Has anybody on here done it before? Is it interesting? What does it mainly comprise of? :S I see its under the mathematical sciences, is it very math orientated??

yes i did atm1030 and 1020... highly recommended... but thats cause i liked how the lecturer taught the subject. but yeah i was interested in how we get weather and how it all works from the start so eh. yeah its very i would say physics based.

well ill just list what the topics are for atm1030 from last year- weather

-cloud classification
-properties of the atmosphere
-energy
-pressure
-rotation
-wind
-thermodynamics
-cloud microphysics
-air masses& fronts
-ocean swells & tsunamis
-mid latitude weather patterns
-numerical weather predictions
-lightning& thunderstorms & tornadoes
-tropical cyclones
-local circulations

and the tutes were
-contours and maps
-satellite and radar imagery
-mean sea level pressure charts
and labs
-synoptic analysis
-clouds and rain

yeah so that was just atm1030, if u wanna know atm1020 then let me know

People I have met that have done it have almost always enjoyed it :)

I personally do not know much but I would assume they keep it light on maths until the 2nd year, based on how all other uni subjects work :P

-radiative equilibrium with an atmosphere
-atmospheric circulation
-ocean circulation
-current climate patterns
-modelling the atmosphere-ocean system
-carbon cycle

Ahhh awesome that's helped a heap!
I've put down ATM1030 for semester one. I don't know why but it appeals to me more than the climate unit, I was going to do both but I want to give Astronomy a go as well. :P

Hmm, which of the two units did you enjoy more?

i liked atm1030 first semester more than the second... i dunno more interested in weather rather than climate, and like climate million of years ago...i like to know about the present rather than the past in regards to weather... lol atm1020 is good too like u learn bout el nino and all that, ocean circulation was pretty cool but eh atm1030 was better i reckon... do astronomy in second if u want or if it doesn't have prereq but that didn't interest me, might interest u though.... but anyway first start the class and uni! lol  oh u might get a different lecturer as well mmm which would suck cause lyle was real good ...

i've put down both the atmospheric science units for semester 1 and 2.
to major in ATM, you need to hit the maths subjects pretty hard yeah? take a look at some of the pre-requesites for the 2nd/3rd year ATM units.

that means i'd also need: MTH1020 and MTH1010
although i dont think i'd actually need to do MTH1010, but its a pre-req for MTH1020. are uni pre-reqs 100% must dos? or can you get around them.
ie: i'm pretty OK at maths, and have done the methods course, but dropped it right towards the end of year 12. will i be able to talk my way into a unit that requires methods? or no-way-jose

yes uni pre-reqs are a must do
ah haha yeah so much maths, but then if you want to do a major in atmospheric science then u have to do it.... u need MTH1010 or VCE maths methods 3&4 avg C in exams... if you didn't complete 3&4 methods i would say there is a very or no chance of talking urself into it because science faculty ppl are stingy lolz. so yeah... u have to do MTH1020 or vce specialist maths to do MTH1030 lolz ... but u dont have to do all of those subjects in first year, u can spread them across the three years if u want or second yr... they just have to be done...

Uni prereqs are *not* must dos. I personally have completed a unit I did not meet the prereqs for at the time. You need to get someone from that school to approve it and voila. Of course its very circumstantial as to how important the prereq is, if you plan on actually doing the prereq at some stage, your capacity to do well etc. The people in the science advanced/science scholar programs avoid prereqs all the time :P

However you would pretty much need to do MTH1010 if you want to do MTH1020. If you really want to do maths then you could probably ask and be able to do both of them in semester 1 to catch up, but otherwise I don't forsee yourself escaping that one.

the thing is, i dont need to do MTH1010.. because i have actually done Methods units1/2/3/4.. i just dont have a study score to prove it. thus doing MTH1010.. 'an intro to algebra basically' is useless. so im assuming once i speak to a course adviser or something, i'd be fine to get into MTH1020.

also guys.. i dont understand how you can fit in all these subjects???
at the moment, my unit selectiion is:
Semester1
- the compulsary Environment subject
- Easy chem (course requirement)
- whatever math subject i do.. probably SCI1020  (course recommendation)
- ATM1010

Sem2
- the compulsary Environment subject
- Biology (course requirement)
- ESC1022.. a geoscience unit
- ATM 1020

where do you get the room to do all these other units, and meet prerequisites?? it just seems that theres [==================] that many things you have to do, and [=======] that amount of space to do them

Talk to someone when you enrol (if you havent already, if you have call up the faculty to organise a time to come talk to someone). I can't say whether it will be fine or not but go see.

I think you're a bit confused about what you need to fit in. See http://www.sci.monash.edu.au/undergrad/progamstudy/pleorthree.html You need to have a maths subject out of whatever's listed, and then go for option 1. It's simply picking 3 sequences so people don't go mental and do one of everything and then realise they don't actually meet prereqs for any 2nd year unit. Don't worry about that physical earth life science crap. You just need to essentially choose 3 subjects, and make sure you meet the maths requirement as well
(doing MTH1020 in 1st and then MTH1030 in 2nd semester will cover the maths requirement)

You can even do something like this and it meets all your requirements:
Sem 1
MTH1020
ATM1010
other science sequence (ie ASP1011 I am not plugging anything)
random arts unit

Sem 2
MTH1030
ATM1020
other science sequence (ie ASP1022 I am still not plugging, it is merely alphabetically first)
random arts (or other faculty even :P) unit

I hope some of this has made sense
