Salvete discipuli!
Welcome to a bright, wonderful year of Latin! For all those who need some questions on the course, exam structure etc. just go for it, you can PM me if you need some (being an ex-student as of last year).
For all those wondering about how hard it is to get 30 and above for Latin, it all actually depends on a couple of things.
1) How much you like doing Latin study.
2) How much you can remember.
3) How much you like other expert's readings.
I know that technically that is not a 'couple' of things, but it is true. And I'll explain why!
If you like doing Latin study, translation and Scansion etc, it makes the process SO much easier, so try and motivate yourself whenever you can. A good thing to do is know your grammar really well, because then translation becomes a breeze.
Remembering vocabulary is important, but the most important thing is when it comes to the Aeneid, know your story, know some background, and know some important facts about places, people, and events. For us last year the essay topic was "Father and Son relationships are the central theme of Book X of the Aeneid. Discuss this with relationship to the whole of the Aeneid". It was necessary to know some key relationships within Book X, but also to see some other's not mentioned, such as Aeneas' relationship with his father. You can never go too far with knowledge on your text.
Finally it is possible to get a perfect 20/20 for your essay without expert readings, but knowing some key themes and a couple of these facts helps your essay greatly!
Other than that, good luck, have fun! Enjoy the year! Any questions, PM me! And for those that want to know why I have any right to be here, I was a 44-raw student last year. Yes, it's definitely possible, but work must be done!
Optima fortuna!
