Title: bw304's vce journey!
Post by: bw304 on January 18, 2022, 04:53:41 pm
hi all!

i've been finding these vce journals super interesting, so i thought i would make my own! it will mainly consist of me talking to myself, but i think it will be super cool to look back on in future. for a little background:

- i am starting yr12 in exactly one fortnight (eek)
- i'm taking english, methods, spesh, bio and chem
- i completed psych last year
- i enjoy sport, guitar, and hanging out with friends
- i'm looking to enter the medicine pathway following graduation
- i'm aiming for around a 95+ atar (would love to hit around a 99ish for undergrad med but i think i'd die in the process)

since school is starting so soon, i thought i'd share how I've been preparing for each subject
english
probably the subject I've done the least for (oops). i've just read and annotated the selected short stories from 'like a house on fire' which we are studying in the creative unit. i'm still yet to complete some guided questions for these, as well as read 'pride and prejudice' for text response. I'm probs gonna have to listen to the 10hr audiobook in 2x speed if i wanna get through it in time lol. i'm also thinking of creating a theme bank for (hopefully) both of these novels that i can add to as the term progresses!
methods
methods has been a lot of revision work tbh. i've completed the set chapter work and assignments for two topics, so now i'm just skimming through some of the edrolo videos to make sure i've got my head wrapped around everything!
spesh
similar to methods - i've done the chapter work and assignments so just looking through edrolo. i'm thinking i'll watch further ahead in spesh (compared to methods) because i do find the subject a bit more difficult so i definitely want to feel prepared when school starts back
chem
i've completed the set edrolo videos and questions and also gone a bit further ahead so i'm familiar with the content being taught in week 1/2. i think i'm gonna do some checkpoints questions to consolidate everything and just try to stay at least a couple chapters ahead throughout the year
bio
same as chem - i've completed the set edrolo and a few extra chapters too. i think i'll do some checkpoint q's and maybe rewatch some of the previous videos because there really is a fair bit of content that i need to understand (love/hate relationship with bio rn)

that's basically it! i'm honestly pretty excited for yr12 and really want to make the most of it... i'll probably post weekly/fortnightly depending on how busy things are!

Hey bw304! Great to see another VCE Journal!
english
probably the subject I've done the least for (oops). i've just read and annotated the selected short stories from 'like a house on fire' which we are studying in the creative unit. i'm still yet to complete some guided questions for these, as well as read 'pride and prejudice' for text response. Omg I am doing Like a House on Fire too. What do you think of it?? A lot of my friends hate it but tbh I secretly like it  :-\
I'm ngl kind of excited to do the creative unit, although I have the SAC in week 1 so that's not great  >:(

We are doing pretty similar subjects this year, I'm doing english, methods, spesh, chem and french. Have you had a look at the AN lectures so far for chem and methods? They have been so good for me, and I'm going to watch the english one tomorrow.

Can't wait to hear more from you!

hi lemur!
Omg I am doing Like a House on Fire too. What do you think of it??

i actually don't mind it either! i think the stories can appear a little bland at first because Kennedy tends to cover more common, everyday issues. but honestly once i get through a couple pages I'm already sucked in lol, especially once you notice all the little symbols throughout the stories!

your sac is pretty early too omg, mines around week 3 i think - good luck!!

Have you had a look at the AN lectures so far for chem and methods?

i haven't really looked into the lectures as of yet... i might do so if you've found it helpful! thanks for the suggestion!!

best wishes,

hey everyone!

it's been about a week since my first post so i thought I'd give an update on how things are tracking along! to be honest, I've been so busy with random things the past few days, and as a result, have gotten barely any work done. so yes, i am starting to feel the pressure.

it only just hit me the other day how close yr 12 is (one week!), as well as how quickly not only these school holidays, but the entirety of my high school journey, has gone. i think I'm starting to have those general apprehensions about the school year - am i prepared enough? have i done all the homework? will i manage my workload? am i studying effectively? and blah blah. I'm trying not to overthink things because back-to-school nerves are completely normal!

