Toothy's chemistry questions

Any help appreciated. This is my worst subject by far.

Upon catalytic hydrogenation, 1-methylcyclopent-1-ene (shown below) will yield methylcyclopentane. How many other cycloalkenes will also yield methylcyclopentane on catalytic hydrogenation?

The answer is 3, but why (and how)?

1-methylcyclopent-1-ene

EDIT: DON'T WORRY I SEE IT LOL. Stupid question.

Okay I just answered myself. I'm an idiot. Move along nothing to see.
More questions when I have trouble.

How do I synthesise 3-methylbutanamine from 1-bromo-3-methylbutane?

There's more than one way isn't there? :<

Isn't it just a nucleophillic substitution with NH3?

Is there another way? The question had "devise syntheses" <-- plural lol, it's just putting me off.
There's also a list of reagents and common solvents "available in our laboratory for these syntheses" (stuff like potassium phthalimide, AIBN, Ugi's amine, Pearlman's catalyst and and and palladium tetrakistriphenylphosphosphine - NEVER SEEN BEFORE!) ... or should I just ignore it?

There are probably a lot of different ways, some less direct than others. But I think a direct nucleophilic substitution should do, seeing as we are just in first year. How many points is the question?

Ah, thanks. No points specified for this, which makes it more indirect. It's a Sn2 reaction right? Still trying to relearn semester one stuff ...

Oh and another thing that I never bothered to find out till now. When choosing a polar aprotic solvent for Sn2 reaction mechanisms how do we exactly pick one? I always pick DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) just because I know of its existence ... when is it good to pick acetone or some other stuff?

lol I'm kinda shocked that you haven't. I know the biomedders have; must be a health course thing to do it first. S:
Have you guys done coordination compounds with that ligands stuff and crystal field theory?

we might have...... I haven't started reading for semester 2 yet :P

I'm not sure about your chem, but CHM1011/1022 are really generic, they cover physical (reaction kinetics, etc), inorganic (atmospheric, etc) AND organic chem (organic pathways, etc), which may mean we cover stuff in less depth than your units, which I assume will be mainly organic?

We had a separate unit for organic and another one for the physical side (which, yeah was the kinetics, thermodynamics, phase equilibria stuff). ): Semester 2 is the merging of the two ... (and we do these with biological applications) .... *dies* I haven't even caught up to the first semester stuff yet. I'D TAKE GENERIC CHEMISTRY ANYDAY.

I feel like punching a wall because of crystal field theory. I can't even remember all the reactions for aldehyes and ketones.  /minirant

Hey toothpaste,

Did you study from textbook questions for this examination?

Nah, hardly touched my textbooks in first year. I should have, but didn't.

These were just workshop questions, online quizzes and tutorial questions I felt compelled to complete. Looking back at these posts makes it all quite funny. The level of difficulty in my later year units skyrocketed in comparison.
