im a year 8 that is going to do methods and spesh. but ive got a friend in year 9 that is going to do general next year. is it possible for me to finish general this year and spend like 3 months next year on further for the sake of beating my friend. is it possible for me to get everything right in further next year march?

"Difficulty" is pretty subjective, so it's hard to say in a way, but I did Further 3&4 after doing Methods 1&2 and found it a lot easier. I also found it more in line with what I'd studied in Year 7-9 maths thematically, but I'm not really a mathsy sort of person so I'm not sure if others would have had the same experience or not.

Some general thoughts without much (or any) order:

* My personal view is that Further 3&4 is a pretty good choice if you're looking to study a Units 3&4 subject "early" (i.e. before Year 12).

* Not a big consideration, particularly given it's still a few years away for you, but if you're absolutely set on doing both Methods and Specialist, note that you can't have all three maths subjects (including Further) contribute to your "top four" when it comes to ATAR calculation. If that doesn't mean anything to you currently, I wouldn't bother looking into it unless you're super interested in that side of VCE. If that's the case, there's some more information in this thread.

* Even if you consider Further's content to be easy, it can be a competitive subject when it comes to study scores. Getting "everything right" in Further is challenging, even for the many extremely highly ranked students. Further 3&4, as a Units 3&4 subject, has been designed to be studied across a full academic year.

* Subject selection is obviously up to you, but my personal view is that it's not worth studying a subject just to beat a friend.
