commerce has 6 compulsory core units which are basically first year accounting, business statistics, management, marketing, business law and microeconomics

I would say management, marketing and business law require good english skills - management in particular since you'll have a 1500 word essay, 2500 word essay and an in-class test (which involves writing) for your assignments. Marketing also included a 1500 word assignment describing a new product you want to bring in the market.

I wouldn't worry too much by what I have said since management and marketing are the easiest first year units for commerce IMO but I would say an interest in writing essays would help

If you are a maths person definitely do NOT major in management. It is insanely boring and essentially all you do is write essays.

Definitely major in finance if you are maths-oriented, there are many mathematical finance units to pick from which you will definitely enjoy if your maths skills are good.

Apart from the crappy first year units that you have to do, if you major in finance you will not need to write a single essay, all you need is to be able to read english and interpret questions, the rest is all pretty mathsy and logical reasoning.

Not sure on the specifics but you will definitely be doing quite a bit of maths units in eng, so yes they will defs help with finance.

because in engineering i think management would help a lot. Does finance have anything to do with engineering type projects?

Well you said you were a mathsy person so finance would definitely suit your interests, I don't know much about engineering, but if you pick management major you will be writing essays your entire degree which is gonna be pretty boring esp if you are maths-inclined.

I know first year management is a total bore but apparently management gets better after first year (according to a friend) - either way you're going to be writing essays
