Generally when analyzing a text we analyze the themes.

the analysis of language is usually reserved for language analysis but may also be appropriate in responding to the text.

however, is it ever appropriate (when?) and is it a good idea (ever better than analyzing ideas?) analyze his very writing style.

For example:

"Dicken's language the novel's first paragraph is repetitive - reflecting the monotony of the seen he describes: "square forefinger...square wall...."

Or is this an unnecessary over-extension all together where we need only explore WHAT he is saying rather than HOW he is saying it.

I feel I can barely scratch the surface of what I am saying...if anyone could also explain to me what I myself am suggesting I would much appreciate it!

tl/dr: is text response actually: idea analysis + language analysis, instead of just idea analysis

Definitely important in Hard Times given Dickens' employment of such language. Go nuts with this. I did it all the time and it worked well for me.
