Title: Juris Doctor
Post by: j-awad11 on March 25, 2014, 01:34:17 pm
Anybody here done or is doing the Master of Laws (Juris Doctor). Just wanting to know your background, what degree you came from in undergrad & how long it took/takes you to do.
Thanks. :)

How long what took them to do?

Obviously not a JD student myself but I know several JD students with the following undergrad degrees:

- Monash arts majoring in criminology (Monash JD)
- Melbourne arts majoring in criminology or similar (Melbourne JD)
- Monash arts majoring in Asian studies (Monash JD)
- Monash arts majoring in psychology (Monash JD)
- RMIT graphics design or fashion design or something like that (Monash JD)
- Deakin commerce, not sure what major (Deakin JD)
- Monash fine arts (might have been a transfer to LLB rather than JD, I don't remember)
- Monash arts majoring in French (Latrobe JD)

I think she means how long the JD takes. The JD takes 3 years full time, with overloading I think (?). As shown, the background or degree doesn't particularly matter ^^

Yeah, I meant how long the JD took.
See, I'm in a BA and I only have 2 semesters left & I'll be graduating mid-2015, & I've been told that you can apply for August intake into the JD that takes 3 years but that overloading is unlikely to be granted due to the intensiveness of the course. Which is no problem, I don't mind the 3 years but I just wanted to see if people have overloaded/not overloaded & how long it has taken them to complete after their BA or other degree.

I think it's possible to overload, but it's very exhausting because (I think) the JD follows the trimester system so you already have much fewer holidays than you're used to.

In the long run, that year saved isn't going to matter nearly as much as the potential negative impact on your average that overloading could very likely have. If you're going to be a lawyer, your academic results are by far the most important thing on your resume to a law firm (there was actually a survey on this recently but I can't find it atm) - they don't care if you were 23 or 25 when you finished.

yeah i understand it's going to be full on. does anybody know what the timetable will be like? I've looked online and it says (for most units) 30 hours of seminars plus library classes. so does that mean they set the seminar times and you just have to attend or are there choices like an undergrad timetable?

Some electives are intensive (i.e. something like 9am - 4am every day for 5 days)

Source: am sitting in one of those classes right now :P

So do the streams mean you pick one or that you have to go to all? Also, how many units are there per trimester?

Does somebody have their own or a friend's timetable that they wouldn't mind showing me? I just want to get a sense of what's it like.

Here - most of these don't run every week, check the dates

Thanks for that, I was getting confused because it would say there are 30 contact hours and I thought that they were all classes instead of both classes and outside study time. :P

So what do you guys think I should do? I'm due to graduate from my BA mid 2015, is there any point in trying to transfer into undergraduate law (namely, Arts/Law), or should I just finish it out and apply for Aug intake of the Juris Doctor?

I mean if you can transfer all your credit from BA and get into arts/law I can't see why not. Remember the JD isn't guaranteed entry anyway, and much less so for a CSP place.

yeah that's what I'm thinking, i don't want to graduate and for some reason don't get into the juris doctor. i mean, either way id be graduating around the same time for both if i start arts/law next year (highly doubt mid year this year because they rarely ever do it). i guess i could use the jd as like an option 2. what are the chances of getting into it anyway? like is it super cooper competitive or are the chances really really good if you have a Distinction average from your undergrad?
