Title: Standard or 2 unit
Post by: Imoru_ on May 12, 2019, 02:34:47 pm
Is standard maths in year 11 the same difficulty of level as 5.3 in year 10 or is 2 unit? Got 63% in my first 5.3 test this year  and we are choosing our subjects for next year. P.s Last year i failed my first two 5.3 maths test (35% for first test and 25% for 2nd test) and dropped to 5.2 and got 80% in my half yearly and 89% in my yearly and am now back to 5.3.

Trying to literally compare their difficulties is quite hard (it’s years 9-10 vs 11-12: they’re not on the same scale really) and it would not be possible to give you a precise answer. However the recommendation has been the following (presumably provided by NESA because every school I’ve seen seems to use it).

- Students studying 5.2 are recommended to study the Standard pathway at the stage 6 level, however if they show a strong capability they may be able to continue through with the Advanced pathway (2 unit)
- Students studying 5.3 may consider all pathways for mathematics at the stage 6 level (+ some other recommendations regarding MX1)

So potentially it’s uncommon for 5.2 students to take the advanced course, which would suggest some relationship between 5.2 and standard. But again, can’t comment precisely.

Comparing the difficulty of standard and 2 unit in general, 2 unit is much harder. I have had friends that dropped classes and went from failing 2 unit to coming 1st in standard. It is completely up to you in what you want to pursue in the HSC, if you have a passion for mathematics, then push yourself to pursue that. Hope this helps ;D

Also make sure you consider what level of maths you might need for uni. A lot of course require some level of first year maths (depends on the specific course), while others obviously maths is completely irrelevant. Doing 2u if you need to do some maths in uni may make your life a bit easier (but do whatever you will do best in to get the highest atar you can). Remember, if you start in 2u you can always drop later
