My opinion is basically what I said in this thread; Powerful Laptop for Uni

What you want in a laptop that you're going to be taking to uni is the opposite of what you want in a laptop that will play the latest games. You should decide which is more important to you, since if you try and carry a 3.5kg laptop with a 15' screen that has a battery life of 90 minutes to all your lectures, you'll be miserable. I bought an ultrabook that weighed a third of that and lasts through a day of classes and I was extremely happy with it, despite only being able to play Peggle.

I recommended buying a desktop and a laptop or a tablet in that thread and I think it's a pretty good idea. If you want power for games you can build an $800 PC that handles most things on OK specs and then upgrade it with future cash to push it further, whilst still getting a $400 tablet to take notes in class with.

If you got money (and I mean it), look no further than the Falcon Northwest DRX. The specs speak for themselves.

Just curious, could anyone recommend me a laptop? I'm mostly going to use it for uni work next year and that's probably it. I'm not a gamer so that's out for me. My budget is pretty tight. Hopefully under 1K.
