hey guys, looking at melbourne science next year to do engineering (mechanical systems major) and im planning on taking the advanced maths courses if i can, as well as advanced physics as electives and a breadth track in either a language or in commerce, will any of these things require my CAS or can i give it to my sibling going into year 10? sorry if this should be in the melbourne board

I don't think it's needed at all. Engineering subjects require scientific calculators and maths exams generally prohibit calculators at all.

Nah you shouldn't need it. My boyfriend is in Mechanical Eng masters and he only ever uses a scientific Calc.

You're not allowed any calculators in all maths subjects I believe. For engineering, you're only allowed scientific calculators. We use MATLAB or other software for more complicated things - particularly in assignments. That's not to say don't hold onto it, it can definitely be handy when you're doing an assignment/homework and you need to check your working.

Do you know of any science/maths subjects that require it?

And you don't even need it for calculus 2?

Nope. Why would you need it for Calc 2 in particular? And no I believe no maths subjects use CAS.
