I am considering going to either Latrobe, RMIT or Swinburne. However does Swinburne have a bad reputation?

In what respect? (ie courses/atmosphere/lecturers)?

What course are you thinking of doing? What do you expect from the course? What career/future course do you hope to get out of this degree?
All universities have their strengths and weaknesses.

It all really depends what you mean by reputation.
However, they are certainly not bad choices by any measure. I've said it time and time again here but there's not some kind of hidden secret knowledge that the professors at Monash know that the ones at RMIT don't.
Likewise, a lot of it is related to how well you do personally. Someone who had an average of 55 at monash verses someone who had 95 at swinburne, who do you think will be more likely to get the job?
RMIT and La Trobe have some great courses in certain areas as well. I know RMIT is quite good for software development for instance (their program and its benefits in my opinion might even be above monash and the rest).

While it's true that Swimburne do cope quite a fair bit of shit from Melb Uni and Monash students. They're by no means a bad university. I know that Astronomy research in Swinburne is amongst the best, if not the best in Victoria, so it really depends on the course you're after. Also, plenty of good food around glenferrie. (And yes, after a couple of years in Uni, the quality of food available does matter substantially)

I want to do a psychology course, ideally I would like to get into RMIT or Latrobe, for Latrobe the Psych course is 70.1 ATAR I got a 72.50, however it says that you will be guaranteed a place in the course if you received an ATAR of 80 or more. So in saying this I am worried that my ATAR is too low to get into the course. The Psych courses at Swinburne are lower to RMIT or Latrobe.
This is why I am considering it.

The clearly ins jump from year to year, thats probably why they made this guarantee.
Using this (http://www.theage.com.au/national/education/melbourne-arts-is-tops-as-more-students-seek-uni-entry-20121216-2bhm3.html), it only seems to have changed by only about ~.15 each year, so, i wouldn't worry.

Swinburne is great! If you put them on your preference list they give you free earphones!
On another note though, Swinburne does not have a bad reputation ( I mean I am pretty sure It isn't a drug school), a lower reputation in awesomeness but not a BAD reputation. As far as I know Swinburne's rep is pretty much the same as Victoria Universities rep, this is due to them both having low ATAR requirements and therefore puts them underneath Universities like Melbourne and Monash which have pretty high ATAR requirements. Though I have been told that Swinburne have state of the art technology so that a plus! I don't know much else though :-\

how does swinburne rank in terms of atmosphere?
i've never seen the campus?
could anyone give me any insight whether it is a good uni to study mechatronics engineering?

didnt the dude who wrote atarcalc go to swinburne and now he works at facebook?
from people i know who go there and family in the industry for IT sorts of things, and anything space-y/aviation-y swinburne is good. if you want to become a clinical psychologist you have to land an honours year which is so competitive you have no idea LOL so it might help to go to a better uni but if you dont have the atar for it psychology degrees everywhere are the same APAC accredited units so you'll be fine

I haven't heard anything bad about Swinburne at all. Both at my sister's school and my school the teachers have said that Swinburne is one of the best universities to go to for design courses.

I think Swinburne University is a good university.
I am from Europe and I came to do research here.
By a research perspective they are going very well. PhD students have got plenty of possibilities.
You don't have to forget that it was not born a lot of years ago.
Therefore the Uni is trying to going up and up and up
on the other hand old universities as Melbourne university or Monash don't need to look after that much their students as they have already a name
Swinburne's Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing is highly regarded
I have a lot of friends from that department and they are coming from a lot of countries: Canada, US, Hungary, Italy, France, the UK, Germany
so... it must not be that 'bad' don't you think so?
Additionally it is pretty internationally oriented.
It is attracting many relevant professors to carry on building its reputation.
Therefore you might meet very good academics who graduated from good universities but now they are working in Swinburne.

I think Swinburne might offer a lot of different opportunities.
I find a lot of students who are coming for an exchange like people from Denmark, Sweden and Germany for example.
I myself come from a very good university in Europe (within the first 200 in the world)
I chose Swinburne for my PhD :-D
I applied only here and now I have also the opportunity to go overseas for my research.
