Shout out to charmanderp whose idea this is
If there's a subject you're interested in but nobody has posted a review yet in Monash University - Subject reviews & ratings, ask here and hopefully someone will have done it and is willing to write something up :)
For example I haven't bothered reviewing the compulsory law subjects because everyone has to do them anyway, but am happy to do so if requested
-
I wouldn't mind seeing a review of second year physics - PHS2011 and PHS2022 - I know there is already one of PHS2011, but I wouldn't mind hearing more peoples perspectives. But I would really like to hear about PHS2022 as this one seems more inter sting to me.
Also, and this applies to the review of current review of PHS2011 up there now, but sometimes in the 'textbook recommendation' part the reviewer says 'you don't need the textbook' or something to that effect. That's fine, but personally I would like it if the textbooks used in the given unit were listed anyway as well as these comments, so for people (Like me) who are interested in doing some research into them can :)
-
Has anyone taken SCI2010, MIC2011, MON2001 or MON2002? Am taking these anyway, but I'd like to know what to expect :)
-
If anyone has done:
- ACF3491: Advanced financial accounting theory and practice
- BFF3351: Investment banking
Or the Clayton-equivalent of either of those two units, I'd love a subject review!
-
Has anyone taken SCI2010
I'll work on that, should be up in a day or two
Anyone here done CHM3922, CHM3930, CHM3941, CHM3952, MTH3051 or MTH3011? Would love reviews on those :)
-
Hey has anyone here done ATS2- oh... oh... no one?
I... I guess I'll just be going, then.
-
Be good if any of these subjects can get reviewed:
ETC2450
ETC3400
ETC3410
ETC3450
ECC2000
ECC2010
FIT1040, FIT1029, FIT1008
FIT2004, FIT2014, FIT3139
-
It would be good to hear Psychology units undertaken at Clayton campus :)
-
Any law electives really, but in particular these would be good:
LAW4184
LAW4225
LAW4227
LAW4537
-
Any chance anyone has done (at Caulfield or the clayton equivalent):
MGF2341: Managing employee relations
BTF2991: Employment law
MGF3361: Performance management
MGX3441: Human resource strategy
MGF3430: International Human resource management
MGF3450: Managing conflice
MGF3881: Current issues in human resource management

There actually are a fair few arts reviews in the thread :3
-
Changed my sem 1 units a little; has anyone done IMM2011? (Would appreciate a review :) )
-
Has anyone done MKC3460: Integrated marketing communication, or MKC3300: Marketing law.
Trying to decide which is better.
The only thing putting me off MKC3460 is the 6000 group essay. As for MKC3300, is it similar to BTC1110??

Any of these would be awesome:
MEC2401 Dynamics I
MEC2402 Engineering design I
MEC2403 Mechanics of materials
MEC2456 Engineering computational analysis
-
eng1090 pl0x

PHS2011 please...I think the one on the board is a bit biased.

First two have been done pretty recently (as in first sem this year), so it wouldn't have changed too much.

He speaks the truth, you can ask anyone that did PHS2011 and they will agree with that review. Anyways although I did PHS2022 this time last year, I wouldn't mind posting up a review if people are still interested!

Double major in maths all the way :)

Well, fuck... after reading your reviews of PHS2011 and PHS2022 I'm certainly not looking forward to completing my physics minor :-\
I recommend doing the unit with the mind set of "it's okay to not understand something" because 99% of the people won't know what's going on either, especially quantum mechanics, if someone said that they understand the quantum world, then they haven't seen enough of it. My final advice is don't ever overload while doing a phs unit unless if you feel like crying everyday

If anyone is doing Korean can you please let me know how that is?

I did Korean introductory 1 & 2 this year. No one would ever fail these units. Easy HD if you put in even only a little bit of effort. And it's super fun!! :D I'll write a detailed review tonight if you want.

I'm suddenly no longer looking forward to an Astrophysics major

I'm suddenly no longer looking forward to an Astrophysics major
Astrophysics major is a bit different... level 2 physics units are recommended in third year astro so they assume you already know these concepts..then they build mathematical modelling onto physics...it's like applied physics..on the other hand, physics rewards more conceptual understanding rather than maths

Yes please! :D Are you planning on continuing Korean next year?
Will do it in a minute :)
I was planning to do from Korean 1 to 6 as I enjoyed it and did pretty well this year, but well, I'm going to do only Maths and Chemistry from next year unfortunately :(
Buuuut, I might fall in love with Korean over the holidays again and decide to do it next year, I change my mind all the time :p
-

Korean Introductory 1 review is up. I will do Introductory 2 tomorrow but you really should expect pretty much the exact same thing :p

For example I haven't bothered reviewing the compulsory law subjects because everyone has to do them anyway, but am happy to do so if requested
When you get the chance, would be great if a review could be done on LAW2101 Contract A, so I know what to expect.
Thanks!

