So I failed the year 9 test but I still want to get in Year 10.
My friend's older brother who goes to MHS knows some kids who got in via year 10 entry and they said that the test is way harder and they only select sporty people unless you get something like 4 superiors instead of 2.
Can you guys evaluate the truth of this and give further information? I know mentioning cadets in the interview is a very nice and easy hack, are there any more?

Okay so obviously the test is way harder since it’s at a year 10 level, but also mhs looks at co curriculars a lot at year 10 which is a big rip, i tried for mhs this year too and I got 2 superiors, 1 above average, 2 high averages. Got a Pd but failed the application portfolio, waiting for a late offer... What were ur scores?

Year 10 Entry puts emphasis on Sport/Co-Curricular and Musical Prowess. There is no "hack" I would say but just a benefit to list extra co-curricular. You definitely need at least 4 Superiors if you are wanting to gain an interview opportunity (academically) where it is grouped AFAIK and the entrance number narrowed down.
MHS has a page just for Year 10 entrance, I suggest you to have a look.
-
Almost all the Year 10 entry this year have a VERY high level of extra curricular achievement. I'm talking Victorian cricketers, soccer players, table tennis players etc.. According to my friend who does cadets, competition within MHSACU is already very high for leadership places, which is what I would assume is required for Year 10 entry based on cadets extra-curriculars. Don't want to dishearten you, but you must be prepared for the reality which the intense competition and low likelihood of Year 10 entry.
-
Thanks, guys, helped a lot. But what are the academic "expectations?" Such as how many words can be read in a minute

Have you also considered any other schools? Like nossal for example?

An EduTest and a written application. Go on the website for more details.

Are there going to be the same 5 subjects like the yr 9 test or are they different?
What subjects will I need to study?
(Maths isn't a subject, Fractions are)

There are Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Maths, Reading Comprehension, Creative Writing and Persuasive Writing. 6 components.

I’m also trying for mhs year 10, and I’m planning on learning 2 instruments (piano and violin) and get decent grades on them. And yes you do need 4 superiors.

So basically I dont have to have any extra curricular activities if i get 4-6 sups

What were your scores CHA0021. I got 2 superiors, 1 above and 2 highs. Didn't make NHS but trying for JMSS next year

Hi guys I am new to Atar notes and I didn't achieve a spot in Selective should I try out in year 10?
-
Hi guys I didn't get into suzanne or mus in year 9 entry and I wanted to apply for both schools for year 10 entry. Can somebody tell me what extra subjects are in the tests and if suzanne is significantly easier than mhs

Same tests as Year 8 into Year 9 entry, but harder of course. SCHS and MHS use the exact same test, Can't comment on whether it's easier to get into MHS or SCHS but I suggest checking out their websites and talking to people who were in the same boat as you

Alright, calm down hehe
The tests are the same as Year 9 - Math, Numerical, Verbal, either narrative or persuasive, reading comp. Use the Year 9 practise tests on the website. To be completely honest, I didn't study but others tend to use textbooks and this site (https://puzzlersworld.com/puzzles/number-puzzles/) for numerical
Honestly, something that works for someone else may not work for you - target your weaknesses and focus on what you struggle with, but don't neglet the other subjects
-
I did the select entry test way back in 2017, 2018 and last year. My advice especially for math would be to study math that is a year ahead of you and do some practice exams. Make you your knowledge in solid. For reading compression focus on speed as well as absorbing information, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE QUESTION BEFORE READING THE TEXT (best advice ever). Essay writing, focus on quality and speed, make sure your piece has minimum mistakes in it. Numerical reasoning and verbal reasoning, well there is not much that can be done to prepare for that. So just do practice exams for those ones, I heard those test are to test logic and reasoning not knowledge.

hi, anyone still here?? i did the jmss entrance exam yesterday and feel like i went alright. just wanted to know whether the maths would be considerably harder for the mhs yr 10 entry exam too. also is anyone going to talk about it as it is only a few days away??

Hey dude, I have applied for the MHS exam as well, but I am not sure how difficult it will be as I haven't done any other selective school exams. I am just a bit worried if the exam will even go ahead on Saturday. Mainly because of stage 4 lockdown, and if it is online, then it would just be really really sketchy.

