"Manly"?

This may be sweet nothing's-esque, so my apologies. But I constantly hear people use the word "manly" and I wonder what other people think manliness is.

Personally, I believe it's doing something pointlessly stupid at personal risk. E.g. bull riding. Thoughts anyone?

To be brave, not a coward, and able to protect and guard his family members. I think also to be strong & rightful leader-if you know what I mean, not just in a physical sense, but also emotionally, and all those other stuff..that's what I call a "man"
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Much of the laddish behaviour at Oxford Uni in the mid 80s was said to be predicated on the line from the Sloane Ranger Handbook (English equivalent of The Preppy Handbook) "Silly stunts prove you're the goods"