in terms of my individual subjects, there has been slight progress:
english: i completed the guided questions which i found were a good writing exercise. I've read 4 out of like 60 chapters in pride and prejudice, so I'm about 1/15th of the way there lol  :'(
all my other subjects: still watching edrolo... i haven't even touched checkpoints yet

my main dilemma at the moment is how i want to structure my notes for chem. over the holidays, i have been handwriting (relatively brief) notes from the edrolo slides as i watch the videos. at my school they also provide us with notes for each chapter which are used to teach the class. I'm planning to annotate these notes then transfer any key points i missed from edrolo into my book. my main concern is that this could be a waste of time? I've heard a lot of people say that they don't write notes in chem, but i find notetaking provides me with a foundation of knowledge that is helpful when i complete practice questions. (if anyone has an opinion on this small issue, feedback would be greatly appreciated)

anyways... i guess the rest of my week is going to be dedicated to completing the last few bits of homework and some general school prep (uniform, stationary, fixing my sleep routine etc.)
good luck to anyone who is also going back to school in the coming days!

term one, week one
i've been back at school for a couple days now, and so far things are going pretty good! there has been some ~conflict~ between people in my year level, which is annoying because it is such a distraction... why must people be petty lol.

besides that, my classes have run pretty smoothly! all of my teachers are great and so are majority of the people in my classes. i really like the extra freedom you get in yr12, in that i am pretty much responsible for my own learning and how i approach it.

my first sac is for english in two weeks from now. it is definitely approaching fast but seeing as how i have only 3 or so sacs this term, i'll manage.

at the moment i'm just trying to get back into a routine. i've somehow coped pretty well with waking up at 6.30 instead of 11 lol. the days have felt suuuper long though, and i'm lowkey exhausted by lunchtime. so yeah, my study habits are a bit jumbled at the moment oops

anyways, that's my brief update. i hope people have enjoyed their first days back !

I had a bit of giggle here.

My teachers are pre nice too. My chem teacher is like a mother hen, she gives you tough love when you need it but is also very gentle at times. I always give her a cheeky smile when she asks who needs a worksheet because I've lost it .   8) ;D

My maths teacher is also pre cool. He still hasn't recovered from his sunburn that happened 3 weeks ago, despite using sunscreen 3 times that day. 😂

He tells me to stop abusing him, but idk what that means🤭

Its really good to hear that you've had a good week so far!

my spesh teacher is like this too! i start to question whether i actually enjoy the subject or just like having him as a teacher haha

term one, week two
this was my first full week of classes, and it was definitely full on. i kinda felt that no matter how much study and homework i did each night, i was still behind in my classes.

my main focus has been english, as my sac is in less than a week. i just got the official prompts earlier today, so i'm hoping i can prepare for this task relatively well.

on another note... i am already behind in spesh. i had a double period on Thursday and we covered A LOT of content... guess i know what i'll be doing this weekend haha.

all my other subjects have been pretty chill though. i do have a sac for chem in under two weeks, but I've just about finished the content that is being tested so i'm gonna start some practise questions now.

next week i have a (compulsory) meeting with the careers coordinator to talk about unis, etc.. basically, we have to give her our yr 11 semester 2 exam results and we get an atar prediction based off those scores... which is very inaccurate. so many students have been told they'll get a raw 50 in methods... definitely questionable  ;)

anyways, that's my lil update!

term one, week three

hi everyone!
this week was superrrr hectic so i'm gonna break it down into subjects

english: i did my sac and i'm so relieved now omg. i was able to memorise my draft word for word surprisingly so i'm pretty happy with what i submitted. i'm really hoping for 25+/30 but my school marks english pretty harsh so we'll see  :-\ this weekend i have to read the second half of pride and prejudice... yes, I've been putting it off for a month now...

methods: i'm lowkey finding methods really tedious at the moment. idk if it's because we go a little slow in class (love my teacher, although she did chase me down the hallway bc i had two pairs of earrings in...). i'm thinking of getting ahead in the chapter work or something, because i've literally been doing nothing in class

spec: spec is pretty chill atm. we just started circular functions this week which was a breath of fresh air... it felt like we had been learning vectors since term 4 last year haha

chem: we had our prac this week and it was definitely questionable... the mass of our spirit burner increased by 20g after combustion??? it was a bit concerning. anyways, the write up/SAC thingo is on Wednesday and i'm a little nervous because no one in my class has been given any indication of what type of questions there will be. i'm just gonna do a heap of practise SACs this weekend and hope for the best.

bio: bio has been pretty good... i literally have the best teacher. i feel like we're going through content at a good speed. i have a SAC coming up early in week 6 (last one for the term...) so once chem is done that will be my main focus.

well, that's it from me! hope everyone enjoyed their week :)

Good luck on your SAC! Remember to tell us how it went afterwards.