If anyone could review the following, that'd be great:
Arts:
- Bioethics
- Religion & Theology (Seems like a recent update to the Monash website says that it's just called Theology now)
- Journalism
-
FIT1008!
If anyone could do that, I'd be very thankful.
-
sorry to bump but if someone could review MTH1010: Functions and their applications, for a friend of mine, it would be really appreciated :D

These are all areas of study rather than subjects. Did you have any particular religion and theology units you were considering?

Yeah my bad, noob move on my behalf LOL
ATS1041 - World religions
ATS1263 - Bioethics: Current controversies
Not too interested in journalism anymore :P
-
Id really, really like a review on any of those religion and theology subjects as well. I've done all the philosophy ones based around religion if anyone wants reviews of those, there are already some in the thread.
It's a shame Monash Arts moved to the new bullshit course structure of capstone/forced units for all the arts majors though, much less choice..

lol no worries. I did World Religions last year and it was pretty good. The assessment was pretty easy (just tutorial participation/attendance, a couple of article summaries/synthesis exercises, an essay and an exam if i remember correctly.)
The lectures and tutorials were easy to follow and easy lecture was given by a different lecturer with expertise in that particular religion. Each week looked at a different religion (Aboriginal spirituality, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, new religious movements like Scientology etc) and the essay was a topic chosen from a list based on one of these religions. You are given roughly 10 essay topics to choose from per religion so there is heaps of choice.
The exam was relatively simple and the lecturer/tutor (Constant Mews) prepared for it well.
Overall, the subject was good, though it could get a bit boring sometimes but that's the same with any subject - some topics will interest you more than others. Workload wasn't too bad either. Only 1 x 2hr lecture + 1 x 1 hr tutorial per week and the weekly readings/essay readings and research :)
Id really, really like a review on any of those religion and theology subjects as well. I've done all the philosophy ones based around religion if anyone wants reviews of those, there are already some in the thread.
Medieval Europe and Renaissance Europe are both classified under the religion and theology banner too and they are both really good (I'm pretty sure I reviewed them in the thread already)

Definitely. I hated it and had to re-do my whole subject selection. Though it could be worse - at least there is still some choice, even if it means the classes are more generalised than they used to be...

Anyone able to do ESC1011/ESC1022?

ATS1304, ATS1305 and ATS1904, if possible.

Hi all,
Does anybody know if seminars for the following units are going to be recorded?
ATS2667 Language Across Time
ATS2676 Sociolinguistcs
Thanks in advance!

ATS2667 Language Across Time
ATS2676 Sociolinguistcs

Monash University Lectures Online (MULO) generally gives a good indication of what subjects typically get recorded or not
(remember that link currently only has semester 2 and summer semester units on there, for semester 1 you'll just have to wait and see or contact the lecturer and ask... but be careful because some lecturers will get annoyed if you ask that because they assume you're just trying to get out of going to class)
-
Thanks, Ninwa. I had a look at MULO but as you say, only Semester 1 units are listed. Thanks for the reply! :D
-
Has anyone done the following units:
ATS1279 Media and culture
ATS1280 Communications and society
-
ETC2450 - Applied forecasting for business and economics
Anyone done it, or heard anything about it? It looks up my ally, but haven't heard anything about it and it will muck of most of my many and confusing plans if I try and squeeze it in (damn semester 1 only!).
-
MTH1010 - Functions and their applications
I can't do MTH1020 without doing this and I only got a 24 for methods, so I wanted to know the level of difficulty of this unit compared to VCE methods, especially how the exam is compared to the VCE one. Is it much harder?
ATS1301 - Australian physical environments: Evolution, status and management
I'm planning on doing this unit or FIT1029 this semester so I was wondering how this unit is?

