Case Studies

Hello,

Due to the question in last year's involving "reference to a business you have studied this year" would it be worth developing and memorising some case studies?
If so, what is recommended: two or so big case studies with reference to everything, or a small case study from each point in the study design?
Is there any that have been premade or somewhere I can get all needed information from?

Thank you :)

Hey! Under the key skills of the VCE Business Management study design, VCAA states that you must be able to “research and analyse case studies and contemporary examples of management related to:

•   managing staff in a business;
•   managing production in a business;
•   evaluating key performance indicators and sourcing business opportunities; and
•   managing change in a business

This means that they can ask you to reference a business you have studied in relation to any of these areas, just like they did in the 2018 exam.

Here’s a couple of key things to note when finding case studies:

•   ‘contemporary’ case studies must have occurred within the last four years
•   the business must be based in Australia

Personally, I would recommend finding larger case studies that you can apply to multiple dot points of the study design. This reduces the strain of memorising heaps of content/case studies, and allows for you to gain a more comprehensive understanding of your chosen businesses. You should be able to group case studies by an area of study.

For example: for Unit 3, AOS 3 (operations management), I had an example of a servicing business and a manufacturing business that I applied to most dot points. Likewise, for Unit 4, AOS 2, I found an example of a business that had undergone a significant change; using it to talk about relevant strategies and theories that they used (or could have used). You can talk about these businesses the same way you would reference information given to you in Part 2 of the Business Management exam.

A great way to make sure that you have a relevant example for each relevant dot point of the study design (Unit 3, AOS 2 through to Unit 4, AOS 2), is to write each dot point out individually, with the case study beside them.

Good Luck!