I have so many sacs for the last two weeks of term. I hate it when teachers do that. 😣

I second this! Good luck! It sounds like you’re doing good prep so keep it up and you’ll be fine. You got this :))

lil update
i had my much anticipated chem sac today, and i am so happy to get it over and done with. i felt like i had to avoid so many chem students today because everyone was fully stressing out lol  :P
it was a short one (almost didn't finish), but overall i feel pretty okay with how it went! there's one question i know i messed up but it should only cost me a mark or two... hopefully there's not much more i got wrong. i'm hoping for a 30+/35 so i'll see how that goes...

my last sac for the term is in just under a fortnight for bio so i'm just gonna focus on that now!
once my term 1 sacs are done i'm gonna try and get properly ahead in my subjects because next term is hectic. I've been describing majority of term 1 as hectic but I've added the red for term 2 because i'm not even exaggerating at this point... it's gonna be full on.
i'll have about 8 sacs, including the big methods and spec tasks. i think the GAT is in term 2 as well?? plus i'll be doing 1-2 schools sports plus a sport outside of school. busy times  ;D
anyways, i'll keep this message short and sweet...
i hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week!

term one, week 4
hi all!
the past week wasn't too busy, i had my chem sac and that's it...
although I've only had two sacs so far, i'm already dying to get my marks back. it's frustrating because i know that won't be happening for a little while. especially not for english  :'(
next week should (hopefully) be pretty chill as i haven't got anything on. i'm gonna spend most of my time doing bio study...
i'm hoping i'll have enough resources to do so. since there's a new study design this year, there aren't as many ~valid~ practise tests available. at least i finally got checkpoints!
anyways, i'm running out of things to talk about atm...
hope everyone enjoys the last 1.5 hours of their weekend  :-*

term one, week 5/6
hi guys!
i completely forgot to do an update last week so i'll try my best to remember what's been happening  ;D
this week i had my bio sac (last one for the term!), and i feel kind of good about it??  i think i knew what i was doing but there is still a ~looming~ sense of doubt.
i also got back my chemistry mark today and i'm mostly happy (32/35). i'm a bit annoyed about the little mistakes i made but overall did better than hoped/expected so i guess that's all that matters really!
i'm still waiting on my english mark so i hopefully i find that out soon...
for the rest of the term, i think i'm gonna dedicate small blocks of study for 2ish subjects each night, so i can start getting ahead for next term while also revising previous content.
other than that, not much has really happened, so i guess i'll end it here.
hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week!

term one, week 7
hello all! happy friday  8)
i can't believe it's the end of week 7 already?? i just blinked and now it's suddenly mid-march...
things weren't very busy again this week. i've just been chugging along i guess! i'm gonna do a recap for each of my subjects because i haven't done so in a while!

english
i got my english mark back (28/30) and i'm very happy with it! i tend to feel a bit demotivated in english, compared to other subjects at least, so this first sac mark is definitely encouraging me too keep pushing through.
methods
i got 94 on my methods test which was nice too. i have the application sac next term and i feel like i ~could~ start some proper revision but there aren't many resources available on my school page. i don't want do all the practise sacs too early and then not have anything to work with for next term!
spesh
not much has happened tbh... we're starting differentiation soon which means i'll be doing calculus in both methods and spesh. i mean... who doesn't love doing calculus every day for months?   ;)
chem
i made a rookie error and forgot to check the outline before getting ahead on the next topic. so i did about 5 chapters of content that isn't being covered until next term. whoops. luckily i realised in time to do some work on the correct chapters...
bio
nothing much has happened in bio either... we've been doing photosynthesis for a little which is fun

anyways, that's my kinda boring recount
hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Yes WHAT is with that??? They say Y12 is a marathon but what is this???

english

Wohooooooo!! Nice one! I also tend to feel demotivated in english lol, even though it's pretty much the most important subject because it has to be top 4...

spesh
not much has happened tbh... we're starting differentiation soon which means i'll be doing calculus in both methods and spesh. i mean... who doesn't love doing calculus every day for months?   ;)

Omg we just started calculus in spesh and I actually love it (mostly because we haven't got to the hard stuff yet  ;D) but yeah I think it'll be good to have done it in both spesh and methods.