I did it, i haven't wrote a review. I probably wont considering i did it semester 1, 2011 and its now semester 2, 2014. I feel i dont remember enough to review it properly. If you search the forums, i have had made numerous long posts on it to people asking about it though.
I was in the exact same position down to the methods score. I wont lie, people struggled, i know people who failed. I only passed myself (didnt work very hard at it though). If you were bad at math the first time, that trend is likely to continue. It sucks to say it but thats just how the world usually works. Not to say you cant dramatically improve given effort but you have to be realistic as well.
Its 2 year method course compressed into 12 weeks, its a bit hectic. Many people failed due to lack of foundations or being bad at math the first time around. There's no hand holding or favours here like in VCE, it's fairly fast and theres no CAS to hold your back (good or bad depending on view).
If you need to do it then do it (i thought i did, wish i didn't). But if you need to do MTH1020, consider how good your math skills really are. Depending on your degree, the math wont go away either, it'll just get harder, if you're not on the ball you'll just fall behind. You really need to look inside yourself and do a realistic assessment. That said, there is no harm in trying it i guess.
I can give you the old unit guide if i can find it (bit outdated by now) and answer any other questions you might have (keeping in mind i did it awhile ago).
-
Would love if someone could pull out a review for MTH3241 and MTH3251 before re-enrollment next year. :)
-
I'll jump on this too and say that I would love an ATS1316 - Contemporary Worlds 2 review, if anyone's done it.
Or even a slothpomba style post that just answers these questions three: will I be at much of a disadvantage for either not having done CW1 or not having any sort of history background, and how did you find the assessment?
-
MTH3251
yes please

I did it [redacted] years ago so I'm also not qualified to give a proper review. However
- no you won't be disadvantaged, IIRC there wasn't really any assumed knowledge from CW1
- I didn't have a history background and I HD'd it
- the assessments have probably changed by now but when I did it, it was an essay plus an exam. For the exam, they gave us a few essay topics beforehand, and the exam essay was going to be one of those. It wasn't difficult at all.

I don't think I had trouble understanding the concepts learnt in class. I think what really stumped me in the assessments and exams during VCE is all the analysis questions because I didn't understand what the question was asking so I ended not even being able to do the questions even though I probably would have knew. That is really what was troubling me because most of the assessment tasks were all analysis questions which I could barely do while we also had one assessment which was MC and short answer which I did pretty well on. I've read the other topics that talk about MTH1010 but they don't really answer my question. I just really want to know how the assessments and exam are for MTH1010, as in, are the questions all analysis (the questions that have like paragraphs of words)?

Just wondering if anyone has a review for CHM1011 but from a Year 12 perspective (basically if you've done Uni Chem at Monash then that'd be awesome)! I'm not too sure how different it is to the reviews in the actual thread (whether the reviewer was doing it as a first year or as a Year 12 Student that is).

If you're interested in actual content, AFAIK enhancement and the usual CHM1011 are exactly the same. If you're curious about what it's like doing it just as enhancement, the experience would probably be similar to any other enhancement subject, so you could ask anyone who has done an enhancement subject. (last I heard, lots of those at JMSS, hahah. :P)
You could also ask at open day this year - go along and see if you can find Chris Thompson (first year co-ordinator for chem, I'm assuming he'll show up to open day), and see what he notices of the students that do enhancement.
(just putting my two cents here in case no enhancement people are on AN, because I've seen a lot of physics/maths, but barely any chem...)

Haha yeah there's quite a few of us doing enhancement subjects (mainly Biology and Maths) but the ones who do Chemistry give me vague answers so it doesn't really help though I haven't asked about other subjects. I have briefly met and spoken to Chris Thompson before (cool guy) so hopefully he rocks up at school or Open Day and I can talk to him there but for now I guess I might have to chase some people >.<

I didn't do MTH1010 but I just had a look at the exam paper. Out of the 6 questions, 3 are purely computation, eg.
Solve or find the inverse of .
And the remaining 3 are word questions. But they are nothing like VCE Maths Methods, but more like Year 10 linear equations sort of word questions.
Eg. A population of birds in a National Park varies in size over a year. The population is at its lowest of 100 in July and rises to a maximum of 1000 in January, then falling again to 100 by the next July. Assuming that the population size is a sinusoidal function of time,
(i) sketch a graph showing how the population varies with time over 2 years. Use the month of July as the starting month; and
(ii) determine a formula for the curve you sketched in part (i).
Hope this helps a little.