It's definitely online cuz i just did the jmss entrance exam online on saturday. The online exam was alright and since it was jmss it wasn't that hard, writing was alright i didn't finish the informative but i finished the prac. There will be an essay for mhs, it should most likely be creative but there is a chance of it being persuasive. i really hope it's creative.
-
it will most likely be creative, especially considering that it is online and with persuasive you look online for statistics and
evidence.
As well as, the examiners are probably more interested in your creative/artistic side rather than your analytic side, as all the other tests are focused on that.
-
Does anyone know what contents to cover for MHS Year 10 entry?
-
Hey,
So edutest sent out the details for the test. There are four components only. Also, what would you need to score to make MHS would 2-4 be enough?
Verbal
Numerical
Reading
Maths
Hope this helps, MAN0033
-
Oh no there's no writing :'( :'( :'( :'( i was working so hard and practising writing cuz it would have been an easy superior for me :'( :'( :'( :'( thats not fair there was writing for jmss :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
I am happy there is no writing. I can focus on the verbal and reading where I struggle a bit.
-

In my opinion, the fact that they cancelled a major component is not going to put any of the applicants at an advantage. It will only make the exam more competitive, I am not certain how much 5 subjects affects your score compared to 4 subjects but surely they're just proportions but you don't know. They have left bits out that most people find difficult, making it harder to seperate other students for rankings, removing a component will also make the maxinium aggregate score lower, which doesn't put any applicants at a good position.
And at this point, considering the exam is in 3 days, I will suggest just revising the concepts you have been studying for, cramming in information will not help you.
So edutest sent out the details for the test. There are four components only. Also, what would you need to score to make MHS would 2-4 be enough?
We don't know, I think it really depends how well your perform on each category. Top 11% of students who sit the exam will be awarded a superior, but the people who perform top 1% will ultimately have a better superior and overall score for that section. Therefore, it is not possible to determine which student is likely to receive a place by comparing parent reports. Students are ranked in order of mark (aggregate score) and selected by this order and in accordance with the selection criterion.
I believe how it works, is that edutest adds up all of the total scores and puts students in a ranking accordingly. For instance if a student gets, 40/60 for maths, 30/50 for reading, 30/50 for numerical, 40/60 for verbal, their aggregate score (total mark) would be 40+30+30+40 = 140
it will most likely be creative, especially considering that it is online and with persuasive you look online for statistics and
evidence.
As well as, the examiners are probably more interested in your creative/artistic side rather than your analytic side, as all the other tests are focused on that.
You cannot look 'online for statistics'. The email detailing the examination arrangements explicitely states that your IP must be traceable throughout the duration of the exam. To elaborate, this means that the company that is providing the online test will have access to your browsing history, and what you are doing 'online'. Icognito also doesn't hide your IP address, and all devices in your household will share the same IP address, so they will be able to see if you are searching online for statistics. Furthermore, some students believe that they can circumvent this strict guideline by using a proxy/VPN. But what they do not realise is that websites also have the ability to detect a network change hence being able to identify if a VPN is being used. If they are able to identify if a VPN is being used, that ultimately means, the student has failed to abide the guidelines and could potentially be blacklisted. However, there is no writing component anymore, but I would thought I would add that information.
Please note I am not in any position to be giving you all advice as I do not have experience with the MHS Year 10 entance exam. However, I posted this as I thought I could assist you all to a certain degree.
-
Hi, 1729
