Eng/Comm Units Questions

Currently choosing my units for this year, so just want to make sure that I'm doing it right. Any help would really be appreciated as I have no way to contact Monash ATM.

1) For the first year, do we do 6 engineering units and 2 commerce units? Just confused because in the handbook it says this is compulsory, but the recommended course progression has 4 of each instead

2) Do the first year commerce subjects have to be related to our desired major? Do people recommend doing core subjects?

3) When would be the best time to overload the 2 extra units so that I can finish my course in 5 years rather than 5.5 as it shows on the course progression?
