and pass), it still takes up a considerable amount of time (pracs, computer tasks, lectures, TRAVEL TIME..). I found the travelling to uni and essendon extremely tiring, especially in winter (when it's dark by the time you start the class). If you want to do really well, I would suggest treating it like a VCE subject.
However, I would highly recommend doing it as a 5th subject in year 12.

What other subjects are you thinking of doing?

I asked them so many questions about the UMEP courses, you only need an A/A+ in Biology, and a B+ AVERAGE accross the rest. So if you're getting A's in all you subjects and C's in the other, you're average will still be on or above B+

Either do 5 subjects at school or do 4 subjects and UMEP. It's simply pointless to do any more than that  and you'll stress yourself out in the process.

As for entrance, obviously try to do better in your 'bludge' subject, it's handy to get the best results you can, regardless of what they say the entrance requirements are. That said, as long as the average is good, they understand if you have some outliers and that not every student is perfect at every subject.
