I keep noticing that everyone younger than me seems to use instagram or snapchat to communicate with others, whereas everyone my age and above seems to communicate via fb messenger. My year level seems to feel like the exact cut off for the last age group before instagram takes over as the 'important' way of staying in touch with friends.
I pretty much only got snapchat to talk to a couple of friends from the year level below. And I rarely use instagram DMs unless I'm talking to younger friends. Everyone my age and older I talk to via messenger.
Another thing that supported my theory was that I went to a uni thing for psych students, and was talking to some first years who went straight to Instagram when they brought up connecting on social media, and said they don't really use fb/messenger except for when they have to for uni stuff etc. Whereas others I've connected with on social media from uni in my year level+ go straight to bringing up Facebook.
There are a lot of exceptions obviously, but I definitely feel like at some point around people in the age group a little below mine, instagram overtakes facebook messenger in popularity by a large amount. Especially by my brothers year level (a few years younger), it seems like they only seem to use instagram DMs to communicate (instead of fb messenger).
Do you guys think there's a reason for this, or is it just kind of what's happened?
Is there anyone who feels like my experience of different social medias for different age groups is different to their experience/thoughts on this?

FB / Messenger the most. Have been using it since 2010 I reckon so it's by far my most familiar app. Instagram 2nd. LinkedIn 3rd.
Never been interested in Snapchat. My students just look at me when I say I use fb, it's like a foreign concept.

I mainly use Facebook and Messenger. I think it's just convenient to be able to text on Messenger if you have no reception but have internet and Facebook is good for keeping up with friends as you progress through life.
LinkedIn would definitely come 2nd
At university, I'm now finding that the Information Technology units/ students/ teachers are all using Discord to communicate

I 100% agree that younger years are using Instagram, even in Year 12 last year, a lot of people were mainly using Instagram some using Facebook though. I think it's just one of those passing things, one-day people might be using another network/ app, so Instagram might look older in the future. Kind of like what happened to 'MySpace'.

I thought snapchat was dead :/
Personally, I mainly use messenger and occasionally ig DMs (however, most of the people I talk to on ig I also talk to on messenger).
I don't really post on social media but In terms social media usage for things that are not messaging I probably use Twitter the most right now. A few years ago it would've been Instagram but it has gone downhill a lot in the past few years. I think Facebook (in terms of posting stuff) is kinda done for anyone who is under 30.

I use FB and messenger the most, but I think that's just by virtue of me not having anything else - when I first got social media I also had insta but that took up too much time + seemed a bit redundant, so I deleted it. Whatsapp seemed like a mum thing so I never got it, and snapchat was always a little sus for me, so I also never had that. Discord is more for faculty societies that have a discord server, and mostly for a few extra features when dm'ing. I think everyone around the same age as me sorta has a bit of everything, though :/

On a discord chat the other day I got called old for saying I use messenger lmao. I made my fb account in 2012 ._.

Evaluating my own habits, it goes
Messenger followed by insta and discord, then snapchat and LinkedIn kinda tied.
I refuse to get on tiktok lmao 😂