Whatever you stated is true. The exam would become more competitive as many people would get 4 superiors or 3 superiors out of 4 superiors. Also, because the test is going to be conducted online people would cheat in verbal reasoning and use calculators in maths. This would put people at a disadvantage and it would be harder for applicants to enter into year 10 for MHS.
For the score, I agree that you would need a good average score out of 220. Like 170 or 150 but in the end, it also depends on your application form, because if you have good extracurricular and sporting achievements it would put you in a good position although you get 2 superiors.
Also, what happens if people use mobile data is this still traceable?
-
Wait so is no internet access allowed for the rest of the household? Also will they only have access to your internet browsing throughout the test. Before and after the test, they wont right.
Also what if data is being used, is it still traceable?
-
That is what I am saying. If you use mobile data they can't trace you.
-
Wait so is no internet access allowed for the rest of the household? Also will they only have access to your internet browsing throughout the test. Before and after the test, they wont right.
Also what if data is being used, is it still traceable?
No. People in your household can still use the internet, but edutest can see what all devices in your household is doing online. For example if there is a quesiton like "Which of the following is a synonym for corpulent", and one of the devices type up "corpulent synoynms" they are obviously going to suspect somebody cheating. But if a member of your household is typing up some completely irrelevent to the questions presented in the examination, they have no reason to blacklist or suspect anything. Also this is to my knowledge, if somebody can send me the actual examination guidelines that will be great! ;D
Edutest will not care about your online activity outside the duration of the examination.
As for mobile data, to my knowledge it really depends what provider you are with, and the configuration of your mobile data. Some mobile datas are configured such as being behind and using a router that hides all IPs behind it using Network Address Translation (NAT), in which case they all share its public IP, and your IP will remain traceable. How do you know how your Mobile data is configured? You simply don't.
I suggest not cheating your way to MHS. As it will no longer be considered an "acheivement", and will not be awarding of the hard work you have put in. For the people who do cheat, chances are they are ignorant and sit the exam with the beleif that the website conducting the examination is dumb and uniformed, which it isn't.
For the score, I agree that you would need a good average score out of 220. Like 170 or 150 but in the end, it also depends on your application form, because if you have good extracurricular and sporting achievements it would put you in a good position although you get 2 superiors.
Yep that is correct, Year 10 entry is heavily focussed on the extra curricular acheivement instead of the centralised examination. However, just aim for your highest, and what happens, happens. At the end of the day you can't really do anything about it, and all that matters is VCE. If you are preparing for an entrance exam, this hard, which I am sure you all are, than that just shows the ethics, hard work and resilience all of you have, especially at this stage. At this rate you can expect a very good VCE score, keep the good work up!
-
yes that is very true. Also my goal is NHS its just that the NHS forum is super dead so MHS is the closest thing haha.
-
also the internet access is only during the exam right, what I do before the exam will be hidden right?
-
I think they will monitor your search history on the day as they wouldn't be bothered searching through your history throughout this week.
-
I am also doing MHS/NHS year 10 entry but I am not sure if they will introduce year 10 content. Someone told me it would not intoduce year 10 stuff because it is a year 9 TO year 10 test but I am not too sure. What is your opinion?
-
Hi,
I did the year 9 selective test last year for Nossal and Melbourne High. For maths, there were basic year 9 concepts. For year 10 I think there will be basic components as well but, who knows it maybe 10 concepts.
-
damn this a dead chat but good luck everyone doing the test tmr :)
-

