Can I self learn Uni Maths if I'm not enrolled
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:33:09 pm »

I'm in Year 12 this year and I really wanted to do Uni Maths but I didn't want to drop a subject for it, also our school doesn't let us do 6 subjects. My friend is doing Uni Maths at Melbourne and I had a look at the stuff he does and I am really interested. So I was wondering if I can somehow learn Uni Maths by myself or something other way.

If you can turn up to the classes then yes, just talk to the teacher and explain you're interested etc.

If not, learning from a book is never as much fun/easy as a class but there are hundreds of websites that will teach maths online (because it's one of the easiest subjects to teach online).

Pick one you like, somebody will be along eventually to give specific recommendations. You could always consider buying a subscription to one of the textbook website, which would probably be ~$50 for the year

you can turn up to the lectures on campus if you really want as they dont check whose there.. search the handbook https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/faces/htdocs/user/search/SimpleSearch.jsp for your subject and see the timetable when the lectures are on..

Any recommendations on online resources I can learn from?

I don't think UMEP is offered on campus. Or did you mean I can just go to any lecture I want? So let's say I wanted to attend MAST30021 (620324) Complex Analysis on Wednesday 3:15pm - 4:15pm, do I just go there, sit down and listen? I'm pretty sure they'll spot me instantly as a school student because of my school uniform...but then again I could always change clothes...

Yes you can just go and sit in on lectures.. Some uni subjects actually have lectures at the uni, and you see school kids in uniforms in them, but I'd be safe and just chuck on a jumper or something so it looks like your not a school kid, wouldn't want to stand out unnecessarily .

Complex Analysis?!  That's a third year subject.  Are you sure you don't want to sit through Real Analysis or Accelerated Maths first?

EDIT:  Or maybe you've done Real Analysis and/or Accelerated Maths in which case disregard this post.

I went here: http://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/info/school-students/extension-program/resources/subject-areas and it appears that it is one of the subjects where UniMelb doesn't have lectures on campus, you have to go to other schools. Or did you mean I could go to any lecture I want at the uni, not just UMEP units?

Just giving an example. I just wanted to know if I was able to go to any lecture at the uni, even third-year subject lectures. Isn't that basically free education?

Yes, it's possible to rock up to any lecture and receive "free" education.  It's perfectly normal to have students of all ages and sizes  and from all demographics at uni.  Unless, as discussed before, if you rock up in uniform which you might receive a few stares here and there.

If you're prepared to sit down and enter swotvac mode, it's perfectly possible to learn UMEP from notes in a week.

And yes, you can attend any lecture on campus. Just find out the times they're on in the handbook and go. You can't attend UMEP tutes since they're run by schools who expect a lot of money for their service, have a small cohort (anywhere from 3 to 20 people) and various liability issues to deal with.

Yes, but you won't get recognition for it until you pay to study the subject

Mmm UMEP Maths is the equivalent of Accelerated Maths 1. And yes you can self-learn it, you can self-learn anything if you really want.
