purely out of interest, do you need to have done the 1/2 to be able to do the 3/4 (and actually do well like 40+) at the moment I have conflicting answers so I though Id ask the whole VN community in general
thanks guys

You don't have to, but it is useful, because you remember stuff from Units 1/2.

Units 3/4 focuses on some things you learnt in 1/2, but in more detail. And a lot of what you learn in Units 1/2 (namely, child language acquisition, history of English, and English as a word language) are not touched on in Units 3/4. In fact, the main focus of each outcome in 1/2 is not touched in 3/4.

Really, the only thing from 1/2, is stuff to do with the subsystems of language, which you will relearn in 3/4. But it did help me to learn them last year...

For more detail, I'd recommend looking at the study design; it's interesting.

Re: doing well? I'd say you can do well with or without 1/2.

you should take a close look at unit 1, skim through unit 2 before jumping into 3/4

unit 2 is mostly irrelevant, but some things said in there are worth knowing [in essays and discussions]
unit 1 is very basic subsystems, get familiar with that because most of unit 4 is on identifying and discussing these [and other things] :)
