LEADING fashion brands are being made by exploited workers in filthy sweat shops ... here in Melbourne.
An investigation has exposed a network of thousands of outworkers paid less than $2 an hour on average who make garments that adorn rails in our big department stores.

name and shame them. i bet the vic govt and relevant authorities do sweet all about it and all those fashion names in connection with this will deny any knowledge even though they know damn well what is going on.

They did, sort of:
And this week clothes for Portmans, Jacqui-E, Pilgrim, Basque and Hi There were being made in revolting and potentially lethal conditions.

Hardly surprising, considering virtually all modern products are produced in sweatshops.

yeah, but i bet those company say they had no idea when they did, and nothing will change. things will continue to be how they were before the herald sun reported it.

Wow, that kind of does come as a surprise. I don't buy things just because they are Australian made anyway, but it does show that paying more for Australian made doesn't necessarily mean that you are paying that higher price for labour. At least when people are employed in some countries overseas for $2 a day, that would still give them much more spending power than over here where you definitely cannot live on $2 a day.
I assume it works out legally because people in Melbourne are being paid by commission rather than an hourly rate? THe article didn't say.
