Title: Why is Engineering NEVER mentioned as an Atar Subject?
Post by: GreenNinja on October 01, 2021, 08:15:52 am
So I am in grade 10, about to go to 11 (queensland)
I have selected Methods, Chem, Physics, Specalist, General English & Engineering.
I hope to make all my subjects other than English go towards atar.
While looking for resources in my preparation for senior schooling, I found an abundant number of resources for my sciences, english and maths. However, I did not find a single resource for Engineering. The Atar Notes, dosen't even mention of a subject called engineering even though they have subjects like food studies and design???
Enginering, I found out recently, was actually a commonly chosen subject in my school grade (the spaces filled out), but I haven't heard of a single past student selecting it???
There aren't even u1 &2 or 3&4 Engineering textbooks in queensland. :(

EDIT: Has enyone here completed engineering for ATAR? If so, how difficult is it in comparison to... lets say bio?
I looked on the ATARNotes atar cal, and Engineering acutually scales higher than Biology  ::)
But still I am reluctant to select engineering because of there not being study resources. I might have to go for bio :(
<- cause I am hoping to go for medicine

I’ll be honest that I don’t know much about QCE at all, but figured I’d reply anyway. (I’m Victorian.)

The Atar Notes, dosen't even mention of a subject called engineering even though they have subjects like food studies and design???
ATARNotes was originally a Victorian forum and the QCE sections of the forum were only really expanded upon when Queensland changed from the OP system to the current ATAR system about 2-3 years ago. My guess is that a lot of these boards were copied across from VCE, which has a similar set of subjects and syllabi to QCE, but Engineering is not a subject you can do in VCE so it wasn’t a board that was made. We could add this board in the future, however, it might take a while as the forum has a number of projects underway already. I’ll definitely let someone higher up know though!

There aren't even u1 &2 or 3&4 Engineering textbooks in queensland. :(
Not all subjects have textbooks and it’s usually the case when subejcts have a more practical side to them or are very open-ended subjects. In these cases, have a look at the syllabus for Engineering; it’ll have the details of what you’ll study and may indicate that there is/ isn’t a textbook.

Enginering, I found out recently, was actually a commonly chosen subject in my school grade (the spaces filled out), but I haven't heard of a single past student selecting it???
There’s likely an explanation behind this. For example, in Victoria, these are common reasons why you wouldn’t see a subject appear much:
- it could be offered by only a few schools and yours just happens to be one.
- it might be a new-ish subject so not many students take it.
- it may simply have a very small cohort so few students take it.

Hope that helps! :)

Hey!

I've just made a QCE Engineering board now. It doesn't have anything in there yet, but if you can think of any resources or discussion threads that would be useful there's now a place to add them.

Thanks Techy for raising this and AW for highlighting it :)