Wow, thank you! If most of the questions are like that in the exam then I definitely think I can do alright on it. Would MTH1020 be similar? Not the same content but as in how the questions are set out like the examples you showed above.

I didn't do MTH1020 personally either so I really can't comment on assignments but looking at the exam paper, the maths involved is definitely harder than MTH1010 (not surprisingly) but again, out of the 6 questions, there would be total of ~1 has 'context', all others are purely computation. Most maths unit from MTH1030/35 onwards, for exams at least, the questions involve computation, deriving certain results/methods for applied maths units or proving theorems for pure maths units, but no more high school 'analysis questions'.
So don't be put off by the stupid VCE Maths Methods and definitely consider doing some MTH units if you think you can handle the theory. Good luck.

Probably a long shot, but I would be more than grateful if anybody had input on:
- ATS2682 (/ATS3682): Second Language Acquisition and Attrition
- ATS2679 (/ATS3679): Psycholinguistics and Child Language Acquisition
- ATS2681 (/ATS3681): Structure of English
- ATS2671 (/ATS3671): Managing Intercultural Communication
- ATS2628: Power and Poverty in a Globalised World
- ATS2698: Middle East Politics: Continuity, Change, Conflict and Co-operation
- ATS2872: Topics in Indian Philosophy
In return, I have completed the following units, should anybody have any questions:
- ATS1314: Human Rights Theory 1
- ATS1325: Contemporary Worlds 1
- ATS1338: The Language Game: Why Do We Talk The Way We Do?
- PSY1011: Psychology 1A
- ATS1315: Human Rights Theory 2
- ATS1326: Contemporary Worlds 2
- ATS1339: Describing and Analysing Language and Communication
- PSY1022: Psychology 1B
- ATS1371: Life, Death and Morality (Introduction to Philosophy A)
- ATS2637: The Human Body and the International Marketplace
- ATS2667: Language Across Time
- ATS2767: Sociolinguistics
Please and thank you!

Haven't done any of the units you're after, but I'd love to hear anything you have to say about contemporary worlds 2! Especially about the article review and the presentation. (If that was in your year of completion)
-
If anyone could review ATS 1835 (Time, Self, and Mind), that'd be awesome. Well, I don't particularly need a review, I just want to know how easy the assessment and exam is.

Hi Achre,
I won't write a full review, as I can't remember the unit well enough to do one justice. I very much enjoyed both Contemporary Worlds 1 and 2, but probably more so Contemporary Worlds 2. I came in very, very ignorant in regard to world history, and felt as if I finished Contemporary Worlds with a better (but still limited) understanding of some fairly important historical issues.
Unfortunately, I don't remember an article review nor a presentation of any description. I'm not sure if the assessment has changed from last year, or if I just have a poor memory of the unit. The way I remember it, assessment included a website review (which may be the article review to which you are referring), which I found rather mundane but easy enough; a major essay; an in-class test; and the exam, which was nicely structured and easy to revise for.
The unit itself focuses on globalisation (which discusses issues briefly covered in HHD Unit 4, if you did that), including things such as global marketing, migration and the environment. My tutor - Jess O'Leary - was one of the best I've had, but I'm not sure if she will be part of the unit again next semester.
Apologies for not being able to provide a more detailed review. I would definitely recommend the unit, though!
All the best. :)

Hi, Joseph could you please tell what PSY1022, ATS1339, AND ATS2667. Cheers.
Certainly. I have just written a unit review for ATS2667 for you here.
As for PSY1022 and ATS1339, I'm afraid I don't remember them quite as well, for I completed them last year. However:
PSY1022: This is the only unit I have done that I genuinely disliked. The assessment was vague and frustrating, the unit felt poorly organised, and things kept changing at the last minute. Some of the lecturers were okay, but others I found confusing and unapproachable. I didn't much like its structure, either, for lectures and labs from PSY1011 had been replaced with lectorials, which led to less feedback for students. I think Psych is great, and I intended on at least minoring in it before this unit, but it really did put me off. In saying that, keep in mind that this was only the experience of one student (although I have heard numerous others suggesting that Psych in general is rather poorly run), and a student who was fairly disenchanted with life in general at the time. The content is largely covered in Year 12 Psych but does present some new information and ideas. Most of these new ideas I found unappealing, for they related to things such as research methods, but maybe that's just me. In summary, I didn't particularly enjoy the unit, but I really, really don't want to put you or anybody else off, as it was probably more a poor reflection on me and where I was at the time rather than the unit itself. And, from what I understand, you need this unit to finish your first-year sequence and study Psychology further.
ATS1339: To be honest, I remember very little from this unit apart from the fact that I enjoyed it very much. I'm sorry that I can't contribute more, but I would certainly recommend ATS1339. The assignments prepare you well for (at least the two units I have done from) second-year Linguistics. I had Anthony and then Cat as my tutor (Anthony left halfway through the semester, which was planned), both of whom were excellent and very much helped to consolidate knowledge from the lectures.
All the best.

