Hi! I am thinking about doing Indonesian SL next year outside of school (my school doesn't offer it). Can anyone who has studied Indonesian outside of school please advise me whether it is a good idea? What is good about it and what is bad?
Thanks

melissa.

i didn't do indonesian outside of school so the only disadvantage that i'm aware of is that you wouldn't be able to practise talking in indonesian as much as you would if you did it at school everyday. the oral exam towards the end of the year is very important so it's best to get as much practice as you can. also, at school, you'd be able to ask your teacher and classmates for help if you have any issues. however, i don't think this is as much of a problem if you're studying it at vsl (as compared to if you're doing it by distance ed).
semoga keterangan ini berguna =)

I did Indo this year.
I've heard doing it via VSL is actually not too bad. :)

But yeah, I agree, a big problem would definitely be the conversation practice.
My school hired a conversation tut for lunchtimes/free periods, which was really helpful. If you won't have that, I recommend you
a) find a friend, or an Indo buddy you can frequently call/talk to in Indo
b) maybe hire a conversation tutor
c) read some Indo novels or listen to Indo news/radio.

i did my year 10 indo at VSL because no one in my previous school did it. i didnt do face-to-face learning. it was actually distant education so you rarely heard from your teacher except once a week for about 15 mins. year 12 is a completely different story to year 10 though so if you were to do this, would strongly recommend not do distant education. because as melissa said, the oral component is super important so you need to see your teacher as much as possible. contact vsl and ask if you can do face-to-face learning. they have several locations throughout the metro area so you should be good.

I did Indo VSL from year 10 to year 12. I would say the biggest disadvantage is motivation, its so easy to just forget about the subject since you dont see any teachers or other students and you can just focus on your other subjects etc. I did get a tutor in year 12 which really helped with the oral component. If your really passionate about the language i would say give it a shot.
