Actuarial studeis and all that math...

Without coming off ignorant or uninformed, I can't help but wonder why is there so much mathematics involved in becoming an actuary?

I'm trying to decide if it is the pathway for me, the more I read about becoming an actuary the more doubts I have about majoring in it.

Also, what do actuaries do?
I mean is it a 9-5 office desk job or is there more variety?

Read this whole thread Actuarial studies :)

I was once considering to be an actuary, so that thread is very good info :)