Would love to see a reviews on :
ATS1111 - Indonesian Introductory 1 (I know there's a review of general languages which is really helpful, but would love some insight into this specifically. :) )
ATS2624 - Global Governance
ATS2706 - Foreign Policy Analysis
Thanks! :)

Has anyone done:
SCI1020
Dont have time for a full review, will do mini one here.
Very easy, it assumes you know zero mathematics. If you love math, you might get bored in this. I took it because im bad at math and i still needed to fulfil the math requirement of the science degree. The subject itself is rather easy but you cant slack off either. There's still heaps and learn to do but if you do it, it is easy. All the labs are done in MS-Excel (more or less), using the statistical functions. A few assignments have components done by hand but they're fairly easy. The exam itself shouldnt be too difficult if you know what you're doing.
IF you're just looking at something to fill the math requirement, this is it. If you want to pick up some more skills/better at math, maybe look elsewhere.

Hi mseleanor! I'm doing Global Governance at the moment, and I'll probably end up writing a full review later after the semester's ended. But I'll write a couple comments now whilst I procrastinate from doing the essay...
So far, it's been a very up and down experience... Anne McNevin is an alright coordinator, but her lectures aren't particularly engaging or thought-provoking. I have her as a tutor too, and classes are generally boring because the topics she chooses to discuss don't interest me or any of my classmates. We have had some guest lecturers, who have been good to mix things up. However, we had Sara Meger for 3 weeks and her lectures were baaaddd. She doesn't seem to know the content well enough, so whenever anyone asked questions she couldn't answer them.
The assignments are also very different, focusing a lot more on applying knowledge and being able to think critically and engage with the topic. For the major essay, we watch a film then write about the aspects of GG in it (that's simplifying it a bit but that's the gist of it). Personally, I'm more of a fan of the standard essays, where there's a list of like 10 essay questions to choose from.
Overall, I haven't found it to be very interesting. But at the same time, it has not been particularly challenging, so that's a benefit!

Thanks ChloeCameleon! Ugh that sucks to hear. My intro to IR unit this year has been so good, probably because of my co-ordinator and lecturer Ben Wellings, who's amazing! Hopefully GG will be switched up in those respects next year ;)
Yeah alot of people have told me int rel (and other arts subjects) become much more about depth after first year.
Thanks so much for the insight. I now know what I'm getting myself into :P Excited to hear your end of year review!

Hey! I also did those units this year! Maybe we were in the same classes :D
I can't tell you from first hand, but my friend told me that both of those units are pretty difficult interms of workload and content. I'll see if I can ask him for a bit more advice and post it up :)

Does any have reviews for any of the second year atmospheric science subjects?

I have a friend (not on ATAR Notes) who did the first semester one. I can ask him for more information if you want, but whenever I've heard him talk about it he said he didn't like it because it wasn't for him. However, he thought the unit was taught moderately well and would probably be enjoyable for someone who was more interested in applied mathematics.

Yeah if that's possible mate. Looking to head down that path, but there is a lack of info (probably due to how few do that major).

Civil Engineering is my desired course after finishing highschool but my questions are on civil engineering in general if that's okay. You can PM me your response if this is too off-topic from the point of this thread.
-How important is chemistry in civil engineering? I don't mind it, but I'd prefer not taking it in VCE.
-How are you finding civil engineering at Monash? Is there a specific reason you chose Monash over Melb uni?
-I've heard from people that studying engineering is extremely stressful and time consuming? I don't mind working hard for all days of the week but I still want to be able balance my social life.
-What stream of civil engineering are you most interested in?
Thanks!

