Title: Worried about the GAT
Post by: Unknown-111 on September 23, 2020, 03:04:17 pm
Hey guys I am shitting my pants right now  :'( :'(
I am doing a unit 3/4 subject this year (history) and I have not done a single practice GAT yet. My teacher said the GAT is extremely important and will determine our study score  :( so what can I do now to ensure that I ace the GAT. Also which components of the GAT matter most? I am confused. This holiday I plan to go crazy with practice GATS.

I don't know what's happening this year, but historically, the GAT only comes into play if you don't rock up to your exam/ don't sit your exam due to exceptional circumstances, and therefore, you don't need to take it too seriously. If that's changed for this year, I'm not too sure, maybe someone else would be better positioned to answer that.

I'm a year 12 student, I did the GAT in year 11 also. If you're not doing a maths-science subject, the multichoice things with maths/science probably don't matter as much; however, they all matter. To ensure you ace the GAT, I advise reduction of stress and plenty of good nutrition/sleep. The GAT - this year - is supposed to be used as a moderation tool; my teachers say it is probably going to boost marks or leave them unchanged. I'm not sure, but personally, I'm not going to be doing much practising the GAT: and I with four subjects to do, in year 12. My teachers do say that the best way to prepare is not to practise the GAT so much as to relax, unwind and get plenty of sleep, etc. So don't be too terrified; it won't make a major negative difference, anyhow.

I am not doing a unit 3/4 math or science this year, but please note that I AM DOING BIO, CHEM AND METHODS IN YEAR 11 CURRENTLY . But thank you for your advice, I really got stressed out because my teacher told me how important the GAT is and that I should do plenty of practice GATS.

What you get on the GAT this year will not affect your maths/science subjects. So next year yes, you'll need to do it, and yes you want to do well in it, but ultimately, the GAT doesn't matter too much, and this year, the maths/science part, for you, isn't such a big deal. :)
I don't plan, personally, to do a practise GAT - I've skimmed through the 2018 GAT, but didn't sit down and do it, don't plan to. I am aware that you may not choose to do it this way - but don't feel obligated to do many practise GATs. :)

Thanks for your contribution. Can you tell me what was your scores on the GAT? What is considered a good score?

I don't think anyone can really say what is a good score since it depends on the students aims. If students would like 30+ study scores for their vce subjects scores, getting over 30 in each GAT section would be good for them. Whereas if someone is aiming for 45+ scores in their vce subjects getting 30's in each GAT section wouldn't be good.

I can't recall my scores right now, but I did get 30+ on all sections, once scaled - I did put them in the GAT results thread from last year, only my contribution is I think one of the last ones, if you want to look it up.
As far as a 'good' score goes, I agree with Sine.

hey there! all I can say is seriously don't stress about the gat! It can never pull your study score down, it can only boost it. I did barely any practice for my gat last year (I was in year 11 and doing biology 3/4) and still ended up with a good ss. If you had to prioritize your time, I defs would be putting exam prep for history 3/4 wayy higher than the gat. If you wanted some comfort, I did so bad in mine last year, I think I got like a raw 15 in humanities (but it didn't matter cos I didn't have a humanities subject  lol). Just do your absolute best, and try not to stress out about it. you can't really study for it anyway, (except the writing components). The memes afterwards are totally worth it though :)

I back what emonerd said. There's no point stressing about it (i did no revision for it) and if you want some comfort that you can still achieve a high study score with less than stellar GAT results, here are my results from last year when i did the GAT as a year 11 (extremely bad i know but cracked it and started guessing all the multiple choices :P). Although take this with a grain of salt that this year the GAT may be weighted differently.

Hey, I second this ! I legit was so ill during my GAT last year, slept thru it, and ended up with a 45+ ss in bio last year. Just stay calm, if u want to do prep I recommend just looking over common question types, and revising what each writing task wants from you.

Is skipping the GAT possible? What if you miss it?

"skipping" the GAT is technically possible........ - just don't show up.

In saying that, I would STRONGLY recommend at the very minimum attending and trying your best. The emphasis of the GAT is actually higher this year due to COVID - most internal SACs have been conducted remotely with minimal room for genuine authentication of student work.

If you miss it due to illness etc. then that clearly cannot be helped and i'm sure VCAA will have in place the proper special consideration processes.

^^^

Yeah you have absolutely nothing to lose by at least showing up and trying your best. Like Aaron said it will be weighted more significantly this year as it will be used to moderate the SAC scores

Luckily the GAT is a general ability test where you don't need any prep for, with the added bonus of seeing your friends for the first time in a long time.

Best of luck!
