Latin Summer Prep Thread.

So what is everyone doing for Latin over these holidays?

I'm currently waiting for my books...

But, I think this is what I'll be doing:

- making big Latin grammar tables to post on the wall
- doing vocabulary cue cards (Latin on one side, English on the other)
- translating a bit of Aeneid
- getting to know the study design
- reading through year 11 grammar
- and more translations!

I'm planning to do the same as you; start on some Aeneid I and go through grammar again.

lol...because you bumped...

I really don't see much point in starting to translate the Aeneid now, considering you won't start it for months (well we don't anyways). I've been trying to learn the two Masterman lists of Vocab and I've done 10 unseens which were given to us for homework.

Honestly though...learning Vocab is so exhausting and I tend to forget it very quickly. But it's better than nothing...apparently there is pretty much no time to learn vocab during year 12.

Our teacher told us explicitly not to translate the Aeneid. He did say, though, it could be a good idea to read Book I of it in English.

I intend to just go over my vocab and make sure I know it all, and do the unseens given to us. Idealistically I'd go over my grammar constructions and whatnot, but in reality I know I'm too lazy for that haha.

No. Reading it in english is just to help understand the plot better (or something along those lines).

Yes, what Romperait said. This is because we have to write an essay in English on it in the exam, so a detailed understanding of the text as a whole is very useful.

I'm still confused about the whole Aeneid thing.. my copy hasn't arrived yet. But what is the Aeneid book for? Is it in English or Latin? Anything else I need to know about it?

I feel so.. stupid LOL. ;D

Well, for us the books received is a copy of The Aeneid in English, and a copy in Latin.

The English copy is for us to read so that we understand the plot etc... in order to write essays on it.

The Latin copy is for translation and study of poetic techniques etc...

On the exam, two sections from memory will be concerned with The Aeneid. In one you will be given a chunk of text (in Latin) from some part of the section of Book I we will have studied (it could be more though). You will then be asked a range of questions in English, to which you will respond in English. Questions may be comprehension based, asking about poetic techniques, and other similar questions. You will also have to scan one or two lines (I forget which).

The other section requires you to write an essay about the Aeneid in English.

Thanks for clarifying Aurelian! I get it now ;).

Just found a free copy of the Aeneid Latin version if anyone needs it:

I'm assuming this is the right copy?

I don't think they're any "right" copy considering it's in it's native text there; unlike translations which differ between themselves, the Latin will always be the same.
