OMG. i wish i was in year 12 right now LOL. too bad ):
-
Sounds awesome, but I don't have my issues oral until term 2. :| So what should I do?

Perhaps a spontaneous speech? Or you could prepare it from now. It's up to you really, whatever doesn't interfere with your study. Would be great if you could come down though.

Yeah, I was thinking of preparing the oral now, but have no idea what my school is going to be doing with it.. Like, do we choose an issue ourselves or do the teacher choose etc :/
If worse comes to worse, I might just come down just to brainstorm ideas and everything? :)
Sounds great though, thanks EZ & Lex!
-
Put me down as attending =)
I haven't started the speech yet but I think can prepare something decent before that date, probably a good motivator to get started too
-
@Andilo - Yeah, it depends what your school wants to do with it. Mine gave us a collection of articles surrounding the treatment of asylum seekers, and we did language analyses and orals on this. Try contacting a teacher or past student perhaps - I know a lot of schools leave students completely free to choose their own issue.
But otherwise, come along I suppose.
By the way, it was all EZ's idea :)
-
This is bonkers!
-
If anyone else wants to volunteer to help out, feel free to say so! Also, if you don't know how your oral is going to be done, just bring a generic speech (written by you or someone else) and read it! Public speaking skills are useful for life, and not just VCE. =)
-
I'll volunteer to help out if you need more people. As for location, I think just a public park? Or if anyone has the ability to hire those rooms in RMIT it would work.
-
Russ says he might be able to book out a room at Melbourne Uni, which would be awesome. =)
Also, if you have any friends who might be interested, feel free to ask them to come along.
-

What a fantastic idea - you guys are amazing :)
-

Maybe film it and post on YouTube for future students?
If everyone approves of course. Otherwise they could have their orals edited out I guess.
-
Love it. Would also work well to simulate the pressure (even more) of the SAC-proper. I have a video camera but it's a bit hard to connect to my laptop so it'd easier to use another one.
Great that Russ is trying to help us out :)
-
Wow, what an opportunity, haha, since our Oral is somewhat in term 2 or sometime very far, does the topic we choose have to be in the range of National / Global issues, or can it be farfetched and random? ;x
-
Go for far-fetched and random if you wish :) It's an opportunity to speak publicly and there's not much point in us imposing limitations (I think) - whatever you think will help you the most you should do.
-
For those of you who do their oral late in the year and hence don't know the topic maybe you should write a speech on the topic that your school did last year.
-
I can be the dickhead at the back making you laugh to emulate the SAC experience if you want.

Team up?

Haha they'll have no chance. Although, to emulate my school's experience we'll need 5 more guys...and the other 15 have to be playing with their phone.
-
Wouldn't mind helping out except that I'm away from the 28th-30th at Phillip Island.
-
Are people who aren't in year 12 (I'm in year 11) allowed/welcomed to come?

Of course, and you can also give speeches. :)
-

I missed the chance to call them yesterday, they closed early.
I'll call today and ask if I can book for this purpose, I don't think they'll really care because January is pretty empty around uni. Before I can book, you'll need to determine:
Size of group
Names of group members
Time and date room is required
-
What an excellent idea! My school used to give out the topics at orientation week so we could work on the orals over the holidays.. but not this year. If the date isn't changed until later on, I'll just perform my oral from Eng 3&4 this year. :)
-
Updated first message - we're having a limit of 15 people (so about 20 people all up Russ, including lecturers etc.). Time will be 10am, 29th of January. There's also a super special awesome secret mega magical guest lecturer, who you should all come see. =)

Is there a list of people attending? :)
EDIT: Whoops, sorry! Didn't see it

First post!

Tell us more..... ;D
-
If we are Year 11, can we come but not speak? ::)
-
Yep!

mmm, 20 people is going to be quite cosy. I'm teaching at uni next week and I'll check the room size then but the conference room that I'm allowed to book (as a student) isn't exactly boardroom sized.
Oh well, I'll report back on Monday
-
Thanks heaps Russ!