As for chem at least you've done some extra, right..? Totally one step ahead.

Have a good weekend!

term 1, week 8
hello everyone! hope you've had a good week.
i have a love-hate relationship with literally everything at the moment. my mood has been allll over the place...
i wake up in the morning; it's dark and the weather is getting colder. love it because it feels cosy, but hate it because i have to get out of bed. i'm excited to go to class, but then the bell rings and i'm walking around like a slug because i realise i can't be bothered doing anything  :P.
methods is especially irritating me at the moment. it's like this unwanted presence on my timetable that just sits there like a parasite. the content is fine, mainly because it's literally a repeat from last year. it's the questions that are the actual bane of my existence. why are they SO repetitive??? i think i'm gonna try and get an entire topic ahead before the holidays, just so i can lowkey forget about it for a while (oops).
idk, this was a bit of a rant. i realised the other day that this term has been one of the longest periods that we've been at school in person since covid started. i'm very grateful for that to be the case, however it does explain why everyone is beyond tired at the moment. i'm just counting down the days until classes end!

anyways, i hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

term 1, week 9
this week was once again very chill. i'm so so tired at the moment and just want this next week of classes done so i can make up for this term's lost sleep. i got my bio mark back today (37/40) and overall i'm very happy! i think the questions i lost marks on will actually be good indicators for which areas need improvement as i move into my next sacs. sometimes when i lose marks for silly things i feel like i don't really learn from my mistakes. instead i just get frustrated lolll.
that's all i really have to say i guess. i'm struggling to keep my eyes open as i write this, so sorry if it makes no sense.
enjoy the rest of your week everyone!  :-*

term one, holidays
hi all! i hope everybody is enjoying their break thus far :)
i can't believe i've already been on holidays for a week... i feel like I've been busy but also done nothing at the same time - anyone else?

if i'm being honest, I've found these holidays to be a tad stressful. my entire routine has gone out of wack, and not feeling the pressure of my school timetable just makes me 10x lazier. I've been letting myself sleep in, because this term really tired me out and i need to relax. but at the same time, waking up at 9/10 rather than 6/7 just makes me feel even more sleepy. then it takes me so much longer to actually get out of bed and start the day...

as a result I've been getting very little work done, which i think is understandable because if i went full work grind these holidays i'd be burnt out before term 2 even started. i'm honestly pretty content with just doing little tasks each day, but a small voice in the back of head refuses to switch off with the rest of my body. whenever i have a day that feels unproductive i find myself thinking that i won't get my work done in time, i'm gonna mess up my next sacs and fail vce, blah blah blah. which is very dumb.

so what I've been doing to combat my stress is to question these types of thoughts. what makes me think i won't get my work done? i can't remember a specific time where I've had important tasks overdue... and how is one unproductive day going to affect my overall score? taking days off is going to benefit me in the long run...

i think for the rest of the holidays i might take a slightly different approach towards my homework. i'm planning on blocking out certain days when i have nothing on and using that time to focus on just one subject to get it out of the way. I've just finished off my maths work, so i'm thinking i might get bio done tomorrow, chemistry done early next week, and English done late next week (yes i'm procrastinating english as per usual.)

generally i tend to break down my tasks more and complete smaller activities for at least three subjects each night, but this seems to work better during school time rather than on holidays...

anyways, that's all i have for today... i hope everyone enjoys the remainder of their holidays and has a happy easter if celebrating it!