I'll just reply here in case other people might have similar questions :)
-How important is chemistry in civil engineering? I don't mind it, but I'd prefer not taking it in VCE.
Its importance is negligible - I can't recall ever having to recall knowledge from chemistry in any of my units. I'll note that while you don't have to take chemistry in VCE as long as you do physics, you will have to do a foundation chemistry unit in first year as a replacement for one of your three level one electives if you opt not to study it in year 12.
-How are you finding civil engineering at Monash? Is there a specific reason you chose Monash over Melb uni?
I've enjoyed it so far, although after 2 years of doing just engineering I transferred to eng/sci so that I could take a lot more maths units :P I chose Monash over UoM due to the common first year, its reputation for engineering and mostly its location.
-I've heard from people that studying engineering is extremely stressful and time consuming? I don't mind working hard for all days of the week but I still want to be able balance my social life.
Like most university studies engineering can be time consuming and stressful at times. However, if you maintain reasonable work ethic you should not be find it too challenging. I've managed to balance my studies and social life quite easily but not everyone's the same and there are university services to deal with this.
-What stream of civil engineering are you most interested in?
At this point in time, most likely traffic and transport engineering, although I'm undecided.
Thanks!
You're welcome :)

-I've heard from people that studying engineering is extremely stressful and time consuming? I don't mind working hard for all days of the week but I still want to be able balance my social life.
Just want to chip in my 2cents regarding Civil Engineering from what I've seen. I have heaps of friends during/just completed their Civil Engineering degree. Generally, I've been told that the concepts in Civil is not that hard to grasp if you put in the work, but there is a TON of group work/design work especially in 3rd and 4th year of the degree.
What this means is that it is going to be extremely time consuming to get a good grade in them. The work required in a design unit to go from a pass (50) to a High Distinction (80) is exponential. I personally salute of my Civil friends who are by far the most hardworking/workaholic stream among the other streams.
In short, even if you're a genius, you will need to sacrifice on your social life is you want to do well in Civil. It is a very time consuming stream (more so than the other streams IMO) and the amount of work you put in is at our discretion as there'll always be things to improve on.
But yeah just come to Monash we have a common first year which then you can decide at the end of it after getting a taste of each stream. Melbourne doesn't allow that option and takes 5 years instead of the standard 4.

Thanks for the insight Phy124 and JinXi. Thinking about what I want to do in uni is frightening..

Didn't do MTH3310 but had a lot of mates do it this sem. In short, they didn't like it. From what they were saying it seemed to be a lot of material crammed into a short space of time (talking relative to other maths units), and a bit all over the place, although I guess it was the first year they were running it. They had 5 or 6 different lecturers which each focused on a certain topic/area (mostly which was their research area), with the lecturers changing around every 2 or so weeks. Compared to the other 2 maths units they did this sem (MTH3060 and MTH3020), they seemed to be having to put in a lot more time for MTH3310. Again, I didn't take the unit but saw the effects of it, so take this with a grain of salt.
Did MTH3051 in first semester. The assignments will require you to be able to use Matlab, but the exam is purely based on the maths that you learn in the unit, and even then the assignments are a mix of matlab/code and the maths itself. With that being said, I don't think it would be too hard to start off with without any prior matlab coding knowledge (kinda what the unit is for in the science dept), it would be an advantage if you had some prior experience but I don't think it was necessary (a fair few of the eng/sci kids take it because it covers a bit of what we've already covered).
P.S. I think I may have half met you through a friend during the second year physics exams this semester :P

I can one up this - I had one friend who just seemed to pour all his revision time into one section of this unit. He asked me to help him with some of the stochastic stuff (because Tim called it assumed knowledge and he'd never seen it), and frankly the "assumed knowledge" was beyond the understanding of second year probability, and looked like things that were taught as assessable knowledge for the third year stochastic units (primarily MTH3241, but I haven't done it as of yet so I don't know for certain if that's the case). Didn't see any of the deterministic stuff, though, so I can't comment on actual content from that way.
Also - needed more effort than MTH3060? As in, the one with a 50% fail rate? Ouch. :o

Thanks the heads up about MTH3310! Looks like I may have to rearrange my applied math units for next year for the 100th time. It's so hard because they're all restricted to certain semesters.
Well I was planning to start MTH3051 over the holidays to get my coding up to scratch as I found the tute and lecture notes online (Hopefully they remain relevant for next year!), otherwise most of my friends are eng. so I should have enough help :)
Oh really which friend? I was the short(ish) girl with long brown hair (so descriptive :P) Did you hear that the exams are being scaled by 1.25! It makes me so worried because everyone must have done so bad.