I just finished the exam how did you guys go???
-
numerical and verbal were alright, i stuffed up comprehension, i stuffed up math even tho it was so easy, i thought i had loads of time. how did u go :(
-
is the year 10 entry test similar to the year 11 test? Did you have the story about the little man with the suit? in reading comprehension
-
yeah we did
-
anyone going to share how they went?
-

d be
I don't wanna be overly confident but it was SO much easier than I thought it would be. I studied a lot of other math concepts that didn't even come up on the exam, so that was kinda a waste. I definitely stuffed up a couple of questions but overall I think I went pretty good. I hope that all of us here can get an interview, but all we can really do now is wait.

can rate each test on a scale of 1-10 for 10 being reallly hard and 1 being rly easy
-
i wish there was still writing so it wouldn't be as competitive, -partly cuz its also my best area, or they at least should have made the maths harder content-wise cuz i heard the maths is meant to be really hard but it was no harder than the jmss entrance test. Now everyone's gonna do pretty good nd people will probably miss out by the smallest margins, thats wot im most afraid of.
-
anyone know when the results are coming out
-

I am terrible at ratings so take mine with a grain of salt. I'd probably give verbal a 6 or 7 maybe 8, numerical and English a 7, and math a 6.
-
anyone know when the results are coming out
JMSS is gonna be about a month, and there's far less people trying out for MHS, but there's also the reports and curricular achievements they have to take in consideration. The interview will probably be out around the same time, but don't take anything I say too seriously.
-
On MHS application, it said late August so yeah
-
anyone else wanna share how they went :D?
-
Nobody :'(?
-
Hi,
The verbal test went good. I would rate it a 8/10 but there was one error with a question. This was question 19 where there was box so you couldn’t select the answer.
Numerical was also good. I would rate it a 8.5/10. I found the questions doable and it was good.
Reading is my worst test but today things were different I felt confident after completion. 8/10.
The maths was definitely harder a little than the jmss test. However, I found the components doable. I would rate a 8.5/10.
Btw 1 means hard. 10 means easy.
Hopefully everyone did well :)

oh shyot, i forgot to sign and send the declaration of authenticity. is it okay if i send it tmr??? :o :o :o :o
-
Send it now bro. It may be a problem.
Also I emailed edutest about the error with the test. So I will tell you what they say.
-
did you guys do the test too? (i did the year 11 nhs entry, based on what I am hearing the tests are basically identical)
-
also did you guys finish?
-
also did you guys finish?
Yea I was able to finish pretty much all of it, but I had to guess like 1 or 2 for numerical.
-
wow i guessed quiet a fair bit but felt a bit better when i got to the end of each test. besides math, like i pre much know whatever i did was right but i thought i had more time so i just took it easy and then i ran out of time for the last 10 questions, didnt even get to guess them. i could have got everything right for maths so easily. this why i wished there was still writing, im good at writing :(

Same, I'm not great at writing, but I practised a lot and tried to improve. It's just kind of disappointing, but at least writings a little more fun now.
-
what r u guys going to do with ur free time now that the tests are over ?? ;D with lockdown it gonna be really boring sooooooooooo wot r ur ideas?
-
I haven't sent the declaration of authenticity, i'm about to do it now as my dad went to work yesterday and i forgot. Will it affect me that bad?

I don’t know dude, but it definitely isn’t the best

I'm pretty sure the people over at edustar read every single form and that takes a while, so I think you should be good.

I just received an email from edutest that was sent as a receipt to confirm my Declaration of Authenticity was received and accepted by them.
-
Here is the photo of result date

Late August is when the interview notice is sent.

My parents haven't received an email saying the authenticity form has been sent is this a bad thing?

Mine is K tho. I got it at 10 too. It shouldn’t be a big problem tho

I also got mine at 4pm.

If successful candidates are notified in August the results would probably come out this week or next week.

What do you mean results? Interview calls or exam results. I thought they meant interviews by successful candidates being notified

Hi guys,
I have some good news. For the verbal reasoning test, question 19 there was no box for these question and making it not doable. So I have emailed edutest and they have replied back saying that this will not impact our mark. Also, I think you are right, it is for the interviews.

Hi Neomi,
I didn't see your message. I got it for MHS.
-
When did you get it?
-
@MAN0033 congrats
-
Hi Neomi,
I didn't see your message. I got it for MHS.
Hi dude!
Did you have any extra curricular activities? And did they email you your marks as well
-
Hey, congratulations for that. I am waiting for Suzaan.
-
I got too excited! I forgot to say Congrats!
-
Hey, congratulations for that. I am waiting for Suzaan.
SAME I am also waiting to here from MHS and see what happened. I don’t think they have given all the results out
-
Sorry guys for late reply I got it at 4:40pm and no results were given just interviews were next week Wednesday. Thanks for all the support as well!! Remember don’t lose hope to those who are waiting!!

Just gotta hope I got an interview for JMSS.
I was curious as to what achievements you had on your application
-
I wrote about tennis achievements, cadets, trumpet, leadership, swimming, interschool sports, table tennis, community service, and sudoku. I also included school reports and icas achievement and last years selective awards and seal acceptance letter and a newspaper article showing my name for tennis.

Bro, that is a full on application
-
U reckon they would've released all the interviews at the same time?
-
Not necessarily. I think some people got interviews at different times and this was the first batch of interviews

Hopefully thats the case, but all I can say is that you should be really proud of yourself.
-
Thanks :D :D
-
I just really wished they released them all at once, and tell us if we failed so that we don't build up false hope.
-
Yes they should of done it like that.
-
I emailed MHS to see when we will receive further interview calls if we do and when rejected participants will receive their email. I will keep you guys updated
-
When is the Nossal Results coming out?
-
anyone else get interview invites/any new info about interview invites??
also anyone who did get an interview invitation what did they say about the interview and how it will be conducted?
-
Yes nossal results, that what i need to do. Last year (year 10 entry), it came out via mail

i don't understand either.

