This is just an idea
But i find that when studying for English Language, the best way is to discuss things with fellow students
and to do a few analysis on written and spoken texts together
Sooooo... let's do that right here, right now! :)

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/englishlanguage/exams.html

Heres the link for past EL exams...
if people could just look at a few texts and write how they answer it or write how you would analyse etc
i wanna put other texts on here for people to analyze but i'm sure about copyright and stuff :S

This is an analysis of the 2007 written text section, just the first few questions
i used the examiners report, but it helped me set out what it is vcaa is actually asking for

How does the use of semantic patterning support the function of this text?
Identify the patterning and link it to the function of the text.
Function: to promote the buying of Australian produce
Semantic patterning
•   Idioms
•   Metaphors
How
•   they add variety to the text
•   catch the reader’s attention
•   they are memorable
•   ensure the audience will continue listening
•   effectively persuade them to start buying Australian goods

Identify two features from two different subsystems in this written text that are characteristic of spoken language
Testing on knowledge of spoken language
•   Contractions (morphology/lexicology)
•   Incomplete sentences (syntax)
•   Slang (semantics, lexicology)
•   Questions directed to the audience (discourse)
•   Use of ‘but’ and ‘and’ to begin sentences (syntax)

Why are these features used in this text?
Functions of spoken language
•   Can engage the attention of young audience
•   Helps to lessen the social distance
How
•   Characteristics such as contractions and slang help to create informal tone