term 2, weeks 1-5
soo it's been a while since I've posted an update... oops. i think I've just been really focussed on staying organised and ahead this term that i haven't really had time to sit down and reflect so far.
i was expecting this term to be overwhelmingly busy, since i have triple the amount of sacs compared to t1, but it honestly hasn't been that bad. by the end of this week i will be halfway with this term's sacs, which is kinda crazy because i feel like i've barely been back at school yet. ugh this year is going so fast.
a recap on my sacs so far:
- eng text response: i barely finished... i didn't even get to read over my work. the questions were just meh and my motivation levels for eng were literally in the ground. i'm hoping for a 25+/30 or so help me god. we've started analysing now which i definitely prefer so i'm feeling alright about it now.
- bio sac: it was a bit harder than the last one but still relatively straightforward. there were a few strange questions but i think that's typical of bio. i'm hoping for like a 35/40. just excited to do the research investigation now because its so much more chill.
- chem sac: it was pretty tricky ngl, but i think everyone found it hard. it was about 30 marks in 50 minutes, so i was honestly expecting it to be short... i was wrong. the questions that should be worth 2-3 marks were all one markers and it ended being 6 or 7 pages long  :-[ i'd love to get around 90% (i cant remember the amount of marks) but im probably looking more around low 80s? idk
i've got methods this week. 2x2 hour blocks 2 days in a row. i think i might combust.
anyways that's all from me, i hope everyone's term is going good so far!

 term 3, week 1
okay... i've become very slack with keeping this journal up to date... oops. i feel like i go through phases where all i wanna do is write down every minor moment of my life, and other times i just can't be bothered. some non-school related things I've done recently include making a new music playlist (very monumental thing for me as i have very specific taste), developed an iced matcha latte addiction, purchased more notebooks that will remain blank for a very long period of time, cleaned out my desk and drawers, and bought A LOT of craft items like cross stitching kits and gem art lmao.

my goals for this term are:
- to give myself an hour of screen free/leisure time each night before i go to bed (kind of have been doing this but got slack)
- go to bed at a decent time (again slack)
- begin some kind of exam prep
- study for sacs 2/3 weeks out

now onto my specific subjects:

english
so i got 27/30 on my text response which i am extremely relieved about. i still haven't gotten a rubric back yet or anything so idk what to work on lol. I've done both my analysing arguments and oral sac but haven't got either back... i feel good (?) about both i think. we've started comparative now and i'm already crippling. it's my least favourite area but a lot of people are in the same boat ig
bio
bio just treats me right idk. like I've never had a rage over the subject so it's a blessing. i got 39/40 on my last sac which was kinda of a shock but definitely pretty motivating for me. i'm enjoying the responding to pathogens unit too... it's a bit to take in but since i actually like the content it makes it a lot easier to process
chem
chem is love-hate as per usual. I've got 31/35 and 37/40 on my last sacs which was okay with but i just don't know how to improve in chem atm. i feel like i haven't been progressing lately. idk? i don't mind the organic chemistry stuff; i think i'm getting the hang of it now. it just irritates me sometimes lmao
methods
methods is good atm. we're doing integration which I've just finished in spesh so it's a good recap and makes it easy to get ahead. I've also had a look through the probability/statistics unit and i don't mind some of it thank god. i got 99% on my u3 sac which again was a shock but very glad about
spec
spec is nice as usual. i'm feeling a bit nervous because we're beginning kinematics/mechanics which was definitely my weak area last year and caused more than one mental breakdown. so i will brace myself. i got 91% on my u3 sac which i was genuinely so happy with lol. my marks last year for spec were very inconsistent and not what i was aiming for so to hit a 90 was extremely rewarding!

this term is definitely going to be a big one but i can't believe how quickly the year has gone! it's quite nerve-racking to think this is our last full term after more than a decade of school. while it's definitely scary, i'm also very excited to start uni next year.

speaking of unis... I've decided i don't wanna do direct entry med. i was signed up for the ucat and everything but I've since withdrawn and glad i did so. i could already tell the pressure of direct entry wasn't going to be beneficial for me at this point in time due to a number of reasons and also felt that a broader degree of biomed or even science might be better for me. i just want to be entirely sure that med is what i wanna do. i feel so much better after making the decision - all i need is an 85 and i'll be able to get into at least one of the degrees i'm aiming for

anyways... i hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and has had a smooth start to term 3. best of luck to everyone!

I resonate with this so much!! Congrats on some amazing SAC scores, if you need some advice on the post-grad med route or other pathways in healthcare, feel free to send me a pm I'd be happy to share my experience/journey (as well insights from my peers) about this!

All the best,