Hi,
Tommy is just saying the results were delivered to him by mail for Nossal year 10 entry last year. I think it is unlikely that it will be delivered by mail with the current scenario but we will have to wait and see how the results come.

-
hey MAN0033, is ur interview this wednesday or next wednesday? what did the letter say? did it specifically say it was the first few people or something?
-
Hi bro,
My interview is this week Wednesday and my time is 9 am. 48 people have been offered an interview and 28 people make it into Melbourne high school.
-
It also did not say anything about the first people. Offers have already been finalized and I think the next shot is JMSS.
-
:'( aw man. good luck tho
how do u know 48 people were offered an interview?
-
It says in the email they sent today.
-
oh alright
wait did they send this to all participants, even those who failed??
-
Don’t they call 60 people for interview
-
I guess not
-
yo was this letter sent to all test takers?
-
Hi Guys,
Some of you wanted to see the latter that was sent yesterday. Here it is.

-
i did not get to the interview stage, idk man have u checked spam/junk
-
Has anyone else gotten a rejection letter?
-
Maybe they didn't send the rejection letter to you yet. However, I can confirm that Aaron is correct as my friend received a letter saying he got rejected and that MHS is accepting 34/48 people and 175 people tried out. Also, it said they wanted humanities/arts-related people.

Did he get an interview?
-
Unfortunately, no.
-
He wanted jmss more and studied for that. He only studied for the last week for mhs that's about it.
-
is getting into jmss harder than getting into mhs via yr 8 entry?
-
Hi,
No the shs test for year 9 entry done in year 8, in my opinion was way harder than the jmss and Mhs test for year 10. I got 2 superiors for the shs in Maths and Nr last year and was unable to secure a seat into nhs. As per the shs test last year, the jmss maths and NR was easier than the shs test and I thought it was going to be harder. Even for Mhs test year 10 entry, all 4 components were easier than the shs test. Especially the NR which was the hardest test last year. Maths was the easiest, last year but the Mhs test year 10 was much easier for maths.
Hopefully, I can help you with this response. I am not trying to brag about my skills if that is all you get from this post. Sorry about that if that’s all you get :'( :'(

do u think the tests were easier this year because we had more practise with the same contents? like were the tests materialistically a lot harder, questions wise, last yr or were they the same, content wise? cuz i don't remember since i only got through like less than 20 questions last time for NR.
-
or were the tests just easier this time, like easier questions? cuz i kinda feel like that's unfair
-
but maybe im just making up excuses for being shit
-
Nah, bro. I found nr easy but it was intimidating at first.
-
Hey guys I got the email this morning from MHS... Not good news but I’m hoping for SCHS
-
Good luck. Was MHS your first option or schs??
-
Good luck. Was MHS your first option or schs??
Well there aren’t really options like year 9 but I am happy to get into either, MHS was obviously superior but I would be more than happy with SCHS. If I may ask, have you gotten an offer or rejection yet?
-
No offer or rejection has been emailed to my parents. In the interview, they said wait 2 weeks so around Sept 1st so next week.

Anyone Know when nossal high results are coming in?
-
Hi,
Nossal usually only offers places with no interviews. So probably next month they will let you know. Good luck bro. You need like 4 superiors to make it.
-
Okay, guys
This is hard for me to say but I did not make MHS 2021 entry. I scored 4/4 superiors and people made it in with 3 aboves. I don't know how this is possible? Could someone explain? I also believe I wrote a good application and did pretty well in the interview.
Thanks for your response, MAN0033
-
It's really sad. How is it possible??? 4/4 superior , and you don't get in. That's really unfair actually. When did you get your detailed result??
-
i don't know man, it's hard. you will surely get jmss tho. u wrote before that u are like a state tennis player too, so idk man. wow the interviews must be pretty picky/hard/u really have to show that you are worth it. idk, my opinions are probably garbage so u shouldn't listen to them. ig u have to rly show how u differ from everyone else but that's obvious. idk what you could have done more, you sound like you did ur best, so thats good for u, as long as u have no regrets and don't feel like you could have done better, getting to the interview stage is quite an accomplishment dude. i guess just focus on what you can do better for the next one.
-
I got an interview too and I did well, but apparently it wasn't enough, but I also got an interview at SCHS :'(
When is your interview?
-
Hi,
Well, this was my result. I am on the waitlist for MHS and I don't know if I will even get an offer. Hopefully, I am on the top of the waiting list as well.

