Alright.
I have an ongoing disagreement with a colleague about this.
How do you use emoji? Do things like ":P" and the like sort of function in a way that replaces punctuation, or are they simply in addition?

If it's at the end of a message and it's just a smiley it can go after punctuation, otherwise it replaces it.

I use it to replace punctuation. Whenever I send out emails or I'm giving my students feedback for their responses and I don't want it to come off as being too serious or for the tone to be misread, I use exclamation marks to show I'm happy or enthusiastic about something. When those exclamation marks become excessive, I replace some of them with smiley emojis. I feel that having the punctuation mark AND the emoji is redundant. I really am interested in hearing the other side of the argument though :)

I think this is where I stand:
- can go after punctuation at the end of a paragraph
- in a stand alone sentence replaces punctuation
- otherwise goes before punctuation

I 100% agree with this; I do the same thing with messages so it doesn't come across too serious etc. But I do sometimes put the emoji after the full stop on the forums, which I had never noticed until now ;D

I do this as well as I feel putting it before punctuation makes it look weird and putting it after punctuation kind of stops the flow and looks passive aggressive ;D

I usually either use to replace or after punctuation (so answer to this is.. mixed).
I also see the use & frequency of emojis as important - spamming emojis in any sort of text can often be perceived as quite annoying and diminishes any positive effect it is intended to have.
I think a good comparison is word documents and the use (or overuse) of different colours, fonts, etc.
Just my opinion on it anyway.

I think with texts/messages most people don't put a full stop even without an emoji. On the forums, users are a bit more formal with punctuation and for the most part users will not have a full stop before/after an emoji

I most often use it as a replacement for punctuation :) It's friendlier than full stops, which can be pretty harsh sometimes, and breaks up an over-the-top string of exclamation marks, which is my other way of being friendly!
Situations where I use it after punctuation:
a) When trying to remain fairly formal, but still friendly. More likely a workplace situation. :)
b) When I'm really excited about something and an exclamation mark just doesn't cut it! ;D
c) When I'm talking with those wonderful people who put the emoji before punctuation. (: *

Personally I would go with closer to, ignore the rules of punctuation if using emoticons. In general, just don't use them on actual things where punctuation matters. :)
I use a full stop before emoticons. :)

I like being able to use emojis in semi-formal writing like emails because they're convenient as succinct tone and formality modifiers. That being said, I certainly wouldn't include them in highly formal writing.
