VCE UOM Q&A THREAD

What is this thread for?
If you have general questions about the VCE University of Melbourne Uni Extension courses or how to improve in certain areas, this is the place to ask! 👌

Who can/will answer questions?
Everyone is welcome to contribute; even if you're unsure of yourself, providing different perspectives is incredibly valuable.

Please don't be dissuaded by the fact that you haven't finished Year 12, or didn't score as highly as others, or your advice contradicts something else you've seen on this thread, or whatever; none of this disqualifies you from helping others. And if you're worried you do have some sort of misconception, put it out there and someone else can clarify and modify your understanding!

There'll be a whole bunch of other high-scoring students with their own wealths of wisdom to share with you, including TuteSmart tutors! So you may even get multiple answers from different people offering their insights - very cool.

To ask a question or make a post, you will first need an ATAR Notes account. You probably already have one, but if you don't, it takes about four seconds to sign up - and completely free!

I'm considering doing a extension in year 12. Would you advise for or against it and are there certain subjects that are better or worse?
Thanks

I can't advise for or against without knowing more about an individual since I think some will be better suited and ready for university units than others.

Yes, I believe there are subjects that are better or worse when picking uni extension. Which ones are you considering?

For reference; I did MUEP chemistry but I also did apply for UMEP maths and got accepted. I applied for both since I wasn't 100% sure at the time which one I wanted and which one was better during year 12.

I'm considering doing a bachelor of science however I'm also interested in politics and legal areas. I thought that doing a extension might help me decide for the future.
Thank you

I was wondering do we have to claim our extension study points or do we automatically receive it via VTAC?

Hello! I just applied for UMEP Planet Earth and Climate Change... Has anyone here done that subject? If so, could you tell me about your experience doing it, and tips on how to do well?

In general, what is it like to do a UMEP subject? How's does the schedule work with your timetable? What would you usually do?

Has anyone done UMEP Economics before? I can't find any reviews on it. What did you study, how was the workload, cohort size, and assessments, and general teaching schedule?

Also what is the acceptance rate of UMEP Economics, or just in general?

Hi does anyone know what subjects Uni Extension Maths at unimelb is equivalent to/gives credit for?

Does it do Calc 1 + Calc 2? or Calc 1 + Lin Alg?

I'm thinking of applying for the UMEP maths, and got a question about the prerequisite.

It asks us to
1. enrol in Both method and spesh next year
2. get A average in method1/2
3. get B+ in "General Mathsmatics (Specialist Maths Orientation)"

I just wonder that what does the third prerequisite refers to? Is it general maths or spesh or all the maths subjects?

Very much appreciate! Hope you have a nice day!

Hi F Beet :)

I think it's referring to the Units 1&2 version of specialist maths.

I think it's referring to the Units 1&2 version of specialist maths.

Thanks a lot!

My school starts to offer Spesh after mid-year, which makes me only able to finish Unit2 but not Unit 1.
I got an avrage of A+ in both general and method, and probably an B+ for Spesh Unit2.

Would you think I can meet the prerequisite in this way?

Huge Thanks again!

Most likely. Spots are not competitive in the course, if you can show you know what u r doing they will prob let u do it! Also keep in mind a B+ is like 75%, so idk what % u r getting but u may be doing better than u think. Of course I could be wrong lol that was just me who thought that B+ was like 85%

The eligibility requirements for UMEP Physics are that I have a study score of at least 37 and at least an A average in VCE Methods in year 11. I was wondering, could a study score much greater than a 37 (say a 45 raw) compensate for B+ average in Methods?

I can't say for sure, but you're pretty close to an A average, you'll probably still be considered. Also your school's B+ might be different to another school's so I'm pretty sure they make you put in your numerical averages and consider it that way. This might be something to contact the extension program coordinator about.