did u go to a tutor or self study for the tests? i went to hendersons, but i'm lasy af so didn't study as much as i should have
-
I just self studied. For NR and Maths I just did the JMSS tests and for the other two components in brushed up on words and did lots of tests. I thought this would be enough to get at least 3 superiors.

how long did u study?
-
For maths and Nr I did tests every day. For verbal and reading I started practicing from June starting. By doing just tests.

MAN0033
Did MHS give you the results or edutest?
-
MHS does not select its students (except for year 9 entry) using the entrance exam. The exam is meerly an indicator of whether or not you would fit in academically at the school. If students score above a certain threshold on the exam (its based on your agregate score NOT how many sups you get, but that being said, you should be above that threshold with around 1 or 2 sups), then their exam result becomes reduntant. From this point onwards, it is your written application and interview that dictates whether or not you get in. This is why superiors do not correlate with acceptance at mhs, its mostly determined by the quality of your written application, school reports, how enthusiastic you are in the interview (and the questions you ask them), and the leadership traits you show. Note though that it is not uncommon for the school to give late offers.
-
Thank you for your honesty. Also, do they give late offers based on people's results?
-
They rank all the interviewed applicants based on how good your interview/written application was, and who they think would best contribute/fit in at mhs. This ranking decides who gets in, and how high up the waiting list you are, the highest ranking student (by interview/application) who did not get in first round is first on the list. Normally, they give second round after 1 or 2 weeks and then third round after jmss gives their results because some people who get in/accept initially decline after getting into jmss. The entrance exam does not determine your final rank - your results are not taken into consideration once you get an interview.
-
Oh, so they don’t really care about your results. They rank you based on how you did you interview and offer spots. So right now my results are useless. I have shown my application and people and they said it was really good. For the interview I think I did well. We will see if I get a offer. It looks unlikely.
-

MAN0033
Well, it’s all right man, I am sure you will be on top of the waiting list. Your results were great! It sucks that you didn’t get in with your application. Good luck in your future studies!
-
Thanks, bro. Hopefully, you do exceptional in your future endeavours.
-
Thanks, bro. Hopefully, you do exceptional in your future endeavours.
I know this is really late, but I just wanna say that you should be really proud of how far you made it through the process, and what you've been able to accomplish in high school. Everyone has to experience failure, and while it may hurt in the moment you'll soon begin to appreciate it. And let us know if you receive an offer !

Let your words crest in us and we shall learn to appreciate and forget 😁.

Thanks for the support guys.
-
Guys apparently the MHS results came today. How did everyone go??
-
:( i got above avg for maths, high avg for verbal and numerical, avg for comprehension. goes to show how lazy i am, even after last time i didn't do much more leading up to the test. i could have got superior in math with like 5 more marks. i would have definitely got superior if there was still creative writing as i came 4th in the hendersons mock test for writing and i didn't even finish sooo. oh well, just sharing.
-
what also didn't help was the day of the test. like the fire alarm went on during reading comprehension, my mum was cooking. after that my head just got all trippy and i played myself for the math test. oh well, no excuses. i didn't work hard enough, congrats to all those who did.
-
I guess this shows how much of an emphasis yr 10 entry has on your ECs.
-
wow i had no chance :(
-
Fucking hell bro. You did so good and didn’t get interviews.
-
how were ur jmss interviews?
-
Fucking hell bro. You did so good and didn’t get interviews.
...You got 4 superiors lmao
-
how were ur jmss interviews?
Ehehhh, guess it was alright, could've been better but not bad.
-
I think the only reason I got an interview was because of 4 superiors, but I believe I had a good application as well. How was your application if you don't mind?