I've booked the ones at Alice Hoy and they are usually available (the big meeting room with glass walls overlooking the courtyard)
-
Oh really? Wasn't aware we could book the Alice Hoy rooms...they'd easily be big enough. Do you know who I book them through? ERC or that desk at the end of the building?
-
For this I contacted P&C. It was free for me since it was for University purposes. I'm not sure if you have to pay in this case because it involves external parties (not affiliated with Unimelb)
Have a look here: http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/venuehire/internal/intbookings.html
Or you could book a room at Baillieu, I think that's free
-
Hey guys,
I've also got a friend who wants to attend, is that okay?
Thanks in advance for running this, looking forward to it =)

All good, and no problem!
-
I'm in.
Shall give me 19 days to get ready
-
Bump, we still have places...
-
Curious, if 20 people are coming , what is the time constraints per speech or minimum that you are looking at :)?
-
I think prepare your whole speech, but if we get too many people we might just cut it off at the 2nd or 3rd minute.
-
Lol alright thanks, count me in RawR! ;)
-
I should be able to come :D
I've also heard a fair bit about you, EZ :P I'd be nice to finally meet you!
-
So I dropped by the Brownless today and checked out the conference room.
It's not large, there are half a dozen chairs and a couple of tables. If you have the speaker at one end of the room you'd be fairly cramped at the other end if you're putting 15 people there. I'm limited to booking it for two consecutive hours but if you split the people into hour 1/hour 2 it's probably easier to fit everyone that way.
Let me know if you want it booked and you have to give me the list I mentioned earlier (ie real names)
-
NEVERMIND, I CAN MAKE IT ON THE 29th :)
-
I can't make it to this either. Sorry! :)
-
Looking to be closer to 10 people, so we can probably just do that.
Can everyone who wants to come pm me their real names, so that I can send the list to Russ?
-
. sec
-
This sounds awesome.
oh and from experience I can tell you that lexitu is amazing at oral...but enough of that he is pretty good at giving speeches too.
-
oh and from experience I can tell you that lexitu is amazing at oral...
Must go see him now
-
Am I thinking what you're thinking taiga?
-
Wait...are you guys serious?
-
Wait...are you guys serious?
;D No, we're just playing around. :P
-
Slight problem, January the 29th is a Saturday and the conference room at uni won't be open. I can book for during the week if you want, if it's possible to change the date (eg friday)
The brownless library will be open and has some smaller group study rooms but you will need student cards to get in (your secret speaker has a card to swipe you in)
Sorry about that, I only found out today, let me know what you want me to do
-
Wait...are you guys serious?
;D No, we're just playing around. :P
No I meant are you serious you didn't pick it up?
sigh...is there a difference between "amazing at oral" and "good at giving speeches".
It's not even funny anymore..
Anyway back on topic: THIS SOUNDS AMAZING AND IF YOU YEAR 12s DON'T GO I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN.

I reckon Russ is the special guest speaker. :P
-
^he isn't, although I wasn't aware he knew who the special guest speaker is. :p

Even I don't know... EZ is being very secretive :)