Oh no, assumed knowledge is my worst fear haha. Looks like MTH3310 is out!
Is MTH3060 really that hard? I may need it to replace MTH3310 :S

Has anyone done BCH2011? Thanks :)
-
I did it this year - thought it was a pretty nice unit. It's set at a fairly introductory level, and basically covers the basics of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Martin (the unit coordinator when I took it) is a nice guy, and teaches from first principles quite well. You don't really go into metabolic cycles until BCH2022 though. Labs are decent - make sure you know how to do concentration calculations and prepare solutions though. Coming from actual chemistry labs, these are a bit more relaxed. The midsem test was a bit too long for its 45 min timeframe, but the end-of-semester exam was not too bad if you knew most of the material. Particularly in the first half of semester, you get quite a few practice questions in the lectures themselves, which are helpful.
If you have more specific questions, feel free to PM me or post here!

Thank you :)
I did CHM3941 in 2014. You'll probably notice that the labs for this subject (as for pretty much all of the major 3rd year Chem subjects) are listed as going for four hours.
I think that we had labs on 9 of the weeks (no lab on first week, last week, and one week in the middle). These were made up of a 3 week prac, 2x2 week pracs, and 2x1 week pracs. Previously, there used to be a third 1-week prac, but they took that out when I did it.
The labs don't necessarily match up with what you're learning in lectures. I think in your starting lab, you'll learn about working in an inert atmosphere, as some of the reagents you use actually react upon contact with oxygen and water. Also, you get to use the dry ice/nitrogen containers, required when you want to cool things to -78 degrees (or something like that). Your prac manual details what you have to do quite well, and should have a copy of key research papers at the back, for easy reference. You probably won't spend the full four hours on all weeks. Particularly on the multiple-week pracs, working efficiently means that you might be able to leave a bit earlier on the final week. I was probably the slowest person in my lab session, and there were still weeks where I left early.
The lab manual and Moodle have guidelines on how to write your lab reports. I suggest paying attention to the uploaded marking schemes on Moodle - there are specific marks allocated to a bunch of stuff, and unfortunately the lab demonstrators can't give you those marks if they're not in your report. The lab demonstrators are really nice people though. Also, you will probably be expected to look at some research papers and use their findings to help write your discussion in your lab report. Your lab manual will contain a list of suggested papers for each prac - these are well worth reading for an understanding of what is going on.
If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me or to post here! :)

These are all new units for 2015, nobody's done them. ATS1353 used to be Intro to Politics though, and it has the same coordinator, so that might be similarish though.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if someone could provide a review on CHM2942 - Biological chemistry. Including details about the difficulty of assessment and its comparison to say CHM2911- Synthetic Chem. Looking at getting a minor in chem, interested in the overlap of biology & chem so thought this would be ideal. Probably will major in developmental biology, so not much point in doing CHM2922. If I was going to take CHM2911, I'd probably go with a Pharmacology unit.
Would be greatly appreciated!

Hoping someone could do a review on any of the third year microbiology units, and IMM3990?
I can't comment on the microbio units, but since IMM3990 is a research project, there's not really much different to any other research project - just as long as you have a good supervisor and pick a topic you're interested in. My advice is to ask a lecturer you liked the content of/liked as a person to be your supervisor - don't assume they have to say yes, of course, but they most likely will. If there weren't any lecturers you liked, just scroll through the honours handbook until you find a project that sounds cool.

Hoping I can get some advice on economics units - any recommendations and ones to be avoided?

Thanks for the reply :) I'm wondering about the assessments etc. I've heard there's a report and an oral presentation, so does that mean there's an allocated class time just for the orals? I'm just worried if I end up choosing a supervisor that hasn't offered/done the IMM3990 unit before and I'd have to explain it and stuff (and so far I really don't know much of it as to what's expected).

I will eventually review all four of my present units. However, if anybody is considering them for next semester, I can prioritise a particular unit/particular units. They are:
- ATS2640 The ethics of global conflict;
- ATS2683 The analysis of discourse: Texts, narrative and society;
- ATS3627 Global cultures, local traditions: Creating and consuming (popular) culture; and
- ATS3673 History and sociolinguistics of English.
Cheers.

