Hey everybody!
So with the new ATAR system in QLD, I was wondering if any of you guys are more acquainted with the subject units than I am. Do you know it you must do units 1/2 to do 3/4? Did any of you skip 1/2 and go right ahead with 3/4? Please share your experience if you did, if not, share your knowledge of units here so we can contribute and collaborate our knowledge together! ;)

The new QCE/ATAR system units are based on the ones here in Vic! You don't necessarily have to complete units 1/2 (year 11) to do units 3/4 (year 12), with the exception of English, which you must do both. Most students typically do the 1/2 unit sequences in year 11 and then do the follow-up 3/4 sequences in year 12.
That being said, if you find (for example) that you don't want to do a subject after 1/2, but you find that you want to pick up a different subject for 3/4, you're completely able to! (Although be aware that some subjects might rely on you doing a bit of self-study to catch up on the foundational concepts you have missed!)

To add to the above, sometimes this is at the school's discretion. For example, your school might say that in order to study a subject's Units 3&4, you must have studied Units 1&2.
The most common pathway is to go from Units 1&2 to Units 3&4, but this isn't always the case. For two of my Year 12 subjects, I hadn't completed the Units 1&2 equivalents.
I'd probably recommend doing the 1&2 if you can, though - it usually leads to a great foundation!

Hey! :) just want to add something - here in Victoria you actually only need to do THREE units of any English subjects to be eligible for an ATAR. Two of those must be 3/4, however you can complete just unit one or just unit two. They also do NOT have to be from the same English subject! So for example, I did English unit 2 along with literature units 3 and 4 last year to ensure I would be able to get an ATAR.
You might want to double check to see if it’s the same case in Queensland :) Hope this helped!