This should be okay if it is early in the morning - same time. This Friday I can't do though.
And to Blakhitman, I admire your humour mate :)
-
Yep, same time for the 31st!
-
Well when you sent me the list of names, I put two and two together ;P
And I can book Monday the 31st but I'll do it tomorrow, because the hold times are ridiculous right now
-
might have to count me out then... don't think i can make it on the 31st
-
Day after BDO, not sure i can wake up in time
-
Is there anywhere that would work at all for the 29th? We've still got about a week to go, so I guess it's not too late to try... How are those "Smaller Group Study Rooms", Russ?
-
They can't be booked but at 10am on a saturday during summer break you probably won't have much competition. They're reasonably sized, might be tough to get 10 people in there and still have room for the speaker to speak but they're better than nothing.
There are a fair few of them, so you could split in half I guess and have people deliver their speech twice.
-
Might just do that then. Perhaps Lexitu could run one session, and I the other.
-
Yeah, that could work :) We can sort of figure that out on the day, we can improvise if we run into problems.
-
Hey guys, just for saturday, ummm, I have maths tutor at 2pm. so I might have to leave at 1:40pm . Just a heads up, if it doesn't end then <<< Worst case scenario ;x
-
Should easily be done by then :)
-
So you're going ahead with saturday and I shouldn't book the room for the 31st?
If it's saturday I may or may not turn up to swipe you in, so make sure your speaker is there on time or you can't get past the locked door!
-
^Super special speaker might not be able to come anymore - would any student's ID (including year 12 graduates who just enrolled at Melbourne) work?
-
Any nonexpired ID card will work, yes. Just make sure they don't leave it near any magnets :P
If you arrive and you can't get in, you can always call me and I'll come in just to open it for you, I live ~10 minutes by car
-
Ok guys, we're all meeting at the tram stop which runs along the same lines as the trams that go past Melbourne Central/State Library. For those who don't know where this is, take the number 8/16/72/whatever else goes along that particular path, until you see Melbourne University and a massive tram stop. Meet at 9:30am!

You can catch any tram running down swanston and still get to melbourne uni, relax
-
This is so exciting! Im filled with anticipation xD. Lol.....
-
I think it's fair to say it was a success!
Now, can everyone please PM me their name so I can sort through my comments and give you the right one. Also, let me know if you don't want yourself in the video. Should have the video live in a few hours.
-
Thanks to everyone for coming along! I also agree that it was fairly successful - a nice range of speeches, and some healthy community bonding on the whole too!
-
Thanks for organising it all! It was great!
-
Who was the super secret guest speaker thingo and you recorded everyone speaking?
Define video going 'live'? As in - we (non-attenders/y11) can see it?
-
dptjandra but unfortunately he couldn't make it.
Non-attenders will be able to see it which is exciting! It'll be posted to YouTube soon, just have to sort a few things.

We sure will!

Congratulations on your good work and success Lex and EZ :)

We sure will!
I don't think that's a good idea...ATAR seems a bit too eager for it... ;)
-

How'd you get in, someone in there open it?
I woke up this morning with a weird niggling feeling I was forgetting something and then saw the thread and buzzed EZ haha

A variety ranging from the pressing issue of whether apples are better than oranges to not-so-serious issues such as the position of women within the military .

HAHHAA good point!

http://vimeo.com/19322327 - This is where you should look for the video.
It's finished uploading but there is yet another process before it is published. Sorry, this is taking soooo long.
-
All good, we can wait 23 minutes. :P ;)
-
It's up :)

In hindsight, I LOOK SO BAD LOL
-
Three things:
1. kyzoo is Asian?! o.O
2. Water is a guy?! :O
3. EZ, some really helpful tips there!
-
In hindsight, I LOOK SO BAD LOL
I'd say the same thing for myself. But seriously I think everyone amplifies their faults in review. You were good, especially your control of tempo and projection.

But you were still awesome, as expected haha! Btw, never got the chance to ask - how did your uni stuff go?
Thanks! :D I look like such a weirdo at the start.. omg what was I thinking haha!
-
Lex's biceps...
-
Lex, is there any way to cut the video between all the segments? Don't bother if it's a hassle, but I think it might make it easier to navigate the whole thing, since 40 mins is pretty long...
As I said though, you were all awesome! Chillax! 8D
-
oh lol i'm first 0.o
and 0.o i shift my weight around too much LOL
-
Man, I wish I could've gone to this! I'm a public speaker and practice is always good :P

Lol, weirdoness is all part of it but you settled well :) What in particular about uni? I've just had a brief program info session so far where I've had a chance to scan my classmates but that's about it.