Hi all,
Being a prospective actuarial student at Monash, I wanted a review of the following subjects if at all possible please.
There's a big lack of ETC units on that list so I'll put some up. It's been a while since I took some of these subjects though.
Keep in mind Monash has restructured the actuarial subjects for 2016, so ETC3420 (and possibly 3530/2430) have split into two subjects. This is great for you, because 3420 used to be really packed with material and was easily the hardest subject in the major.
Sadly, I can't really remember much from ETC3460 or ETC3510. 3510 (aka MTH3251, the two subjects are identical) is really fun if you're into maths and very well taught. 3460 is a massive blank except that some of the mathematical derivations in the CAPM etc. are quite long.

I did ATS1321 last semester. I can do a review later today; is there anything in particular you want to know?

Just want to know which of these two units I should choose for one of my First year units :)

ACC1100: Intro to financial Accounting
ACC1200: Accounting for managers
Just want to know which of these two units I should choose for one of my First year units :)
This is the first year that they have split the first-year accounting unit into two (there used to be only one compulsory unit called ACC1000: Principles of accounting and finance), so there is no one who can really give a review of either of them.
Since you did Accounting in VCE, I would say that the content of ACC1100 (Introduction to financial accounting) will probably be more familiar to you (my memory of VCE Accounting is quite faded now, but I remember it being mostly financial accounting and hardly any management accounting).
Also, it looks like Alan Serry is running ACC1100, while John Gerrand is running ACC1200. Based off that alone, I would recommend ACC1100, as I much preferred Alan's lectures to John's (I also had Alan as a tutor for one of my first-year accounting subjects, and his tutorials were very helpful).

Would ACC1100 be the same if I chose to do it second semester compared to the first or would somebody else be running it (since I happen to have a clash with my timetable if I include what I want for this semester)?
-
Would anyone be able to review the first year law units? Just want to know more about what they're like and what to expect, plus any tips people have!

From the handbook entry, it looks like Alan Serry is running it in both semesters, so yeah, it should be the same.

Surprised I couldn't find anything on BFC1001
Brief overview anyone?

Surprised I couldn't find anything on BFC1001
Brief overview anyone?
They did a fairly massive overhaul of the commerce degree and majors this year, and BFC1001 is a completely new subject. Previously, finance was included at the first-year level within the unit ACC1000: Principles of accounting and finance, where it was only covered for around three weeks. The handbook entry on BFC1001 looks quite bare, so I do not understand how they will be stretching it out to a whole semester, but it seems like they will be teaching more theory about the financial system, investment, risk, etc. but it will all be introductory stuff that you will cover in more depth in later subjects. I am pretty sure the maths will still be quite basic (i.e. calculating the present/future value of an amount by discounting/compounding).

Has anyone done MGC2021: Organisations and society and/or MGC2430: Human Resource Management? I'd love to know personal opinions on these units :)

By any chance if anyone has reviews for the following subjects I would greatly appreciate it:
• ATS1263: Bioethics: Current controversies
• ATS1264: Bioethics, justice and the law
• ATS2637: Global bioethics
• ATS2871: Environmental ethics
Looking to possibly cross-credit some bioethics/environmental philosophy (stuff that aren’t offered at Unimelb) subjects at Monash if they are any good. There is a review for Global bioethics under its’ old name- The Human Body and the International Marketplace. The words ‘fairly general overview’ threw me off a bit so I would like other opinions. As long as they go into a reasonable amount of depth and are well organised, it works well for me 😊

Thanks in Advance
ATS2160 was a newly introduced unit in first semester this year with only 57 enrolments according to SETU, so you may have trouble finding someone on here.
Luckily as it was a first semester unit, if you go to the handbook page and click on the unit guide link (or search through the unit guide manager), you'll be able to read a deeper breakdown of weekly topics and assignments.
-
if anyone studied/is studying biomed+law or biomed+eng double degree, would love to hear your options/review about the courses :)

ATS2706 Foreign policy analysis, and ATS 3582 Arab-Israeli conflict. Both have good SETU results, but the latter doesn't have many respondents or many students at all, so reviews for either or both would be appreciated. :)
-
Would love to see some reviews for some Criminology units! :) If anyone can spare the time to right a review that would be much appreciated.
Preferably first year units? ATS1420, ATS1421 & ATS1422 would be fabulous!
If not, I will more than happy to write the reviews myself when I complete the units. Thanks :)
